The sub out is a must. Here's why: "....I reviewed a sub for another publication recently and was surprised by how much it seemed to improve the sound quality in the mid and treble, how on earth could a low frequency driver that was limited to frequencies below 60Hz make the system more revealing higher up the range. I put this question to Hideto Watanabe, senior manager at Eclipse Home Audio who played bassoon and conducted in an orchestra in his youth, a factor that clearly informed his answer. Apparently it comes down to the ‘pyramid’ of dynamics that an orchestra needs to achieve for it to produce what Hideto describes as a ‘rainbow of harmonics’. The pyramid is a tonal one with bass at the bottom as a foundation, midrange notes in the middle and treble at the top; the wider the area of the pyramid that each tonal range occupies the greater the dynamics (power) required from that range. In essence bass notes need to be supporting the mid and treble to achieve a good harmonic result from the entire orchestra.... That being the case you can see how a subwoofer that’s limited to low bass frequencies can assist the main speakers in producing greater harmonic detail in a stereo system."....www.the-ear.net/review-hardware/eclipse-td725swmk2-subwoofer

Hey do you know the difference between these and the r1850db's? I'm new to audio and want to buy my first "nice" speakers for my turntable. They both have sub out which is important to me but the r1850db's are more expensive and I can't seem to find why. Would appreciate your help!
Far as I can tell, the actual speakers (tweeter and woofer) are exactly the same between the two. The frequency response, according to the Amazon listings, are also identical (60hz - 20khz). The r18 has some more inputs and possibly more outputs, so I think you're just paying more for the technology inside the case, not for the sound. Also a nicer remote, maybe? If you're looking to set it up with a record player, either should be pretty much identical. I have the r1700dbs, and they sound good with a turntable. Just be sure to get a turntable with the pre-amp built in or a separate pre-amp, no matter which pair you settle on. I have used and love the Audio Technica LP60x. It's a budget turntable, but it's a very reputable manufacturer, and almost all budget (100 - 150 dollar) turntables use an Audio Technica head anyway, so I figure just get it right from the source. Enjoy!
@@Elia-fo8xg you also might consider R1855DB as they have optical connection, 5.0 Bluetooth and much nicer remote control 😉 cpc.farnell.com/edifier/r1855db-black/speaker-set-bluetooth-multimedia/dp/CS33873
R1850DBs have well defined bass You are most probably not finding R1850DBs because there is a new version out R1855DBs. R1700BT looks same but in some songs bass is not well defined. Problem with both these speakers are they only have 4 inch woofer driver. If you are considering adding a woofer which obviously will cost you more cash I would suggest getting S2000MKIII with these you will not need to spend on extra woofer these have 5.5 inch woofer they sounds awesome on their own.

Hello, I've learned quite a bit about audio equipment and speakers from watching your channel. Thank you for the great content. Since making this video have you found a better bluetooth speaker set? I'm looking for a simple plug & play bluetooth speaker set to connect to my projector for watching movies. Preferably without the need for a sub, since I live in an apartment with a unit below me and want to be respectful.
I own both the 1700 BT and 1700 BTS (the one with subwoofer out), and I don't believe you have to use a subwoofer with either. I was very impressed with the blue tooth performance paired with my phone listening to Spotify on the BT. Hope that helps if your still in stand by mode.

Hi guys! =) Hello from Russia) I choose between Edifier R1280DBs and Edifier R1700BTs, I understand that Edifier R1700BTs should be better in sound, but there is no spdif. Planning to use them with my pc, gigabyte aorus ultra z390 motherboard. Does it make sense to buy R1280DBs just for the sake of spdif? what do you think, which ones are worth taking for the best experience?
Hello, my Russian friend. I think you're getting a bit of a better setup with the R1700bts than the 1280's. You can always buy a super cheap usb to optical converter until you've got the money for a decent stand alone DAC. I'd do the R1700bts with a cheap converter and then add a nicer dac later.

