Thanks for this video! Back in the 70’s I went with a group of Special Education teachers on a tour of the then, “Agnew State Hospital.” We were “allowed” into the “restricted” child developmental center where they had a nursery. I will never forget what I saw. There were rows and rows of metal beds with infants who had horrific deformities, ranging from severe “hydrocephalus” to unrecognizable body parts. One child had a head so large his ears touched each side of the bed itself. I literally became so overwhelmed I had to leave the group and exit the hospital. I remember walking at a fast pace down the long corridors with moss green painted walls, hoping I wouldn’t get lost on my way out. My heart ached for those children knowing full well they would probably remain there for what short life they may have.

As a college student, I worked in the food service department at Agnew State Hospital in the 60's while it still housed mentally ill patients as well as developmentally challenged. It was not a place of horrors or cruelty as in "...Cuckoo's Nest" but was woefully understaffed. When Ronald Reagan was elected governor he cut the state funding which resulted in many mentally ill patients becoming homeless and/or incarcerated.
"1967 Ronald Reagan is elected governor of California. At this point, the number of patients in state hospitals had fallen to 22,000, and the Reagan administration uses the decline as a reason to make cuts to the Department of Mental Hygiene. They cut 2,600 jobs and 10 percent of the budget despite reports showing that hospitals were already below recommended staffing levels."
While campaigning in California, Reagan claimed to have sure-fire solutions to the state budget challenges but offered no specifics. After his election, he targeted the mentally ill and the education for cuts in spending. He used a similar budget slashing tool as president.
"1981 President Reagan repeals Carter’s legislation (expansion of Kennedy's Community Mental Health Act) with the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. This pushes the responsibility of mentally ill patients back to the states. The legislation creates block grants for the states, but federal spending on mental illness declines."

Thank you for the info! I know by the 60s most of the "horrors" of the old days were gone. Some of the stories from the original buildings were awful. My grandfather's dad actually had his first wife committed here back in the early 1900s, must have been rough.
We still need to do something about the mental health problem in this country!

A lot of homeless people live here, formerly including myself. The stories about this place are very true, and there's some you don't hear about unless you're part of the homeless community here. If you're planning to visit, here's some important tips.
    1. There's a hole in the fence, near the Oracle parking lot, behind some thick vegetation. Sometimes this gets closed again, so bring wire cutters.
    2. There's a patrol truck that goes around with a security guard. Avoid this obstacle by hiding in the vegetation, and waiting for the truck to go past and out of eyesight, then bolt for the door. You have ten minutes to get inside and out of sight.
    3. Stay away from the first floor, this is where the most dangerous of the homeless population inside lives (meth addicts, people with mental problems, etc. Usually armed, always dangerous. We call them "screamers". They basically run on the same logic as a horror movie zombie, but faster. Do not fight them, either hide before they see you, or run for your life. They are stronger than you).
    4. If you hear unearthly sounds in the dark, get away from the vicinity of them as quickly and quietly as possible. It's either a screamer, or The Doctor. Both of these will kill you.
    5. There are toilets on the second floor. They don't flush, but this is the acceptable room to do your business in if you must.
    6. Never go alone, it is far too dangerous for this.
    7. If you hear a small girl giggling, or jingling bells, you're safe. If they very suddenly stop, get away as quickly and quietly as possible or hide.
    8. If you're going to sleep here, bring enough salt to surround the perimeter of a former patient room, including the doorway, and sleep in the circle. Always barricade the door behind you, do not disturb the circle.
    9. Do NOT use alcohol or drugs during your stay, or go in under the influence. He will find you.
    10. Whatever you do, unless you absolutely cannot avoid it, DO. NOT. GO. IN. THE. CHAPEL.
    11. They can see you. They know where you are. Do not disturb them.
    12. If you see anything that looks physical, get away from it as quickly and quietly as possible.
    13. Stay away from the windows.
    14. If you stare into the mirrors for too long, you won't be alone for long.
    15. Do not take anything from the grounds, not even a pebble. Pictures only.
    16. Watch out for feral cats and goats on the grounds.

