If you lay the longer tomato plants out in your garden on their sides (still in the cup) a day or so ahead of time, the plant tip will naturally start to bend upwards. Then when you plant them in the trench, you don't have to bend the stem because the plant has already done it.
I swear you must have a camera around here! Every time I have an issue it seems you put up a video about it that same day! You are simply the best! Thank you so much Brian! You spend so much time showing us all of your master gardening skills, and I super duper appreciate it!! I truly have my first garden ever because of you!!👏👏🙏
Same here.... funky year thus far, indeed! I’m in 9a and just getting my tomatoes in the ground. Fortunately, I can grow tomatoes well into the fall season.
@@NextLevelGardening zone 4a here in south central Montana. We are slowly coming out of a cold snap since almost a week with 7 inches of snow. My rain barrels are all full and spare buckets the same. Toms are crying to be planted as are squash. May not be able to get going till around June 2 or 3 this year. Then we prepare for hail storms before end of the month. Crazy weather this year for sure. Cheers, all you lucky growers everywhere it's warm enough to plant. Bob
Hello from Sweden! My husband and I built our first raised garden (12 beds!) and we've learned so much from your tutorials and really enjoy watching your videos - your chicken coup is amazing! Something that would make your show even more enjoyable (and informative) is if you included the metric conversions for temp and measurements. I appreciate the bulk of your audience is in the US but your international audience would be ever so grateful 🙂
You are now the only gardening TH-camr I follow. Your advice has shown its value in that my tomatoes are already flowering and growing faster than I have ever seen them as a result of your planting and fertilizing tips. If I could post a week over week change these past 3 weeks you too would be amazed! Many thanks. My wife and I are looking forward to a bumper crop this year.
I did my own starts this year. Last year was a flop. I'm more determined to grow this year. Haven't planted my tomatoes yet. I have some indeterminate tomatoes to put in. So I can't wait to see your video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I truly appreciate all of your efforts.
Just getting my tomatoes in here in Illinois. First, we had frost, then near ninety. I also have a new drip watering system that I'm excited to experience. My tomatoes are waiting impatiently in their red solo cups!

Just now planting mine in zone 8 Alabama. Although many gardeners here have had them in the ground for weeks, we had morning temps in the 40s last week. This week temps in the mid-90s.i think summer is here to stay. No more cold soil.
One important thing for every gardener is I think to collect seeds from all kinds of vegetables since some countries bann selling seeds from old type of vegetables that people grew for centuries that don't give enough fruits. Long time ago most people shared their seeds with their neighbours for free while most people now are dependent on industry with limited type of vegetables where you cannot find older types.
I never thought about doing them in a trench! What a great idea!! Thanks for the tips. I was just about to plant a tall "Big Zac" and our beds aren't that deep. Perfect timing to find this video (even though you did it a year ago). Thanks again! Love both of your channels. You rock!
Brian, I am in Zone 7b and I just planted some tomatoes two weeks ago, some two days ago, and still have some to be planted. The ones I planted in 5 gallon buckets I tried one of your techniques. I filled the buckets 2/3rds of the way up and planted my tomatoes. Now that they have grown over the top of the bucket I will take off leaves, add more soil, and put on my homemade cages. So far so good.
Zone 4....frost tonight. I have 3 sungold cherry toms in growbags, they can sleep in the sunroom tonight. I won't put the Lemon Boys or Big Beef toms in the ground until ~ June 10. I had to plant out 3 tomatillos in one of the raised beds last week because I needed the space indoors to start my squash and mini melons. I'll double layer frost blanket them and hope for the best. I have 6 more as backups. Gardening up here is like drag racing. We're all at the starting line, revving and raring to go......but we have to be patient and wait for the green. Too many false starts and we're frozen toast.....when we finally get the GO we run through the gears like MAD! Then, in a blink of an eye, the season/race is over. It's the end of August and the frost warnings have returned.
I'm so excited for the trellis video. Mine have come back so well for the most part they are ready for trellising for sure. Now, if the rain would just stop I could show the garden. 🤣
@@NextLevelGardening - Awe! Thank you! I was so sad. Not all of them are back, but the ones that aren't are still trying and I've only had to pull one that was in a tub. As soon as I can I'll do an update. Just can't get away from the rain long enough. Ugh
My volunteer tomatoes are just starting to sprout here in 6a. Bought some 4" plants today because I never got around to starting any myself. Been a crazy weird busy spring, but so happy that life is getting back to normal. ☀️🌈☀️
Why not dig a sloped trench (deeper on one end) and put the root ball in the deep end? That way you get the advantage of depth for consistent moisture and less need for bending at the top.
