Alttrauchburg Castle, built in the 13th century, is one of the best preserved castle ruins in the Allgäu. Legends of a pagan woman and the constraining lords entwine around it. How much truth is there behind the tales?
The thrilling history of the Alt-Trauchburg is told in 4 minutes.

Alt-Trauchburg Castle is one of the best preserved castle ruins in the Allgäu. It is also known as Trauchburg and is located high above Kleinweiler in the Upper Allgäu.
A legend says that the castle was once built by a pagan woman. But is there any proof of this?
In 1041, a document mentions for the first time a castle that stood on the Trauchberg. However, this is not the present-day Alt-Trauchburg, but a predecessor building. This was built by the counts of Veringen and Nellenburg. This castle probably stood in a different place, but nearby.
The present castle site was not settled until the 13th century. Berthold von Trauchburg is given as the builder. There is no mention of a pagan in the written sources.
Berthold probably built a residential tower. In 1224 he acted as procurator of Swabia under Emperor Frederick II. In 1258 the fief passed to the Truchsesses of Waldburg. They extended the residential tower and also had a spacious outer castle with a strong square tower built.
Most of the time, the Waldburgs lived in the castle themselves, but at times they also had it administered by bailiffs. This was the case, for example, in 1418. In this year a bailiff named Hans von Mühlegg was mentioned. In 1429, Alt-Trauchburg Castle came into the possession of the Jacobian line of the House of Waldburg. These were often called "evil stewards" and were constantly in financial difficulties.
Were they the constraining lords appearing in another legend, who caused hardship to their subjects with ever increasing tax demands?
In the legend the peasants rose up against the unpopular rulers and let the castle go up in flames.
And indeed, it is documented that the castle was damaged and plundered during the Peasants' War in 1525. However, it remained in the possession of the Waldburgs.
A good 20 years later, the Schmalkandian League occupied the complex. After this event, Alt-Trauchburg was further fortified. A fortification was built around the core castle, which was strengthened by artillery doels. The outer castle was also better secured. Two stair towers were built in the main castle and numerous other changes were made. All this made the castle a representative center of power.
In 1628, the Waldburgs acquired the title of imperial count and moved their seat to Kisslegg Castle in 1690. Alt-Trauchburg Castle has been abandoned since then and served in the meantime as a quarry for other buildings of the Waldburgs.
