    Introduction
    The newly released Yamaha P145 is the best-selling digital piano in the USD500 range. Today, we’ll be comparing it to the Roland FP-10, the oldest digital piano in this category, having launched in late 2019.
    What’s the right piano for you and does the new outdo the old?
    Specifications
    Roland FP-10
    The Roland FP-10 comes with 96 notes of polyphony and two six-watt downward-facing speakers. Its SuperNATURAL tone engine is one version prior to the current one, and it has 15 onboard voices; expanding to 34 when used in conjunction with the Roland piano app.
    The FP-10 comes with built-in Bluetooth MIDI to connect Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices and to connect wirelessly to the app.
    With a PHA-4 action, a pro-level action available in a wide variety of Roland models, you get great weighting, a triple sensor, escapement simulation, and a nice texture on both the black and white keys. This is the most current version of the action with an improved factory application and type of grease that keeps the key lubricated and click-free even if the piano is stored on its side.
    This is not a renamed version of Ivory Feel G action, and getting this action at this price point is impressive
    Yamaha P-145
    The Yamaha P-145 comes with 64 notes of polyphony and two seven-watt backward-facing speakers. It comes with the CFIIIS tone generator, as opposed to the CFX which is used in higher-level models and has 10 onboard sounds.
    The CFIIIS is a more simplified tone engine than the Roland SuperNATURAL with one engine versus Roland’s four.
    While there is no built-in Bluetooth MIDI included, there is an adaptor available for purchase.
    The P-145 has a compact action, similar to the updated 125 and 225, with a shortened pivot length and increased weighting. The downside of this is that there is a greater resistance differential from the front to the back of the keys. That being said, this would only really be noticeable to more advanced players.
    Yamaha has kept shiny white keytops and matte black keys from earlier models.
    Both of these digital pianos can layer two sounds and have basics like an onboard metronome.
    Stu’s Thoughts
    While there are still features of the Roland that are better than the Yamaha, the Yamaha has dramatically improved over the Roland in two areas. Foremost is the speaker reconfiguration. The P-145 puts out not only more sound but a more balanced sound than the FP-10. The inclusion of sound ports in the top of the keyboard provides some secondary tone to the player, similar to having a small tweeter. This makes the Yamaha clearly better when it comes to the volume and detail of sound.
    That being said the Roland piano tone is more complex and dynamic, and when listening with headphones, the speaker benefit becomes mute. The feel of the keys on the Yamaha when playing more challenging repertoire is still an issue, but the audience for the P-145 is not a professional player.
    Cost
    The Roland costs USD599, CDN849, and weighs 30 lbs. The Yamaha is available for USD500, CDN799 and weighs just under 25 lbs; one of the lightest on the market.

    Great. It's such a personal thing and, as you always say, people must go and FEEL and LISTEN to them. I'm afraid I had a Yamaha. Never again. Spent my life using the soft pedal to get rid of the brittle harshness of the sound. Switched to Kawai (love it) and, at my mother's home, the FP10. Very satisfied. Great sounds (all of them) and a very satisfying action. Speakers have never worried me - I've played for quite large groups of people with the keyboard. I like the relatively low weight too. I use my mother's walker to move the piano around her retirement complex to play for them all! But the headphone output is very weak, so (and I have three different sets - including Bose and Grado and Sennheiser) I never got the volume I wanted from them. Love the new Roland app as well.

      The headphone output of most of the digital pianos is too low but FP-10 is very bad in this respect (P-225 is not much better and Casio PX-S5000 is even worse). I use Sennheiser HD 600 and HiFiMan headphones.

    I purchased the Roland only recently, without trying out the competitors, and relying on research alone, - a bit of a gamble as I had never even sampled the Roland's action.
    I must say, I think I made the right choice, as i wanted the most realistic action as a priority over features and in built sound.
    Im more than satisfied, having since tried the yamaha and a similarly priced korg.

      I agree. The Roland FP 10 has the best action for that price you will ever get. I was floored by how good it is after owning a Yamaha P 45 and a P 145. You have to spend 3000 on a Yamaha digital to get action as good. If you hold a key with thumb and second finger, bring it down a bit and jiggle it, you can feel hammers banging around inside the keys. That is fantastic and gives it an authentic grand piano feel, together with the textured keys - which you never get on other brands of this price.
      The Yamaha P 145 is no where near as good, and the keys make a rattling sound. With the FP 10 the keys are fairly quiet when playing on low volume without headphones. I know, because when I do a video recording I hardly hear any sound from the keys, but with the P 145 I was hearing loud rattling sounds. I have way more control when playing the FP 10 compared to the P 145, because the latter's action is lighter and no where near as good.

      @@franksmith541 thank you. 4 months later on and i'm still over the moon with it.
      The PHA 4 action plus optional use as a midi controller were the only things I was bothered about.
      It's for home use not stage, and if you really want more powerful and rich sound you can always use an amplifier with external speakers.
      And more sounds are optional too by the app if required.
      I did get the chance to compare the yamaha afterwards, and I never expected to find such an incredible difference.
      Well pleased.
      I have since purchased the authentic Roland wooden stand and seat.

