    Thanks for your help on the M20 spacers. Now, I tried to install the counter shaft but, it will only go about 1/4" into the first set of rollers. I'm using the original shaft, rollers and counter gear. This is with the gear out of the case, even. I was all ready for it to slide down but, nooo! This is at least the 8th Muncie I've assembled over the years and the first one that this has happened. What am I doing wrong?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if its all the original parts that you disassembled then it should go back together. The only thing is how did you remove the shaft? Did it come out easy? Correct end? Measure the diameter make sure it wasn't damaged on removal

    What gear lube do you recommend for a muncie ? GL4, GL5, Synthetic ? I've always used GL4 with good results, I understand GL5 has addatives that are corrosive to yellow metal and I've been told the synchros wont work properly with synthetic. Whatever you say I'll accept as the gospel truth.

    This is an awesome series; I got confused because in prev. segment you were using #800 paper to break the glaze on the synchronizer hubs; here, you are lubing the tapered drive gear hubs; if this whole mechanism acts as a cone clutch, why are the gear hubs lubed up? Sorry for my ignorant question.

    What keeps the input shaft/bearing from wanting to walk forward? Does the bearing nut act as a thrust washer against the bearing retainer that bolts on?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think it thru. There us a front bearing retainer that goes on in front of the bearing holding it in place. This is a common question which often times confuses people because they look at the one part and forget how the other parts of the assembly keep it in place. Its like leaving a gasoline cap off then wondering what keeps the gas from coming out of the tank! When you are learning about assembling things I use to tell some of my apprentices to "think things thru" .

    Hi Paul, Rob and Kevin here. The 1970's muncie that we are rebuilding now,,, the counter gear that we are trying to install has a very very thin gear on the one end of the counter gear. It is slightly rotational. We only remember there being one thrust washer on the one end of the counter gear when we disassembled it. Is that possible? Because we can't get the counter gear installed with a new thrust washer on both ends of the case. Any suggestions? Your expertise is appreciated.
