- Coming up next, a special episode of The Professor of Rock. We have 2 legends on today’s show, Elvis Costello and Paul Carrack, telling the story of one of the greatest songs of all time: Tempted by Squeeze. It’s one of the most well-known classics of the 80s but… it wasn’t actually a hit. It stopped just sort of the top 40. Tempted was recorded by Squeeze's longtime lead singer Glen Tilbrook and then out of nowhere a legendary artist, Elvis Costello, who the band brought in to produce the record felt the song wasn’t quite right. So, Costello, had the whole thing re-recorded and used a newcomer to the band who was hired to replace their long-time keyboardist… and maybe add some background vocals from time to time: Paul Carrack. Tilbrook was Pissed. Not only had he co-written the song but he had a great voice. But Elvis took a chance on Paul and he nailed it. And one iconic line from Tempted became so popular that fans threw toothbrushes on stage at the band whenever it was performed. We have the story from the legendary producer icon who made the controversial decision and the backup singer-keyboardist who made the song iconic next on Professor of Rock.

Today we have 2 special interviews on a classic 80s song: Tempted by Squeeze. Elvis Costello and Paul Carrack who helped bring the classic 80s hit Tempted to life in Squeeze. Amazingly lead singer Glen Tilbrook who co-wrote Tempted with his regular songwriting partner Chris Difford, some even called them the Lennon and McCartney of the 80s, and they knew they had a great hit with Tempted. They were also pumped to record their studio album East Side Story because the record was conceived as an ambitious double (four-sided) LP- that would be produced by some of music’s biggest names at that time, including Sir Paul McCartney, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and Elvis Costello. Well in the end only Elvis stayed and when he made the controversial decision to have the band’s keyboardist and sometimes backup singer Paul Carrack re-record Temped to the chagrin of lead singer Glenn Tillbrook. The crap was hitting the fan. Find out what happened next as we have Elvis and Paul to tell the story Let’s get into it.
Poll; Who is your pick for the MOST UNDERRATED VOCALIST of ALL TIME?
Michael Nesmith.
Brad Arnold - 3 Doors Down
Freddy Curci - Sheriff/Alias
Grant Phillips - Grant Lee Buffalo
J.R. Richards - Dishwalla
Marc Storace - Krokus
Brad Delp
Joe Lynn Turner
Neil Finn, Crowed House
I've always felt that Paul Carrack was underated. He really was an excellent singer. I loved his solo stuff, as well as his work with MIke + The Mechanics.
Same!
He's known as "the man with the golden voice" so not that underrated
Underated in that only music geeks attach his name to his accomplishments. The accomplishments still exist and the checks for residuals are still signed to Paul Carrack.
@@michaelbloomfield9911 - among his peers, you are correct, not underated. but to the general public, especially these days, I feel he is. I had a friend tell me, and I had to agree with her, that most young people don't aspire to be Paul Carrack. they might want to be the next Freddie Mercury or Bruce Springsteen. but nobody says they want to be the next Paul Carrack - and in that sense, he is very underated. :)
He certainly was NOT underrated by ME! And who gives a D what the critics or the masses might think, right?
Paul Carrack's voice was perfect for Tempted. The vocals are filled with an uncertainty that makes you feel as though you yourself are the song's protagonist.
You nailed it!
And that’s what makes the song so effective.
Paul Carrack also sang lead for Mike and The Mechanics, also sang lead for the group Ace ("How Long")
Squeeze is horribly underrated. Such an amazing back catalogue of pop gems
Great songs!
Couldn't agree more 👏
Costello, Carrack, coffee and the Prof.....gonna be a good day!
AGREE 100%
Ha ha! Love it!
@@Lam_3-22-23 Costello is hilarious!
The 3 C's!
🎶Coffee in Bed🎵
Paul was blessed with hitting the charts as a solo act and 3 other bands. 😮
that's right!
Even my Mother asked to go & see him, so I took her along.
She didn't know I had "How Long" & "Tempted" & a HUGE Squeeze fan
We saw Paul Carrack twice, just over 20+ years ago, at our local town
First heard "Tempted" @ Foreigner's "4" tour waiting for band to come onstage
Tempted is one of those songs that you cannot help but to sing along when you hear it. For me, it's impossible to resist.
I NEVER get tired of hearing it. It’s just an amazing, turn it up, but not too high, song.
Paul Carrick is like Cliff Richard , quietly leaving his fingerprints all over the music industry . You look back on their body of work and it really is next level ....
I agree!
@@ProfessorofRock So do I! How about a Cliff Richard feature, POR?
@@shiroibasketshoes💩
Yep.
@@shiroibasketshoes especially covering that mid-70s to 80 period with I'm Nearly Famous and those albums.
