- Before 1972, Sri Lanka used to be called Ceylon. I take a look at stamps from Ceylon, and the fascinating history with the country's connection to tea.

I'm from Sri Lanka and I'm really happy you talked about this stamp. There's a dark past for tea in Sri Lanka too. For instance, when the Sinhalese people refused to work in estates, the British decided to bring some of the poorest people down from South India and had them do slave labour for them for a very small salary. They established taverns in every one of these small estate villages, so that as soon as the estate workers receive their salaries they will spend almost all of it in the tavern; that's how the colonial empire got their money back. To this day, they struggle with these habits that have been forced on them for generations. Tea was also not an endemic plant or a plant found in Sri Lanka, it was brought down as a cash crop by the British and many of the beautiful virgin forests of Sri Lanka were decimated for tea. Tea is also a heavy loss-making industry in Sri Lanka now too, so although these workers are now fighting for a bigger salary, it's difficult to give them hikes due to the heavy losses the industry is making. So when I see the tea-plucking lady on the stamp I see all her difficulties and struggles too.
As a life-long stamp collector and a professional cultural historian, I am delighted to have discovered your channel. Your presentations are interesting, well-illustrated, and informative on both counts, and I thoroughly enjoy them. I began collecting in grade-school, and found that my hobby opened up so many interests: geography, history, culture, economics, art and design, and so many others. And I continue (at 80) to learn from it, and from presentations like yours. Thanks.
Thank you so much for reminding the history and beauty of Ceylon. My motherland 💓 Sri Lanka is obviously a beautiful country!!! All of these stamps significantly features the country's history, flora, fauna and prosperity of land such as gemstones, produce and lush agriculture. What I love about these stamps are the crafty artwork and the vibrant colors. I'm not a huge collector but I have a moderate amount of stamps which reminds my childhood & makes me to collect even more!

I’m from Sri Lanka and I been collecting since I was 7. I have many stamps old and new, first day covers. Sri Lankan stamps have national hero’s, ancient histories and cultural practices

I always avoided drinking tea (or coffee) when working on my stamps as tea (or coffee) does not go well with stamps.
Still have a few brown stained stamps lying around somewhere.
But after watching another great video presented in the Exploring Stamps series I changed my mind, tea and stamps do go together.

AWESOME VIDEO, all made possible by exploring a stamp. My brother and I climbed Adam's Peak (we also visited some tea plantations, and saw people tapping rubber - another favourite Ceylon postage stamp!). You start the climb at around 2am, walking by moonlight and you reach the summit just as the sun is abut to rise. It is beautiful and well worth a cuppa at the top.
Ah that sounds terrific. While reading up about Adam's Peak I saw loads of pictures and video from travelers doing that hike. It looks beautiful. PS I know exactly which 'tapping rubber' stamp you are talking about, next time I see you we will have to have a cup of Ceylon while you tell me more about the trip! Thanks as always :D

Very interesting story about tea and stamps. But before Ceylon had changed to tea production. Another story about tea brings rise to the existence of other postal entities. I am of course mentioning here the two Opium Wars over the plot by Britain to balance its trade deficit with China and its tea trade with GB by getting China hooked on opium consumption. The wars created Hong Kong and the other treaty ports. This would make a great topic for one of your videos.

Fascinating how much you can learn from stamps indeed! This is a great example of how deep a line of inquiry can go. Thank you for showing us all how to be inquisitive about the world through stamps. One request- I miss that sound effect of the stamping of the cancellation on the early episode title screens! What’s a technical skill you are working on developing now? It’s been great seeing you improve the episodes over time.
Thank you Mike, it certainly is fascinating how much you can learn from stamps... my general knowledge has improved significantly since starting this project. The stamp sound effect was for season 2 intro, perhaps I should use it again if I consider a season 4? Still working on mixing graphics with real footage, more to come this season. A good follow up to this video.

Superb video! So exotic and well made! By the way, may I just point out that Sri Lanka (or Lanka) is not a name that was just coined in the latter half of the last century. The name was in existence prior to it being christened as Ceilao by the Portuguese and variations since then, including Ceylon. In fact, in the Indian mythology and religious text, Ramayana, this very island was in existence and it was known as Lanka or Sri Lanka. It is a very ancient land. Maybe you mentioned all this in the context of stamp and postal history but it almost sounded as if this country was nameless till the Portuguese arrived.

I take it that Lipton was the first brand name to sell retail? What was Tetley’s origin...do you know?

Thank you John. From my understanding, Tetley was more of a tea merchant that started in the 1830s long before Lipton... they introduced tea bags to the UK. Lipton actually owned tea fields but started much later. Tetley started with salt in the 1820s in Yorkshire, while Lipton started as a chain of Grocery stores in the 1870s.... I find it interesting to learn about.

Yes it’s infinite when it comes to collecting stamps. I have a collector friend and he only collects stamps, from the year he was born in. I read (or saw) that there was a collector who only collected stamps, with cows on them facing right. I collect worldwide thank goodness
@@SuperLpark Oh definitely, in a couple of my vids I have covered the cows facing left. top topics and visiting the stamp show. you can really pick how small or open your scope of collecting can be... collecting your birth year is pretty cool, I hadnt thought of that.

Well there is a pretty open market for cows facing right... the demand for left is significantly greater...So I encourage philatelists to seek out the right facing cows to keep balance in the philatelic universe. :)

Interesting tea fact: While China is the largest grower of tea, virtually none of it is exported. Almost all tea comes from somewhere else.
That IS an interesting tea fact! It made me look up some other facts, China as a country is by far the largest consumer of tea, but per person it goes to Turkey, Ireland and the UK. Interesting!