a massive ask from a fan. I'm sorry to ask this 😔 but in looking for a bookself speakers for gaming on low volume 🤔 but want to hear them footsteps with wide sound stage.. I can't wear headphones. I got tinnitus... a big ask from you host but would mean a lot.. budget is around £600 uk boy here.. but as you know you maybe don't have to spend the full ££ to get a good sound... but on the other hand ✋️ you only get what you pay for. want to buy it once not twice lol thanks for your support and time on this channel 👍 God bless
Hi man! I Don't think you can stay competitive in fps\tps games with speakers, at least not without a huge effort. Tough I imagine if you set your whole room up for this very purpose with sound absorbing foam, and with the speakers in the height and literally facing your ears in 180⁰ you'd get much better outcome even with a ~100€ Edifier than going with any 500£+ speaker simply put on your desk. But headphones are just way too good for directional sound. I have the R1280db's on my desk, they're great really but there's no way I can determine the direction other players are approaching me from as close as even a 10 dollar headphone would. And let's say you have 2 monitors, the moment you look at the side monitor your room setup might won't work because your ears are looking at a slightly different angle to where the speakers are so you slightly missplace what you think about the enemy's position.

Sony SSCS-5 in middle eu is sold at 260$ for a pair. So not exactly an option
I am considering buying the version with no sub-out. I understand you could add the sub by splitting the 3.5mm audio out. Do they have the same effect? If so, I could save CAD30
Enjoy!
@@Streckometer thank you! I got the r1700dbs for my audio technica lp120x and I'm super happy with them!
@@Elia-fo8xg you also might consider R1855DB as they have optical connection, 5.0 Bluetooth and much nicer remote control 😉
cpc.farnell.com/edifier/r1855db-black/speaker-set-bluetooth-multimedia/dp/CS33873
@@jagadishbhatta9562 i got a s1000mk2, do u think s2000mk3 is a good upgrade to me?
i just bought r1700bt . should i return them and buy r1700bts intstead ? i use them on a pc , creative ae-5 soundboard , i don`t use particulary , subwoofer, i don`t need it. these cost here about 40 $ more
What kind of DAC are you talking about here? Does it make sense to use a DAC with these speaker at all?
Will you do the edifier 1850dbs?
Old post but I recently bought these speakers. On my desk I have a Fosi DAC-Q4. Connecting them to this dac would improve sound quality over the AptxHD bluetooth 5.0 or not? (aside form losing the bluetooth connection)
hi tryiing to find some rear surrounds with strong bass to make up for the lack of subwoffer, ive got forte II's as fronts... would these work? any better reccomendation?
What do you all think about the Edifier BTS, maybe this one or R1850DB vs say a passive Polk ES-10 with a Loxjie A30 for a desktop PC near field application? Looking for a good desktop set up with higher marks if I can find a white version for wife design approval.
These, or the R1850db, or klipsch r-15pm for my turntable ? I have a klipsch sw-350 sub I may use with them
Hello, I've learned quite a bit about audio equipment and speakers from watching your channel.
Have you tried the Kanto YU6? Whats your top recommendation for a bluetooth capable active desktop/small bookshelf monitor under $400?
I haven't gotten into Powered speakers yet bur probably will.
@@cheapaudioman Powered speakers are real interesting now with all the PC and BT phones playing music. Before the advent of carrying Iphones with music files...active speakers were reduced to esoteric realms (near field monitor speakers for professionals). That's all changed now. Everyone but audiophiles with bucks, want to know...."what are the best powered speakers"? Hope cheapaudioman jumps on this train soon to capture the pulse of a nation.
Just got the 1280T’s. Thinking of returning them for these because the highs in the 1280T’s is lacking. Thoughts?
Did you try the tone controls? The 1700 is not lacking on the high end at all. If you can and aren’t happy I’d go ahead and return
@@cheapaudioman Thank you! I tried some variations on the tone controls but couldn’t get the desired clarity on the highs.
@@roberts4605 well I do not think the 1700’s are lacking on the high end. Get the one with a sub out because the bottom end is lacking.
The 1280T's have a more neutral sound when compared to the 1700's . The 1700's have a v-shaped sound curve and are more "punchy" sounding .
Awesome review, but if it's too bright with michael kiske voice it would sound too harsh for my ears(maybe). Have you tried how it sound with bright music? like jazz I dont know. Without subwoofer
I wouldn't recommend these without using a subwoofer. I don't really listen to jazz accept for Miles Davis.
@@cheapaudioman thank you, you are awesome
can i connect my uphoria umc202hd to these speakers? is it whorth it doing it or ai rather conect them to the pc directly?
Hi, thanks for review.
Randy, when you have time, could you do a review on the Edifier 1280DBs and perhaps suggest which EQ adjustments are needed to clean the sound up. And maybe compare them to the 1700BTS. I own the 1280Ts and the cheap edifier sub woofer, which is not really cheap to purchase. Thanks
I have the Edifier T5 sub-woofer paired with my 1280Ts speakers.
The Sub must be amplified or the speakers will supply the power ?
Any time there's volume and treble/bass control amplifier is built in
I just ordered the R1850 which seems to be a little bit beefier version of this. They were only $80 after Best Buy points. I can't wait to check them out next week!
Can you connect a second set of these on the sub out?
no
Yes you can
Iam bad at English. 2:23 Could someone please tell me what he said there?
"they loosened up and they got a little bit deeper", and he continues with he prefers using with subwoofers.
turn on cc, its pretty accurate
@@whatup8356 thanks!
I got the R1280Ts which is the same thing as these and they have the same remote but without Bluetooth controls.
The 1280 is slightly less powerful at 21 wpc vs 30 wpc
I got these and I have a Xbox one series S and a monitor I can connect these to my monitor right??
can people still hijack the speakers by connecting randomly to Bluetooth?
Nice camera angle ..... I have 4 words for you " bats in the cave"....
How would you hook up a Amazon Alexa or Google device to this to make it “smart”?
Google device -> settings -> one will be destination Bluetooth audio device or similar -> pair with the speakers. Once in a long while the pairing will drop but repeat steps and you'll be back up and running.
♥♥♥Edifier R1700BTS
hello can u plz compare it with edifier s1000mk2?
I tried both. S1000mk2 are much bigger (they weight 16kg), they do sound better and look amazing but they do feel more like a tv/home cinema speakers - it actually made my ears hurt when using them as a near-field speakers. I had to return them and got the 1700bts instead.
@@cheapaudioman oh, why usb to optical, if 1700bts does not have an optical input? Or do you mean run the audio signal like this: pc spdif -> dac (optical to rca) -> speakers?
@@cheapaudioman I watched the video) I got it, thanks for the advice, bro. I will confirm the order in the morning) I left a request for 1700bts in the evening, but began to doubt, now I know for sure that I made the right choice! Thanks again for your advice and good luck with the development of the channel!
@@stereoshock97 yes that’s what I meant. The 1700 is a better speaker than the 1280 in my opinion.