Have always loved the imagery of Tempted. Tremendous writing and the correct vocals to go with it
Squeeze is one of the most underrated bands in the rock era. They’ve got so many amazing songs that should have been huge hits. Tempted and Satisfied are two of my all time favorite songs.
Up the junction for me.
@ yes! Take Me I’m Yours, Slap and Tickle, Pulling Mussels, Cool for Cats, all absolutely awesome!
Good call Elvis, I can’t imagine anyone but Paul Carrack singing "Tempted". His voice carries the lyrical story to perfection.
RIght?
It was one of my late boss’s favorite songs. R.I.P.
I’ve heard Tilbrook sing it live and he does a great job with it.
I wanna here the original now.
I was a fan of Squeeze especially with their top songs Cool for Cats, Pulling Mussels from the Shell, Black Coffee in Bed, Goodbye Girl and of course Tempted and I still listen to them occasionally and I remember Paul Carrack who was in Ace replacing Jools Holland who later had a talk show
on for awhile. Thanks for more memories of classic rock music and the
real stories behind them Thanks Professor.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
Up the junction was a pretty big hit in the UK
Thanks ROger!
Pulling Mussels is such a cool song.
Such a huge Paul Carrack fan! ❤❤❤thank you so much for posting this!
It's such a great song. There are some absolutely deadly live versions of it out there. I'm stoked you chose to feature this song.
I remember hearing this song randomly all over the place in the mid 90's... never found out who sang it until very recently in the past couple or so years. Very nostalgic, very soulful. I fell down a Paul Carrack rabbithole in the past couple of years rediscovering how many songs he sang on that I recognize from my youth in the 80's.
More than most people think.
"Tempted" is such an excellent song. Paul's voice made for it. Thanks for another great episode!
For sure!
@@ProfessorofRock = You "Hit The Bullseye" on this episode Adam !!
2 of my favs Elvis and Squeeze. thanks prof
Love this song. The different vocals really make it what it is.
Paul was the natural choice with his soulful voice. He showed his chops with Ace. After Squeeze, he was killer in Mike and the Mechanics and on his solo work. Don't She'd a Tear was a big hit and all over the radio when I was younger.
The first time I saw MTV, Tempted was a strong song in its play list. I still love that song today. Over the years since I learned that Paul Carrack sang that song. Later I became familiar with the groups he sang with like Ace, and Mike and the Mechanics. But only after his song Don’t Shed a Tear that I realized that he sang all those great songs. Paul Carrack has a great voice.
Don’t Shed a Tear is fantastic!
I have always loved Squeeze. Yes, Mike and the Mechanics too!
Paul Carrack was also brought in to play on The Smiths’ debut album in 1984
Paul Carrack has an awesome voice. Love him.
EPIC SONG! And I appreciate it more and more as years go by and my experiences grow.
Paul Carrack is one of my favorite artists of all time. I wore out the tape of Groove Approved back in the day. he also seems like a truly nice and humble guy
He is awesome!
@@ProfessorofRock "How Long" has so many memories attached to it for me
I love GROOVE APPROVED. Very disappointed it didn't chart higher.
He’s so sweet.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Just a class act for sure :)
I've been waiting for this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Adam, Tempted is a great song and the story of the song is so cool.
Great interview(s)and insight on a timeless song.
Hourglass is one of my favorite by Squeeze that came out much later.
Cool!
Ah man, I love this song. Perfect voice for this song
I used to get up early in the morning to do homework before school and I would listen to the radio. As soon as I heard this song then I knew it was great. It used to be the song I wanted to hear in those morning homework sessions.
Very cool!
It’s a bop!
Elvis Costello??? Dude, you are moving up. 👍👍
Really? I interviewed Brian Wilson 10 years ago.
@@ProfessorofRock You and Rick Beato are killing it lately.. appreciate it
I WAS SO EXCITED
That song 🎵 captured the ethos of the 80’s perfectly.
Both seem very personable. Nice as usual,Prof
Fun interviews!
I'm lucky enough to be going to see squeeze this Friday night, unfortunately Paul won't be there, I've seen them live before and they never disappoint 😊
One of my absolute favorite songs to sing. If there's a karaoke show, it's this song and "Biggest Party Of Me" by Ambrosia. Yes, after 40 years, I can still hit those David Pack high notes.
This was a fantastic video. My first comment on this channel after watching many of your videos. I really liked the song Tempted (it's truly a nostalgic one), and the behind the scenes of it was a very interesting story to inform us of. Thanks for the interviews and thanks so much.
Paul Carrack voiced 3 huge songs with 3 different bands. The Man with the Golden Voice.
The song is timeless!!!
This is a good one Prof!! Well done.
