I feel like I am the only one not feeling any romance between Nikki and Nerd, but rather a really deep kind of unexplainable friendship. Even though Birkhoff seemed like he loved her, I don't think he did in the way we believe it. I think he actually feels really grateful. When he was in Division he was just another person. Just another employee that could easily be replaced. When he saved Nikki and Michael, they took him in. For him it was as if he suddenly had a family, as if he was something more important than just an employee. Finally there was someone who would do anything for him, someone who cared about *him* and not only his skills. Beautiful friendship development aswell as character development!

So she had to get on the phone and call Michael to find out what to do Nikita had never been confused before she had always been the one in control but when she lost her man she was she was just in a terrible state she almost lost her f****** mind because broke off was her boy it's just that simple a woman can have a boyfriend a woman can have a lover or a husband but burkhoff was hers and hers only nobody else and she freaking lost it because while she was panicking and freaking out brick off being beaten damn near to death

It's more like.. they all care for each other so deeply and been through so much and Birkhoff just didn't know how else to express his (non-romantic) love for her in that moment, if this would have been "goodbye". If it would have been Ryan or Owen who've both "expressed that sort of interest" in Nikki it would have been a whole different story, I'm sure.