Thank you for such helpful instructions for planting 🍅 I can't wait to plant my tomato plants! I even found the rock phosphate at a local garden center🙂

Thanks, Brian for all the great information. Now i know why i only harvest 3 to 4 tomatoes from every plant. I have only used plain pot soil and nothing else.
I had a feeling you were going to trench the large tomato plant! I saw Ray from Praxxis 55712 do something similar. He pruned his tomato plant from the top to encourage side growth while still in the pot. Once it put out side growth, he planted it in the middle of his garden and spread the 4 branches out in trenches, and ended up with 4 plants! Tomatoes are amazing! :D
Thank you Brian, very useful information 💚🙃 I did know about planting as much of the stem as your able to, but learning about the nutrients you use is valuable information, Thank you again💚🙃
Hey Brian, I have a request for you. You are a favorite of mine, and I’m sure 1000’s of others, so will you reiterate the importance of NOT over fertilizing. I watch roots & refuge too, and they don’t fertilize much at all, with the exception of adding compost every spring. I have never used much either, but this year I added a little blood meal, a little dry fertilizer, a little of this and a little of that, and mixed it in my potting soil, and finally planted my 2’ tall tomatoes. Whew, after 3 days they are all starting to wilt from the bottom up. Is there any quick fix? I’ve been gardening for 40 years. My bad 😪

Hey buddy! I sowed all my tomatoes this year from seed (for the first time) in February and I have just finished planting them all out. I use your first method when I have a deep enough situation but if I have a shallow situation (i.e. a shallow pot) then I use your second method. I don't add any amendments beyond blood and bone and Seasol (which is a seaweed concentrate that I regularly water in twice a month). Cheers!
OMG! We have struggled for years to grow anything, our dirt is so awful. We mostly gave up. But after watching a few of your videos, we now have 4 cucumber plants in 2 small raised beds, tomatoes in large pots, potatoes in Lowe's buckets, rosemary, basil, lettuce, cilantro, parsley, oregano and chives! My husband is even giving cantelope and corn a container try! We have had problems with germinating cherry tomato seeds. We tried SunGold and Tidy Treats...... no luck. We are having the most luck with Kellogg's Breakfast (thank you for the recommendation!) and Galahad. Could use a little help with our orange trees. Our lemon tree is a real trooper, but we planted 2 orange trees next to the lemon about 6 years ago (a Valencia and a Cara-Cara from Green Acres and they were pricey!) and they have sure been slow to grow and develop. This year one of the orange trees actually flowered, but all the flowers fell off and we have no fruit developing. I put hundreds of worms in the ground about 10 years ago, hoping they'd improve the soil over time, and of course we do fertilize everybody a couple of times a year.
A question...and a thanks Thanks this answered questions I had from other videos. Like is rock phosphate an alternative to lobster...and leave lower stems or remove. And the 40% 40% 20% mix is useful too (I plan to also use gypsum and Epsom salts in the containers with the potting mix )..Yeah this was raised bed video but....,.., .BUT I now am assuming one needs to leave at least three inches in bottom of a container below root ball. Is that adequate? I too have long tomato plants to get into my pots. Could try trench there if I had to in my 10 gal pots ...but that is kind of “out there”
Hi Brian, love all your videos. Thank you for all the tips. Question for you: I started my tomatoes early this year (end of Feb.) I’m in central CO. Last frost date is about May 13th. I always use the rock phosphate, crab&lobster she’ll and kelp when transferring to the garden. Since they have gotten so big and I’ve already up-potted them, should I use any other fertilizer besides liquid fish feet every two weeks until they are ready to go outside? Thank you for your time. Robert
What about Neptune’s Harvest “Tomato & Veg” formula? Could that be used instead of the rock phosphate, crab and lob shell, kelp meal blend? In addition to?
Brian, in a previous post I told you I have some tomatoes in a raised bed and in 5 gallon buckets. I added some Jobes Tomato & Veg fertilizer underneath before planting. How will I know when they need more fertilizer and how do I add it. I don’t want to use the liquid fish emulsion because there is a feral cat living near by, at least I think it feral.
I waited too long to transplant out my tomatoes this year and I only grow in containere because apartment patio life, so I buried them kinda hybrid of both. I dug deep and wide and planted them in like a diagonal L or crescent to get as much stem buried as possible. 😅
Yup, yer late for planting mators in CA. I'm beginning to get some ripe ones now. Both Betterboy and my favorite, Celebrity. I have some Silentz seeds on order to try.
Thank you! I`m a "cold" small grower. We have strong wind, 3- 12 celcius.... Even for Denmark it´s bad. A Cold, wet spring is what we got this year :/ I put my tomatoes in pots- chasing the sun- hoping for varmer weather Soon :) Ty for tips ;p
On Neptune harvest Fertilizer site. They recommended rose and flowering formula to feed tomatoes to help with flowering. Use Neptune harvest tom and Veg for rest of time. Do u do this or is it necessary? You mention to pinch of first flowers so next set will grown stronger. Does this work instead?