A girl in my dorm would call my radio show and request this song, almost every week. Late 80’s. Those were magical years. Great to get the back story to this one. I figured something was up. The original video is hard to find on the internet. Last time I tried all I came up with was a, what seemed to be purposefully, degenerated version. EC and BB were fantastic in Austin Powers…Thanks POR
OMD! As I've told you before, Paul Carrack is one of my all time favs. I can't wait to watch yet another vid about him. Thanks, Adam. You are the best and your musical taste, exquisite.
Thanks my friend!
@@ProfessorofRock Please be sure to read my other comment on yesterday's vid. Thanks again, Adam.
What a wonderful interview. Felt like I was sitting at a campfire, roasting marshmallows, and hearing some great old stories. This had been one of the songs that I’d always wondered about in many ways. I wanted to know who the players were. Now, knowing how the song came about, it’s become even more wonderful.thank you so much for bringing this to us.
I'm a big Squeeze fan,I've been to a few of their shows. You really have some interesting interviews.
Cool!
The part of the song that really sticks to me is those piano keys, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. I always have that caught in my mind after listening to it.
For sure!
Oh yes!
Paul Carrack is an incredible vocalist.
Great interview with Paul Carrack and the disembodied head of Elvis Costello LOL
Paul Carrack is one of the most underrated vocalists of the rock and roll era. His vocals make that song memorable. 🎤🎶
He's actually top 10 for me!
Indeed!
Paul is one of the best vocalists ever. I could listen to him sing commercial jingles all day. He’s got an incredible voice.
Tempted is such an awesome song! Hearing it on the radio is what turned me on to Squeeze, but I remembered Paul's singing for Ace, then Mike + The Mechanics .. great music destined to last for generations!
Thanks for doing this one. Tempted is one of my favorite songs.
Love this song! The organ in the intro and throughout is luscious.
I remember sing my heart out along with this song. I am very disappointed to learn that it wasn't a bigger hit! 🇨🇦
Adam- have you ever had a video on the Cowsills? I think that would be interesting. Thanks for sharing
Squeeze ! I remember first seeing them on SNL in 86 or 87 "..she's gone electric, Annie get your guuunn !.." Great band
Was she's gone electric about a women choosing a her vibrator over her boyfriend?
My favorite song! Saw them live in the 80's. It was fantastic.
One of my favorite songs and bands. Got to see them live at my old college in March of '88. Both Paul and Jools had come back for the album and tour. What a night😊
10:35 Actually, that's Glen singing Woman's World. Elvis is thinking of Someone Else's Heart, that's the song where Chris is singing an octave higher than normal.
Really dig carrack been a fan since how long first came out...totally underrated artist.
This song was huge enough for me to hear it regularly on the radio in the middle of nowhere USA. Or maybe somebody at the AM radio station just liked the song enough to insist. 💜
So glad you did this episode! After The Beatles, Squeeze is my favorite band and “East Side Story” is their masterpiece! One correction: the song which Elvis said he had Chris Difford sing higher than notmal was “Someone Else’s Heart”. EC must have confused it as Glenn Tilbrook sang “Woman’s World”. You should have Glenn and Chris on the show to have them talk about their take on “Tempted”, and of course some of the other great songs they wrote together.
Snowed yesterday, still snowing today! Have about 6-8 inches now! 🤠

Incredible. Mind blown on this one. Nooo idea this was such a unique vocal i.e not a regular singer. I always liked Squeeze growing up but didn't know much about them and only hat 45's/singles. The Ace song is awesome - I had no idea. I feel like a kid again at 56 learning this.
Thanks for another lesson, Professor. In all these many years, I had not known Carrack was part of Ace and sang How Long; I feel so dumb and so ashamed right now.
Great episode! Squeeze is one of my favorite bands, and one that I think is totally underrated!!! I'd love to hear more squeeze stuff... and maybe an interview with Glen and Chris too.
I hope there's a Paul Carrack interview on "Don't Shed a Tear" in the POR can right now!
A thought: perhaps you and/or your producer can offer to coach the Elvis Costello's and Lou Gramm's of the world on using Zoom as a perk of doing your show...a few of our beloved legends could sure use it!
I can't tell if I took acid or if Elvis Costello did.
One of my favorite songs as I lived it. Fantastic song; and the singing is wonderful. Especially the growl towards the end. As a singer myself, I use this to practice.
To quote one of Elvis' lyrics that fits this experiment, Accidents will happen.
This was great and oh how I love this song.
I should have known Elvis Costello was behind this! Timeless song!
Paul looks like Russell Crowes body double in his elder years. Very underrated band. Great job as usual, Professor
I think at one point during the interview Elvis had his right foot over his left shoulder?
East Side Story is my favourite Squeeze album. Such an awesome record. I've only seen the band live once but I am glad that it was on the tour for that album.
Fantastic story. Thank you.
