How do I decide how far apart I want the buttons ? I’m making a double bed headboard 4ft tall
The verticle is always larger than the horizontal measurement. Average size is probably 8" x 6" diamond. Don't let your buttons finish closer than 2" from the edge. Hope this helps ⛏️ 🧵 📎 📐 ✂️ 👍

I really want to try to reupholster an old tufted red velvet headboard we’ve got lying around but would I have to buy that whole buttoning machine? The stuffing is fine but I just want it in a different colour.
Some DIYers make their buttons with glue - although it can get a bit messy! Alternately, you could always ask your local upholsterer to make you some up...they probably wouldn’t charge you much at all. Let me know how you get on with your headboard, good luck 😁👍🏻

Great video!! Quick question. You used a 32mm drill bit. How big are your buttons? Can l use a 21mm drill bit for 23mm buttons?
Hi Victoria! Thank you for watching! My buttons were 19mm. Usually I like to drill the hole slightly bigger than the buttons so they drop down nicely. But there’s no rules to say you have to! Give it a go with the sizes you have and see what you think 😊👍🏻

Some upholsterers I know use a slightly tighter ratio of buttons to drill bit so it’s completely up to you with what athletic you like the look of and what’s easiest for you. Good luck with your project 😊👍🏻
Hi, I want to reupholster my headboard in chesterfield style. I have a leather bed and want to know the easist way of doing the project. I thought use a foam for the new headboard and spray adhesive it to the existing headboard, would that work? I thought if I use a light mdf board it may be too heavy to attach to the exisiting headboard. I want minimal damage to the bed as possible so I can revert back to leather if I choose at a later date. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,
Hi Sara! I wouldn’t recommend trying to put a new headboard on top of the old headboard as it may not be strong enough. I would suggest taking the old fabric and foam off and applying new foam to the original wood if you want to reupholster it or you can make a new headboard using 12mm or 18mm mdf depending on how heavy you want it to be. @@faceliftinteriors thanks for the tip. Unfortunatly it is a leather bed so didn't want to start taking that apart in case I wanted to revert back later. I may just have to cover the existing headboard with material rather than go for a chesterfield style. Thanks
Thanks again mate for another cool video. What size staples do you use? Does staple size make a significant difference? I bought an electric staple gun that came with some staples.
Thanks mate for watching and for the comment 😊🙏🏻 I usually use 8mm staples when upholstering or 6mm if I know I’ll need to remove the staples as they’re easier to remove. The size of the staples doesn’t make a significant difference to the finished look but longer staples are a nightmare to get out if you make a mistake. 8mm I found the best to use 😊 hope that’s helpful!
Bro dont you think drawing the buttons on the fabric is a waste of time? I usually lay the fabric on top and where a button needs putting in just pierce through it
Hmm if you are experienced then no it's not 100% necessary. I can deep button free hand but If you come off line you end up in trouble. I know very experienced upholsterers who still just draw the lines to follow. 🙏☺️✂️📐⛏️🧵📎
What's the best way to work the difference between the original diamonds to the diamonds on the fabric
Hi David! So with the diamonds on the foam you measure them how you want the diamonds to finish - then the diamonds on the fabric you have to make an allowance for the drop into the foam and the stretch of the fabric. Some fabrics stretch more one way than the other so you would have to test out your fabric and allow for that. So I tend to do about an extra inch or an inch and a quarter allowance on each diamond depending on the stretch of the fabric.
How do you reupholster a headboard that already has tufting? (It’s a leather board and has got scratched and scuffed.) Thanks!
Hi Ameesha! Sorry for the delayed reply. Remove the fabric and if the foam is still decent then you can reuse the foam with the holes already drilled for you to copy the tufting design in new fabric 👍🏻

Thanks a lot mate! It’s a Bosch GSG 300 and got mine from HoweTools but you can get them from a few different places online 😊👍🏻

iain spinks yea it’s normally about £400 for the machine and then you have to pay for the blades and the guide separately...so normally totals about £600. But definitely worth the money if you’re going to be cutting foam often!

Does the quilt batting resist the button from going up to the bottom?
Hi Franzeska, good question! I make holes in the batting first before I put the fabric on and start buttoning. So it doesn’t resist the button from going to the bottom. The batting is quite thin anyway so wouldn’t resist much but I make holes in it to make life easier 👍🏻 it just gives upholstery a nice luxurious finish. Hi Alisha! This fabric was by Linwood Fabrics called ‘Pronto’. It’s a linen style fabric for upholstery. Hope that helps 😊👍🏻

😂🤣 SO CUTE!!! you yelled at "America" for calling it batting 😂🤣. Well, I'm very sorry to say that "batting" (Dacron or Wadding to the Brits) is actually an AMERICAN invention. If you invent it, you get to name it. American colonists called it "batting" because, after picked cotton was dried by a fire, it was hand carded (rubbed) into little wooden blocks called "batts" ... the squares of cotton that came off the batts, were called BATTING. In the 1700s, after the invention of the cotton engine, and then cotton gin, American colonies started shipping processed "batting" directly to England.