I tend to plant my leggy maters trench-style (my planter boxes are not deep). I lay mine on the ground, sideways, a couple of days before planting so the tops are already bent upward (kind of like your shorter/deeper plant). I find that this makes planting a lot easier.
I grow tomatoes and peppers in a polytunnel. Over winter, my chickens live in the tunnel, so by spring, the ground is loaded with chicken manure. I dig it in and then plant. Do you think it's necessary to also feed the plants?
I am very new to gardening so was very excited when I stumbled across your channel. Right now I only have 4 Serrano pepper plants and one tomato plant, all in pots. Two of my Serrano plants have sad looking leaves. They aren’t yellow but are blotchy looking. I didn’t follow your instructions about potting them because I actually did that before finding your channel. I’ve watched so many of your videos now but still have a few questions. First though, I would like to express my gratitude on the time and attention you put into making these videos, they are informative and very well done. My questions are 1) can I remove those leaves that look diseased? 2) How often should I feed? I’ve seen some people suggest every week or two and some have said four to six weeks. 3) Can I fertilize after planting? If so, how often should I fertilize? I live in central Texas which has a fairly long growing season and is pretty humid most of the time. We’ve had some pretty good rains so I’ve tried to keep the plants under the patio cover so they don’t get drenched. Not sure if my moving them around has caused trauma to the plants or not. I appreciate your advice or any advice from other channel followers.
First of all... thank you and welcome! 1. You can always remove leavescas long as they are the lower 1/3. Never from the top or more than 1/3 at a time. 2. I fert every two weeks. 3. I usually wait about a week after planting.
I have tomatoes in cups ready to be transplanted to garden and there are flowers buds on both determinate and indeterminate. Should I remove the flowers and if yes how should I remove them? Should I clip whole bud from main stem or just pinch off the flowers? Plants are less than a foot tall. This will be year three using your program with Rock Phosphate, Crab and Lobster, Kelp, aspirin and Tomato Veg fertilizer. Some indeterminate plants last year were over 15 ft. Thanks for an awesome program!!!!
I only snip them if they’re close to opening. If they’re still tiny buds I leave them on because they’re not going to be big enough to open for weeks anyway, and thus not really competing with the root growth needed post-transplant.
@@melissasullivan1658 Hi Melissa, thanks for your reply. the flowers are fully open on some of the plants. I'm not sure if I should just clip the flower or clip the the whole thing at the stem.
Melissa, I found this. I guess for indeterminate plants before putting in ground it's ok to remove flowers. Not sure about determinate. It says not to remove flowers from determinate plants but not sure if that means after it's been planted in the ground. growingtomatoes.website/2020/01/20/should-you-pick-the-flowers-off-of-your-tomato-plants/
On vacation later this year I should be able to collect crab shells right off the beach. What do you think about using those crushed up? Any concerns about possible contaminants?
Great information. An even better idea is to use a container like where powder coffee creamer comes in and mix your fertilizer in it. You can then use it as a salt shaker to place the fertilizers in the holes. It’s sooo much easier and convenient. I got that idea from the TNOG. I absolutely love it.
Here's a question: what if I just found this video and my tomatoes are already planted? Do you advise adding those fertilizers to plants that have been growing for a few weeks? Thanks!
Can you recommend several types of mulch? I've never mulched my plants and want to give it a try to see if it helps my tomato, eggplant, and pepper plants during the summer heat. I have some dead leaves and oak tree bark in our yard that I'm thinking of using. I can buy straw or hay at the feed store but know if it's been treated with pesticides or has grass seeds. Thanks for the video!
I never have either & this year I decided after watching alot of videos to use coco coir. Lowes or Amazon sells it. You can mix in container soil also.
@@angelaraum1545 I knew that you could use coco coir for making your own soil but didn't know you could use it as mulch. I might give it a try and if I have any left over, I can use it to start making my own potting soil. The organic HD soil gets rather costly when you need to use a lot of it. Thanks for the suggestion! Have a great day!
@@melissasullivan1658 Thanks for the suggestion. I need something to help my tomatoes from overheating so they'll set fruit. I'll check it out. Have a great day!

Same, in Sacramento. I’m using shade cloth to keep them them from dropping flowers, as going without last year basically had me wasting all my energy just keeping them alive...for, like, 3 tomatoes.

