Grand Gamers Guild is reimplementing this game into Artemis Odyssey. They are looking to streamline, modernize, and tweek this into a better game. Just some info Tom... Ps it is fun to watch some of your older videos and how they have evolved into the videos we see today. Thanks
This game is a hybrid of Settlers of Catan and Race for the Galaxy, and it may be better than both. The strategy and goals are very similar to Catan, and the ordering of turns is more like Race. Catan is excellent, but the reliance on the luck of a dice roll is weak. This game replaces that luck element with action card placement, giving you another strategy element that keeps everyone involved throughout the each turn. Race is also excellent, but there could be more interaction between players; at times, it feels more like competitive solitaire. As I say, this combines the best elements of both games, and makes a fantastic addition to the rotation for any gaming group who enjoys this type of game.
Yeah, when I introduce Ad Astra to players, I always describe it as Settlers without Dice, and I have definitely felt like Ad Astra made Settlers obsolete in my playgroups.
Thanks for the review - I have this one but haven't played it yet. I actually sold Starfarers before Christmas when it was going for exorbitant prices and bought a big box of games with the proceeds - this one included. I figured it would be a decent replacement and since a reprint of Starfarers is rumored I figured why not. You helped clear up a couple of things I was unsure about - thanks.
I really like those designers. I will try to have game of it this weekend to get my own impressions. So far my favourite space themed game is Race for the Galaxy.
Looks dull. Seems like the player board is a waste... why not just sort your cards in order and leave them in single deck... then all players flip top card for each round?
When you say 'nothing' new. That is the point. It is an upgraded Settlers. If you don't want to buy Settlers. Then really seems like a potentially better game. In other words, it does not matter in the least about how 'new', yet looking at the play it is new in how settlers would play out. It is a different and new format. I don't own Settlers. If I did buy it, it would be Star Trek Catan. I might look at Starfarers, but this is specifically why I was interested in this game. I really don't want to buy Settlers of Catan.

i like the modular planetary systems concept
Reminds me of an Oscar Acceptance speech going over time the way it ends... just start playing the music...
I'm here for the movie.

Well... I thought the artwork was nice. ^^
That's the same thoughts I had of the game. Not really my cup of tea.

no
This game lures you in with a space theme but then lets you down with a super cruddy scoring system. Avoid this game if you are a hard core gamer.
@basilmichael
his filming and production crew is giving him a hard time.
Looks a bit boring to me.