Up the Junction was my favourite Squeeze song 😊
Great episode. Classic song. Interesting story. I knew Paul sang the first verse and chorus, and Glen the second, but I always though Chris did the low voice, because he did in the MTV video.Interesting connection back to Sting: I saw The Police at the Hartford Civic Center. I knew the song Tempted from MTV, and thought it was good. But at The Police concert, it was pumped out through the amazing PA system the Police brought at high volume before the Police took the stage. At that moment it went from being a good song in my mind to as musical masterpiece hearing it all the glory of high fi sound system. It remains a masterpiece in my mind to this day. I am also a huge Elvis Costello fan but wasn't aware of his connection to this song.
Clever lyrics and great singer!
Squeeze's songs were always so intricate and intoxicating. Their use of wordplay and imagery made them one of the handful of rock-era bands whose work could stand up to the great American songbook writers like Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, and Cole Porter.
" How Long" with ACE, stuff with Mike & the Mechanics great voice.
I was immediately hooked on this song after the seeing the video premier on MTV as a young teen boy. AGL, It was the backup singers. IYKYK.
Leave it to Elvis to screw around with his video feed. Feather in your cap Adam.
I knew about Squeeze, Mike And The Mechanics and Paul as a solo artist, but I had no idea that he was in Ace. I love that song How Long Has This Been Going On. Love Tempted, The Living Years, and Dont Shed A Tear For Me big time. A phenomenal singer for sure!
It’s a song that grows on you, which might explain why it wasn’t a big hit but much loved.
Squeeze were on a fantastic roll of albums at the stage of their career 1979s cool for cats and 1980s argybargy were amazing albums and showed off their talents for amazing pop hooks and humourous and heartfelt songwriting and then there's east side story and Paul carrack added that extra special something to this band he fit right in with Glenn and Chris and all together created an 80s classic that's still fresh and powerful today in 2024
One of my favorite songs! ❤
That was Pure Staxx Brother... Tempted in C.
Paul Carrack... So versatile!
Hey Flave! Yes he is!
I’m not finished watching the interview, but I hope you got the stories of Ace’s “How Long”, Mike & The Mechanics’ stuff like “The Living Years” and Paul’s solo work like “Don’t Shed A Tear”! I look forward to more from Paul soon!
One of my first reactions was for Squeeze hourglass, a song I remember singing along to as a kid. Both Hourglass and Tempted still certified bangers.
Tilbrook is certainly an awesome singer too!
I discovered Tempted in 1989 when I picked up a Paul Carrack compilation CD, which I picked up primarily for the hit How Long, which he did with Ace. When I gave the disc a play thru, Tempted stood out to me. I thought it was a great song and couldn't believe it was as unknown as it was. Of course as time went on, I heard in various movies and such, so I found it wasn't as unknown as I thought.
I like Squeeze music. I saw the current lineup of Squeeze October 3, 2023. Glen Tillbrook does a good job singing 'Tempted'.
My favorite songs are Pulling Muscles From a Shell, Black Coffee in Bed, Nail in My Heart, and Hourglass. The blend of Glen and Chris singing together is unique.
They had so many great songs!
I still like Carrack on Tempted better. I think Elvis made the right call!
@@ProfessorofRockPaul Carrack is a good singer. I like him with Mike and the Mechanics too.

My first time commenting as well. Always wondered why Carrack sang this song! Also, East Side Story is chock full of great “stories” ….Squeeze deserved a lot more attention than they got. Interesting lyrics, melodies and playing. Because of the Beatles I am a lifelong Squeeze fan.
SQUEEZE!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yay! 💃
YES!
I saw Ace back in the 70"s opening for Yes at a stadium show , priceless memories indeed !
Saw the same show in Seattle. Hated the newspaper pre review by a 'jaded' new columnist: Ace and Yes, two simple bands with simple names' we led a pettition to have him fired. Great show, got to experience from the house mix position, lucky me!
I remember seeing Paul perform Tempted during the intermission of the Roger Waters Radio KAOS tour. Certainly not the first place you'd think to see it performed, but he was playing keys for Waters' band at the time and did a phenomenal job.
I saw Paul Carrack singing “High Time We Went” to close Eric Clapton’s show in Austin a few years back. He was amazing.
Love your content. I don’t know if you take requests however I would be very interested in hearing a breakdown of an incredible singer songwriter Laura Nyro she wrote so many songs that became number one hits by other people that we all know or people of our age, all know such as stone soul picnic And When I Die CCR covered it. Wasn’t it the fifth dimension that it Stoned Soul Picnic. And this writer and singer she had her own hits on her own too. Wrote all this shit in like 1958. I’m sure you’re familiar with her, but she has so many credits for writing huge hits, in fact, Joni Mitchell actually had a lot of respect for her and we all know what Jon’s like