Great video can’t wait for next weeks! ☘️☘️☘️☘️🍅🍅🍅🍅
Thank you 😊
I use oyster shell powder & Dr. Earth bud & bloom booster. Biochar with michoriza, Hum-Max Plus, wormcastings, seaweed extract, Marphyl phytoplankton soil enhancer, LAB (KNF)
A question...and a thanks
Thanks this answered questions I had from other videos. Like is rock phosphate an alternative to lobster...and leave lower stems or remove. And the 40% 40% 20% mix is useful too
(I plan to also use gypsum and Epsom salts in the containers with the potting mix )..Yeah this was raised bed video but....,..,
.BUT I now am assuming one needs to leave at least three inches in bottom of a container below root ball. Is that adequate? I too have long tomato plants to get into my pots. Could try trench there if I had to in my 10 gal pots ...but that is kind of “out there”
Prune the bottoms. Yes!
In addition to?
when you mention 2-2-1 part are you using a cup to measure this i just order this and looking forward to using this
Brian, in a previous post I told you I have some tomatoes in a raised bed and in 5 gallon buckets. I added some Jobes Tomato & Veg fertilizer underneath before planting. How will I know when they need more fertilizer and how do I add it. I don’t want to use the liquid fish emulsion because there is a feral cat living near by, at least I think it feral.
Great video
I waited too long to transplant out my tomatoes this year and I only grow in containere because apartment patio life, so I buried them kinda hybrid of both. I dug deep and wide and planted them in like a diagonal L or crescent to get as much stem buried as possible. 😅
Great information Brian. Thanks.🍅
Love your videos Brian
Yup, yer late for planting mators in CA. I'm beginning to get some ripe ones now. Both Betterboy and my favorite, Celebrity. I have some Silentz seeds on order to try.
Thank you! I`m a "cold" small grower. We have strong wind, 3- 12 celcius.... Even for Denmark it´s bad. A Cold, wet spring is what we got this year :/ I put my tomatoes in pots- chasing the sun- hoping for varmer weather Soon :) Ty for tips ;p
Exact same thing we me...just got mine out!
Brian, are you still recommending the 3 fertilizers in the hole you used in this video, or are you switching to a different blend?
I tend to plant my leggy maters trench-style (my planter boxes are not deep). I lay mine on the ground, sideways, a couple of days before planting so the tops are already bent upward (kind of like your shorter/deeper plant). I find that this makes planting a lot easier.
GREAT TIP!
I grow tomatoes and peppers in a polytunnel. Over winter, my chickens live in the tunnel, so by spring, the ground is loaded with chicken manure. I dig it in and then plant. Do you think it's necessary to also feed the plants?
For sure your soil should have plenty of nitrogen, but I would think you would need to feed your plants the other major nutrients and trace nutrients.
@@NextLevelGardening how often do you feed or is food/fertilizer pretty much the same thing?
Can you apply this combination for other vegetables or is it just for tomato plants
Can the crab and lobster and/or kelp meal be used as top dressing a few weeks after planting with it?
On vacation later this year I should be able to collect crab shells right off the beach. What do you think about using those crushed up? Any concerns about possible contaminants?
Thanks for the information on phosphates!
Question, at what size do you allow your tomato plant to start bearing fruit?
Great information. An even better idea is to use a container like where powder coffee creamer comes in and mix your fertilizer in it. You can then use it as a salt shaker to place the fertilizers in the holes. It’s sooo much easier and convenient. I got that idea from the TNOG. I absolutely love it.
I am behind some, besides Alaskan/Polar Vortex, seed shortage and weird weather and sun this year plus a 90 degree day. My tomatos seem stunted a bit.
Do you pinch the first flowers? It's supposed to encourage root growth and bigger harvests in the long run.
Tks for sharing this information with us
Here's a question: what if I just found this video and my tomatoes are already planted?
It definitely helps keep soil moist. I use about 2-3 inches of EZ Straw (Amazon, $20 maybe?). It makes a world of difference!
@@melissasullivan1658 Thanks for the suggestion. I need something to help my tomatoes from overheating so they'll set fruit. I'll check it out. Have a great day!
Yes it does. I do container gardening only. I believe they make some type of cover to help with heat
1st. ... when I watch your videos I pray for u ever time while watching, praying for u & your family things r going well & will continue that way.
2nd...excellent information u deliver, simple to understand, pleasant to listen to u.
3rd...I invested in “Sea 90” last year & have noticed wonderful changes in my garden, 1 time I will water each plant individually, the next
Week I put it in a sprayer & spray... under... above...All around the leaves & stems of the plant, WOW. The changes I have noticed in my plants
Is so impressive, more production & flavor...R u familiar with Sea 90 ? All the nutrients from the sea...1 tsp. to a gallon of water. 🥰

It is blazing here in Southwest Florida, some of my tomatoes are about done from the heat.
Same, in Sacramento. I’m using shade cloth to keep them them from dropping flowers, as going without last year basically had me wasting all my energy just keeping them alive...for, like, 3 tomatoes.
