Traditional engineers reduce water stress: Kattas of Kerala | Mongabay-India x ALT EFF

- Traditional knowledge, locally sourced raw materials and community efforts - the key ingredients farmers use to conserve water in some districts of Kerala and Karnataka.
They build 'kattas,' a temporary check dam which, like any other check dam, holds back flowing water in the stream or river and lets the excess flow. In the case of this traditional check dam, however, it is the community that funds and builds it.
Kattas conserves water for irrigation and also recharges groundwater, benefiting everyone nearby. It is a lifesaver during water shortages.

Have you heard of other traditional solutions to environmental issues? Tell us in the comments!
You still have time to change the title. Change it to Malabar coast or Kerala and Tulu Nadu or South India for political correctness dumbos
When you do you a "it's not only found in this area" schtick the second place you'll mention (in this case Udupi and coastal Karnataka) should be like far away from the primary place indicating that it is fascinating that two different places far away from each other still came up with a similar functional aspect. That's the purpose of that schtick. Not when both places you mention are literally next to each it becomes redundant. It's like saying "the delicious aloo Paratha is not only found in Punjab but also in two districts of Haryana"🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Just imagining the "Golden mean" by the government appointed engineer and the locals. That is, if the engineer listens, learns, and implements the knowledge acquired through generations by locals and the locals learn something new as well.
Mutual dialogue between both parties could be a "winner" here.
- Love and best wishes from Australia.
They are speaking my language Tulu, and Tulu is from Udupi and Mangalore in Karnataka.
Kasaragod too.
oh wow 😮,I used to think only kannada is spoken in Karnataka,is it similar to kannada,
I have even heard that people of this region is very beautiful
@@strikeclub4535 it's totally different language, older than Kannada (but some dispute). Although, since dominance of Kannada, therefore you can find a lot of borrowed words from Kannada.
Tulu speakers are divided by both Kannada and Malayalam speakers by respective linguistic states.
Tulu speakers are culturally more closer to Northern Kerala, you'll find similar type of demigod worship and castes.
If you want to learn a better Kannada, grammatically, polite and sound one, then you should go to Mangalore. The ones in Bangalore speak Kannada similar to how African Americans speak English. Still they wanna be cocky about it. But Mangaloreans are more polite and respectful.
@@strikeclub4535 the region known as Dakshin Kannada is simply spectacular. With clean beaches and mountain and rivers. Just check Maravanthe beach. It's ocean on one side then NH 66 and river on other side. More than adequate monsoon, lots of greenery. Focus on Education with great Education and higher education facility and simultaneously culturally rich with so many festivals and temples. Awsome food, dosas from Udupi...costal fishing and lots more....
@@y.u.so. oo thanks for such detailed information,I'm a maithili speaker, but learning kannada with youtube tutorial, found few words similar to Sanskrit or pure hindi 🙏

Sitting in Mangalore and watching this makes me proud as a Mangalore Guy. I love my land. I love Mangalore. 😊😊😊

Last word was very well said...
Glad to see that ground water is maintained by local farmers
Fantastic to see the community initiative building upon their traditional knowledge but at the same time sad to imagine what may happen in the future. Everywhere it is the same story🤕
Good work all team members.
This is common all across Kerala. Mostly it is referred to as thada-ana
Very well made informative piece about natural water conservation
diverting canals and interconnected lake and pond system is the way to go kasargod!
Thats y i got confused... Tulu in Kerala... Then in remembered its kasargood... Its a common feature in most parts of Karnataka
It's fairly common all over Kerala.
It's used also to direct water to paddy fields.
The more efficient way of doing it is making a concrete structure and then using steel gates for regulating flow during season and off season.
Don't need to dismantle and set up every year
Its also used to filter out salt in the water before opening to paddy field
Amazing work, if government is the people then the engineers and the authorities should consult the community, going to university shouldn't make one so arrogant or having power over others. Together I believe they can work magic
Brilliant!
Great Initiative Congratulations 🎉
Great nice traditional knowledge validated
They are traditional people of Kerala.
It's good, but some special individual expertise seems to be required. To be in nature's harmony is always the best.
Some details are required to be explained more, eg construction features and why such a construction increase water table and not regular one.
Would be great if u can give give Credits on who has worked on this project like videograpgher , voice over , etc ...
It is common in Karnataka also.
What the locals say is correct. The government should consult those working in the profession for ages and utilise their wisdom. It is not as though the community is against any sort of development. They are asking for development that is sustainable and effective. It is an eye opener that groundwater is being over-utilised and surface water is being under-utilised.
Long live traditional Kerala farm engineering!
Technocrats are trained to judge local populations as ignorant failures.
"Why else would these people would need our expertise and iPhones?"
If the come-from-away experts really want to suggest a useful addition to kattas...
What if they wanted to add beavers to the process?
Wait, don't scroll!
Think it through: beavers...
-start building dams at the sound of running water.
-work 24/7 til finished
-work undeterred by human observation.
-fell trees only when none are already felled
-use trees and traditional materials for building
-can be relocated to lodge in wetland preserve when katta is removed
The only potential drawbacks are diet and predators.
Over to you!
Its kannada and tulu language from karnataka... I think title has typo error
Kasaragod district, kerala
There are tulu speakers in Northern Kerala regions bordering Karnataka
Promote Kattas ,not go with permanent solution.because peremwant solution like Shutters will negatively affect local fishes and biodiversity. So promote kattas by giving financial support to local people s is the sustainable way.
Traditional engineers❤
It's not just Kerala it's Coastal Karnataka as well.
It's mentioned in the video
@@TheGeorgeous true but most people won't watch the whole video would they? Half baked information is dangerous!
@@nakulan420Yes half baked information is dangerous. That's why you should be criticizing those who don't watch the entire information. Not the reported who does all the work to give you full information
Interesting
Yes, they are from tulunadu
It's Kerala land. Mangalore 30 percent population keralites when Karnataka state formed
Instead of kattas we can build kolhapur types weir (KT weir) this weir is very popular in Maharashtra
👏👏👍
Vcd s can be successful (government built) but they are built unscientific , like wrong location😢
Brilliant

Is he speaking a
both kannada and Malayalam🤔
In Telugu also we call it "Katta"
Due to the imposition of Malayalam and Kannada, our Tulu language and culture are fading away. 😢
Don't these kattas disrupt the natural flow of the river and impede fish migration?
Its Kattas of Karnataka which is shown....not Kerala....
That's Kasaragod it's in Kerala. Just because they speak your language doesn't mean that the land is your 😂

Tulunadu is where ?
In Kerala and Karnataka right ?
No. They are from Kasaragod, Keralam.
There is something called border regions were people speak neighboring state's languages. Tulu in Northern Kerala and Tamil in other Kerala borders
singing a kannada song doesn't make anyone kannadiga😂😂😂
Why people are dividing by language. It’s to convey message. Nothing else.

Not required. English is the best bridge language
Kasaragod belongs to Karnataka unfairly made it to Kerala district
Tulunad is historically and culturally connected with Keralam. Not with Karnataka.
@@CJ-ud8nf 100%
Just because they speak some of your language doesn't mean that the land belongs to Karnataka. There are many malyalees in Mangalore similarly many Tamil speaking elsewhere in Karnataka does that mean that lands belong to Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Don't think small you already have a lot of ongoing disputes with Maharashtra,Tamil Nadu and Kerala don't come looking for trouble
@@jamesbluntjamesblun1 same applies to Kerala also, just becoz you are next to each other does not mean you can claim anything
So kanyakumari belongs to kerala