Hi I have a few questions from the numerous times I have visited with my group of friends and experienced some weird things, I wanted to confirm with you because some still lingers. For number 11, is "they" referring to the security guards or the folks who resided here, and did they reside in the main large building? My other question is, who exactly is "the doctor", was he also in the main building with the former chairs and what not (ive experienced good amounts of activity there)? For number 9, who exactly is "he"? My final question is, the little girl. My friends didn't hear it, one did and got creeped out as much as I; fortunately, it did not seem we disturbed her as her laugh didn't abruptly stop. Is there anything more you can help add to your experience and knowledge living there by answering these questions? I stopped going after a guard caught us hiding in there, threatened my buddy and I with a firearm, but did not see anyone in there. It was by far one of the most heavier energies there. Thank you, I really would appreciate this.

Hey man...I'm the guy who wrote to you about Bodie. You may recognize my name/logo. I didn't realize you had a lot of videos on your site and I have subscribed. I grew up in Santa Clara and a long time ago (around 1979) me and another guy were sent out to do some "glue up ceiling tiles" in some of the rooms/buildings there at Agnew State Hospital. Of course we were not working in the same buildings as any of the patients as they were put somewhere else so we could work. My co-worker and I got a good look at some of the patients outside the windows and in the yards. That was my first experience observing severe mentally disabled people. It was sad and puzzling and mind blowing that humans can be so mentally screwed up. And yet...what else can we do with people like that but put them in a hospital like this?

    • @vvarietyshow
      @vvarietyshow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

You hit the nail on the head, and to me mental health is a new frontier we need to explore. There has to be a way to have empathetic care for people and I hope we figure it out someday. Thanks for the stories. Interestingly my stepdad told me him and some friends used to go skateboard skiing behind a car through Agnews just to see their reactions. He said they would all yell and cheer as they skated behind the cars holding a rope. This would be around late 60s.

@@vvarietyshow It was interesting watching your video of Agnew State Hospital. The facility has a long history in itself. If only those walls could "talk." I'm sure there were many weird and bizarre things that happened there regarding treatment of the mentally ill. I worked there with a co-worker for about 5 weeks and saw these illnesses that these unfortunate people were cursed with. I was astounded that humans like you and me can be so "mentally screwed up" and how blessed we are to be "mentally healthy." What's really scary is we are still subjected with people who have "various degrees of mental ilness" that are not in a mental institution.

It was Agnews with an "s". I provided some Stress Management training to the medical staff there when the facility was for the Developmentally Disabled. The Medical staff was very dedicated, not understaffed but CA State had decided under the Lanterman Act to no longer provide a hospital residential care structure and all patients were going to be placed in community homes. The Staff was very worried that that kind of care would not provide enough medical supervision and care provision.

