What does it mean that Jesus was a High Priest?

One of the gifts the wise men brought Jesus, according to Matthew, was a gift of frankincense. This gift symbolized Jesus as the great High Priest. In the old covenant, under Hebraic Law, the high priests would make atonement for the people's sins. He acted as a mediator between God and man. Sin is serious and the consequences it has on our life should be seriously considered. Thankfully Jesus took sin seriously and made a serious change by offering the ultimate sacrifice as our great High Priest.
