Mani peninsula is very important. It is very rugged and home to very rugged people in prior centuries who fought continuously for freedom. It is the only part of Greece that never fell to foreign rule. Despite continuous attacks by Ottomans, Venetians, Franks, Egyptians, pirates, it never fell to foreign rule.
It is still rugged and full of castle-like structures and houses, which is due to that history where it was continuous fight with outsiders for freedom or supplies, or insiders for supplies, honor, or status , having the famous vendettas.
Maniots also moved to Corsica in big numbers where they made villages and moved their vendettas with them, leading to Corsican vendettas. Napoleon's dissertation in military school was on Maniots of Corsica, learning alot from them, and he was raised by partly by Greeks and Maniot Greeks, which had close relations with his family.