I am sooo JEALOUS!!! I fell intrigued with the Agnew facility the very first time i drove past it on my way to my new job over in Alviso. Every day, twice a day i drove past the facility and something about that place had me so intrigued that i became lightweight obsessed with it. Let me say... i'm from New Orleans so i had no idea that it used to be an Insane Asylum. Upon finding that out is when the obsession began. Not crazy obsessed! But it sparked a little google digging. I was extremely taken back by a couple coincidences. I'm from Louisiana... Lafayette, which is one of the streets Agnews is on is a major city in LA. Agnews was a Catholic run facility. LA is considered a Catholic state. Aight ya ready for this one!? The other street for which the facility was on is River Oaks. Just in case you don't know... River Oaks is the name of the looney bin that is right on the outskirt of New Orleans in River Ridge. After all that I was determined to go in there. I don't know what i thought i was going to see but i KNOW there was something to be seen there. The torcher, the mistreatment, the experimental procedures and drugs and quite frankly bc it was run by Catholics. I'm Catholic btw. I LOVE GOD and have mad respect for the church. But lets be real. Some Catholic organizations are responsible for doing and covering some crazy ish. Like CA-RAZY. Exorcist kinda shit. So i began trying to figure out how to go in. As mentioned.. there was security posted round the clock. ANd not like they ride around and you can sneak in kinda thing. Like they posted at the one point of entry/exit and there is a tall chain fence completely surrounding the grounds. So i drove up to the driveway to the entry. Was stopped by the security right away. I was choppin it up wit dude for a bit and told him. hey i'm hella curious about this place. Can i go look around? You can even come with me. I wasn't tryin to disturb or piss ANYTHING off that may have been present. I just felt VERY strongly that there were stories, or I don't even know!! I do know that i probably woulda shit my pants if i had ANY sort of encounter or experience there, which would have happened. the encounter, not shitting my pants! Back to security dude... He wasn't rude or mean at all but it wasn't going to happen. Being as inquisitive as i am i started asking questions. Like ... what kind of crazy shit goes on here. You're here all the time.. You are all up in the guts of that facility. you have to have seen or heard something here. He kindly shut me down and sent us on our way. TOTALLY IGNITED my curiosity even more. Like there is mad shit goin on in there..still. You could just sense it. it's hard to explain. SO my dumb ass thought fine! Lets follow the perimeter and there has to be a spot where we can jump the fence and get up in there. We did and there was. However, when it registered that my big ass ain't no fence jumper and that when i was faced with the inevitable fear i would encounter, i would be stuck like Chuck on the inside of the fence. I sadly decided not to go over that fence. So all i could do is just continue to drive by everyday and KNOW theres some CRAZY SHIT goin on in there. Months later i guess they began to clear out the buildings for demo. Got intrigued all over again. There were lots of trucks that were being filled up BUT WITH WHAT??? The place had been abandoned for BOOKU years already... What was being guarded so tightly? Places, that become abandoned like that, are looted, gutted and trashed. whatever is left isn't salvageable or just nasty. Not here. A LOT of somethings in there were valuable enough that someone pocketed the expense of many trucks and movers to remove what was in there before demo'ing everything.
And with that, my conspiracy is concluded.

Man this makes me sad. I lived on grounds K-8 grade years on the other campus(got called names), dad worked there more than 40 years, I worked 3 summers, helped take care of the residents, even had some home for Christmas at times that didn't have no family. Bought my first PC game before I had a computer and installed in on one at work, kept reinstalling it when the IT guys would remove it. There is a thorough if low budget doc about the history of the place made basically at the behest of the alumni, it's kinda hokey but interesting wish I could find it. It was never a perfect solution but the people who worked there cared and saved many people from a much worse fate.

My sister is profoundly delayed, nonverbal and non-ambulatory. She lived at Agnews for years. My family and I would drive out to visit her most weekends. I recognize all the buildings you were in. The nursing staff that worked there seemed to do a good job and were kind and supportive for the most part with a few bad apples. Most of the residents that lived there were really sweet souls but were developmentally delayed with medical and mental health issues. Agnews stopped housing the criminally insane people there many years back. Anyway now my sister lives in a medical group home in Campbell and is doing well. The small group care homes seem to work better as opposed to the mass housing of patients. Anyway thanks for posting this, cool to see what it looks like all abandoned now. And be careful if you go back as the buildings are so old, they are no longer structurally sound.

I stayed in one of the now demolished dorms off Lafayette street. It was for the homeless but it was originally for the craziest of the crazys, the rooms were round and believe me, that entire area is haunted. At night, you could see figures darting past the windows when there was no one there. When the developers tried to tear everything out they found the unmarked cemetery where they had to leave them. Right in the middle of a housing complex.
They said it was from the earthquake but hundreds of Nazi scientists were brought there under operation Paperclip and Im positive they put some experiments gone wrong in those plots. The wing we were in had swastikas embedded into the concrete steps.

I live very near Lafayette and Calle de Primavera and my sons preschool was onn Hope and Lafayette, next door to an apartment complex and old abandoned graveyard. When my son was younger and still attending that school, sometimes he would come home and tell me he see a new boy that wanted to be friends. Yet, everytime I would ask him to show me who this new person was, the boy was never around. The teachers had no idea who I was talking about. And at our place, sometimes when I am walking our dog, I could swear someone is walking directly behind me and of course no one is there. There is a small park down the street and from a distance, it sometimes looks like someone is watching me from behind a few particular trees. Or, we will get a knock on the door and no one is there. My son refuses to sleep with his bedroom door open because he says he feels like someone is watching him from the upstairs stairwell.