pls do 1000mk ii i just want to hear your honest don't care if its negative
If your adding a 60 dollar sub why not upgrade and get a better speaker package instead?
How much the price?
Is P17 same but passive?
Hello from India and thanks for this video! Can you please do a video for the s1000mkii🙏
Hey anyone here know if this speaker would be better than the Polk s15 or s10? Thanks for the video and to anyone who replies.
R1855DB and the Elac 1010. Heaven.
in my r1700bts the reciver light is on right speakers
i paid 117 usd for these
Interestingly, Edifier doesn't list their frequency response which they do for pretty much all their other speakers
Thats concerning
I have a r2000db but it does not have a sub out .
Can I add edifier t5 subwoofer to r2000db ?
You can connect R2000DB to a subwoofer
@@LUGRable
thanks will try out
You can with a y-splitter but you wont have the high pass filter like you do when you have a sub out.
R1280DBS vs R1700BTS?
Why not flip the video before uploading so it isn't mirrored?
Randy! I need help! I have these speakers. What under $200 sub do you recommend pro use with these? I use these for my TV and movies, and my main speakers to listen to m,y record player with my wife in a small-ish room. Our couch is close to these speakers. I’m looking at the Jamo S808 and S810 and the Polk 10”, Elac 10”, and Yamaha 8’ or 10”. I prefer the look of the Jamo. But its really not a deal breaker. Am i missing anythingnfor a cheap good Sub? If you reply I really appreciate it. I watch all your videos! Love you my man.
Two friends have these RT1700 BTS speakers and rate them as best computer speakers they've every owned. How do I get in touch with the cheapaudioman. There is an Edifier speaker (R2850db) I'd like you to consider for review. Best cheap speakers I've ever heard in that small size.

a massive ask from a fan.
I'm sorry to ask this 😔
but in looking for a bookself speakers for gaming on low volume 🤔
but want to hear them footsteps with wide sound stage..
I can't wear headphones.
I got tinnitus...
a big ask from you host but would mean a lot.. budget is around £600 uk boy here.. but as you know you maybe don't have to spend the full ££ to get a good sound...
but on the other hand ✋️ you only get what you pay for.
want to buy it once not twice lol
thanks for your support and time on this channel 👍
God bless
@@Gaben3210 thank you for your reply 🙏
