Agreed - this was an absolutely beautiful performance, and it's refreshing to see a dancer who, for once, seems more intent on the music and grace than vice versa. There's nothing wrong with hyperextension, but after a while, it gets to be too much when everybody and their brother, sister, mother, and the cat start doing it, too.

Me fascina!

Thank you esaasia for uploading this video! I'm absolutely thrilled to find it! Aurelie is mesmerizing as usual. Her dancing is poetry to me.

When is comes to the veil pdd, my guess is that it could also be a partnering problem. The tension at which Josua holds the veil affects Aurelie's execution of the steps. There are other aspects of the veil handling that require total cooperation from both dancers as well. Comparing Hilaire and Josua, you might notice that Hilaire did more adjusting, tightening or letting go as required, while Josua seemed a bit passive in that regard.

It's true Guerin was an exceptional Nikiya, but it's a privilege to see Aurelie's interpretation. Guerin's portrayal of Nikiya was more delicate, vulnerable and tragic while Dupont's interpretation is more confident and even victorious in the Shades act.
I've noticed her less than ideal handling of the cloth myself. I guess the reason it stands out is because I'm used to her always flawless and perfect execution of even the most difficult steps.

Aurtelie Dupont is an amazing beautiful ballerina, she is VERY musical as she dances to the music, and does not count. I have seen her dance live on a number of occasions, including two days ago in Manon again with Josua, and he has definatly improved, getting settled into the partnership. I think the problem with the veil in this episode is due to Josua not letting enough fabric loose, so it is tight in the middle with no "give" allowing him to turn it like you would a skipping rope.

Quite agree with you Judith he does seem to be at odds with the choreography and if the music to the male solo gets any slower he will have to stop mid-air!

It's true that the veil pdd on march 22nd was not as smooth the one they danced at the premiere (or as performances from other dancers), but I wouldn't go as far as to call it "less than ideal".
In any case I agree with you that it stands out in comparison to her flawless dancing when it comes to excruciatingly difficult steps, although I read an interview from 2010 where she confessed that the veil pdd was a moment she particularly dreaded in La Bayadère...

I'm just curious. Is it because she changed the choreography? I enjoy the performance with Guerin, Hilaire, and Platel also!

Just another small point Aurelie is much smaller than Josua, so it must be difficult for her to reach the veil if he held it up too high. Her pointe shoes would help to counteract it some what, but not fully.

The scarf variation is so thankless. Tamara Roja, who pulls off triple pirouttes and closes with a quintuple (RB video with Acosta and Nunez) actually uses a workaround with the scarf, doing more like an inside/outside pique. RB and a lot of American companies do the version staged by Makarova, which does have some differences. (I had the same reaction---why are we doing sisonnes here? But I sort of teethed on Makarova's production.)

I actually totally agree with your opinion, sweetaliena. After watching Aurelie & Josua, I watched Guerin and compared, as I felt so uncomfortable watching last week's performance as a whole. Josua's movements of hands looked a lot different from what I've seen before. Hilaire danced completely differently. To me movements and lines of the older recording felt much more beautiful and moving. The way Guerin handles cloth looks so smooth and elegant. Aurelie struggles with it, and I felt sorry.

Sorry this looks to much like a technical rehearsal at the beginning - he is supposed to be in love with her but looks more like hes concentrating so hard on the steps there is no interaction between them Two good dancers but no pas de deux !

I have to disagree. Her interpretation has improved from what I saw when she danced it with Manuel Legris but there's still a lot of reservation in her movement and she often off music and late. Even though I'm really not a fan of Marie-Agnès Gillot, she moved me more than Aurélie Dupont. To me, Isabelle Guérin will be the ultimate Nikiya. There's one Nikiya that I can wait to see, it's Myriam Ould-Braham. I hope someone will posts some of her variations on YT!

It is your very right not to like Aurélie Dupont's performance as Nikiya (or any other). Although I did enjoy her bayadère very much on each three occasions I attended the show in Paris (twice this year, once in 2010 with Nicolas LeRiche and the best I ever saw), there are other ballerinas I find better suited for the part. That being said, you cannot claim that she is unmusical because really, in all good faith, that's not accurate.

No, it's because I find her boring. She never goes to the end of her movements. It's always half way done. I always tried to watch her to see if I was going to like her other performance but no I'm always left for more. Sleeping Beauty was the only performance that I liked from her.
