Henry Martin
(traditional [Child 167], arrang. J. Ferguson, 2019)
V1.
Dm C Dm
There were three brothers in merry Scotland.
F C Dm
In merry Scotland there were three,
Dm
and they did cast lots which of them should go,
C Dm
should go, should go
Dm F C Dm
and turn robber all on the salt sea.
V2.
The lot it fell first upon Henry Martin,
the youngest of all the three,
that he should turn robber all on the salt sea, etc.
for to maintain his two brothers and he.
V3.
He had not been sailing but a long winter's night
and part of a short winter's day
before he espied a stout lofty ship, etc.
come a-bearin' down on him straightway.
V4.
“Hullo, hullo!,” cried Henry Martin.
“What makes you sail so nigh?
I'm a rich merchant ship bound for fair London town, etc.
Will you please for to let me pass by?”
V5.
“Oh no, oh no!,” cried Henry Martin.
“That's a thing that can never be,
for I have turned robber all on the salt sea, etc.
for to maintain my two brothers and me.
V6.
“Come lower your topsail and brail up your mizzen
and bring your ship under my lee,
or I will give you a full flowing ball, etc.
and your dear bodies drown in the salt sea.”
V7.
“Oh no, we won't lower our lofty topsail,
nor bow ourselves under your lee.
And you shan't take from us our rich merchant goods, etc.
nor turn our bold guns to the sea.”
V8.
Then broadside and broadside and at it they went
for fully two hours or three,
till Henry Martin gave to her the death shot, etc.
and straight to the bottom went she.
V9.
Bad news, bad news to old England came,
bad news to fair London town:
there's been a rich vessel and she's cast away, etc.
and all of the merry men drowned.
Fantástica me encanta tu voz
This gives me goosebumps! I discovered the song through alestorm a short while ago, immediately fell in love with it. Your version is sung so beautifully!
Thanks Jesse! Keep up the hard work. Great vocals as always. Never get tired of your voice😀👊🎸🎵
Greetings from Dubai, I love listening to your songs every morning 😊🌹🌹🌹 thank you for the good songs you are amazing
Me hiciste emocionar, muy bella tu interpretacion
Gracias!
Man I love your voice and appreciate your love for folk music. It definitely inspires me.
Your vocals have force and power behind them, yet they are still true to the acoustic ballad style of the song's origin. And your guitar chords carry the melody without drowning it out. I have yet to find any other version with the same force but also the same modest guitar. Everywhere else I go I need to choose one or the other. The Assassin's Creed version suffices, but I can rarely enjoy it since the singer seems to be flat by only a hair. But this is amazing! I could actually honestly weep from how much I want a fully mixed and HD version of this cover. Mad props to you!
Thanks so much, Amy. I have a fully mastered version on my upcoming CD, which will launch around Christmas.
I'm most pleased to find that someone else appreciates this song. I heard it years ago, and nobody I know seems to have heard it.
@Labyrinth Spirtuality I first heard this song 30 years ago. Know two versions, one from Donovan and one from Joan Baez. The one from Joan I often listen to.
@Jesse Ferguson I love your version of this wonderful song. Greatings from Germany.
Love your version my father shared with me Joan Biaz at the age of 6 this was on one of her albums
Never heard this. Love the minor sound. Gonna need to relisten to grasp the lyrics. Love your stuff - thanks again, and all the best from Yorktown.
Folk song with rock taste!!
omg, I love this song! Learned it as child.
Thanks for uploading this good voice!
Good song there jesse and I'm glad you've put the lyrics and chords up thanks
I love it Jesse! I can just imagine a group of seafaring men singing this song. You made me feel the song. Good job my friend!
I like the way the tune of this lilting song is like a ship bobbing up and down in choppy waters, perfect for the theme of the song.....
I would love to hear your take on Sir Patrick Spens. ❤ Lovely as always.
Hi Meg, I have that one up already. Thanks for watching.
@@BardofCornwall, I see it now. Thank you!
