- Films are bound to multiple interpretations. Here, Director Jerrold Tarog sheds some light on the duality of artistic license and censorship. He explains how works of filmmakers or "storytellers" could be affected by public opinion, either by audience interpretation or the law. Jerrold Tarog is a Filipino filmmaker with awards and nominations in various disciplines of the filmmaking craft. His first feature film, CONFESSIONAL (2007), which he directed, wrote, scored, edited, and mixed won 8 awards, including Best Film, at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival and Best Film (FIrst Features Category) at the 10th Osian's Cinefan in New Delhi, India. It has also garnered acclaim from international critics and audiences.
He has worked in different genres, from horror to mockumentaries to youth films to drama. His 2013 love story SANA DATI (IF ONLY) won 8 awards, including Best Film and Best Director, at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, and has represented the country in various international film festivals, including Busan International Film Festival. His 2015 historical epic HENERAL LUNA has become one of the highest-grossing historical films in the history of Philippine cinema. Later this year he will release its sequel: GOYO ANG BATANG HENERAL. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
"In a free society such as ours, you don't police women's clothing; you don't police art."
He's the best. Couldn't ask for a better speaker at a Ted Talk! Thank youuuuu!
General Luna was just a hot-head. Now he could have been much nicer to his men (probably saved him from getting him murdered by the same people he bullied during his leadership) but his heart has always been sincere about freeing his fellow Filipinos from colonial powers. He's a general who even tried to resign from his post because soldiers no longer want to follow him so he's not a strong man. I wouldn't think a strong man will try to resign and settle a peaceful life. He's an imperfect hero.
we released a shortfilm that was written by me and everyone had their own opinions--mostly severe criticism--even my groupmates are saying the story was bad and looked like it wasn't finished. At first I thought was I a bad writer for not satisfying them but now I realize that it isn't my fault. Thank you for the talk direk Jerrold! U really inspire me!!
Thank you po. 💙
I became a film junkie and started seeing depth in films (specially if it's his work) because of him. he's my favorite director and it kinda occurred to me to aspire being a film maker in the future ahHHhHHH i love Direk Jerrold.
Agreed
Thanks sir jerrold
good to know na may TEDx talks na dito sa pilipinas. we will support this. Salamat
it is very easy to blame a controversial work of art for influencing immoral behavior but i think it's even more immoral to police art just because we are afraid that it might be a bad influence on someone.I think bad people would do bad things regardless and the moment we deny artists the freedom to make something offensive is the moment we deny ourselves the breath of human experience. - Director Jerrold Tarog
then maid in malacanang came along. the movie was offensive in a way that spreads disinformation
Thanks Sir. Jerrold Tarog for the lecture and idea
napakahusay
grave Jerold Tarog is like our modern Mabini version because of how wise he said those words
This goes the same with video games.
Not because na pumapatay tayo sa GTA ay mamamatay tao na tayo.
Agree, even vidoe games have purpose.