    Thank you for a VERY intelligent and interesting comparison review. I have just ONE comment I hope you will take on board ... the issue of Key PIVOT length! As a professional musician (pianist, MD, others stuff too), is possibly one of the MOST important things in any keyboard I would consider playing. Like, give me a Steinway Model D for starters, and work back from there. However, I also need keyboards that don't cost the earth, to chuck in the back of a car for an ad-hoc outdoor gig. But still NEED those to have flexible, natural, LONG-PIVOT actions, because YES - I consider ANY part of the exposed parts of the keyboard, to be my playing surface.
    And on THIS one aspect, and based on your video, AND as a life-long Yamaha player - I think the Roland FP10 wins out here!
    But again, THANKS. Great comparative review. But please always bear in mind, even PROS want cheap keyboards for dodgy locations! :-)

      @MerriamPianos  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for tuning in and for the feedback! Every player is a bit different of course and different elements will be more/less important to to different players. With that said, we do our best to tackle all of the pertinent topics to make sure that everyone feels informed about the design elements that they prioritize or consider important. To that point, I think a deep dive video that tackles pivot lengths of various digital piano actions would be extremely exciting and compelling! Thank you for the suggestion. We really appreciate it! :)

    You do good unbiased reviews! IMO, Roland is genarally a better value. You get more useful features for the money. I bought an FP-30X for less than either of these. Yamaha is almost never discounted. I do wish both companies would include better sounding samples on lower end pianos. The Roland Piano App gives more sounds to play around with but most of them are not high quality. Hopefully, over time, they'll improve some of the sounds on the App. I've been experimenting with MIDI and VST's. Some VST's are very good. BTW, I've seen a lot of reviews for the Yamaha DGX-670. I think people tend to be gaga over the quality of the samples and disregard it's shortcomings.

    All I can say is that after three weeks, I returned Yamaha P-225 (slightly better P-145) and got FP-10 ACR (in a Costco bundle). I went through quite a few digital pianos in the last three years (including Roland FP-90X and Yamaha P-515) but I am back to the basic PHA-4 action keyboard that I use as a MIDI controller for my piano VSTs. I am only interested in acoustic piano sound without any bells and whistles. PHA-4 action appeared to be relatively close to Yamaha C7 grand piano action that I regularly practice on.

      I have an FP-30X and have been playing around with VST's too. It opens up a whole new world. Especially when you get bored with piano. I wish Roland supplied better quality samples for the other sounds. But I guess that's how they tempt you to upgrade to a higher model.

    Looking for a value option for some silent nighttime practise and probably going with the Roland or a Kawai ES120. When I upgrade the acoustic piano would you recommend the Kawai GL10 or save the extra and get a K800?

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The FP10 and ES120 are both excellent choices! The decision between a GL10 and K800 is a highly personal and subjective matter of course. Personally, I would choose the K800 as it is a higher quality instrument and soundboard, which leads to a nicer, more nuanced tone (which is saying something considering how great the GL10 sounds!). But, a grand piano comes with its benefits of course: the feel of the action thanks to gravity and the aesthetic factor.

    Has anyone opened up a P-145 or P-225 and check if the keys are pivoted or hinged? By hinged I mean the key has a flexible part bending instead of a pivot pin. I briefly tried it at a Yamaha Music School, and it felt like the key is still flexing on a thin section of plastic.

      Yes - Roland does not have a formal stock image of the PHA4 standard, so I believe this image was used as a place holder. I just went to the store and tried playing yamaha P145 and Roland FP30X. Initially I wanted a Roland but after playing all the keys and feel the touch, I made up my mind. I choose P145, the graded hammer and sound system is just wow. Roland sounds too artificial and the touch totally isn't my preference. I thought I wanted Roland after watching so many reviews on TH-cam. But you have to try it yourself playing both of them at the store! The sound differs from the ones in YT. Nice little comparison. Your reviews are part of the reason I ended up choosing an FP-10 a month ago. The speakers are definitely extremely mediocre, but the sound over headphones is absolutely fantastic. The action is very good, but the keys are a fraction sluggish in returning to neutral. Fast trills or repeated notes can take some getting used to, and your speed for fast repeated notes might be hampered a bit compared to other actions. But, it feels like a minor issue that might matter to some but likely not most.

Now I’m at an intermediate level and will be late intermediate level but the end of this year and have decided to get a kawai GL-10 in 4-5 months time as a reward to all the time I’m spending on this beautiful instrument. With that said I’ll still keep my favourite FP-10 with me for silent practice late nights or early morning or to record my playing!
    Just wanted to know how were you able to capture the FP-10 sound directly as line out? If I’m not wrong it doesn’t that direct line out hence i use it as midi to record in GarageBand. Is that feature got added to FP-10 recently??

      The Kawai GL10 is an amazing piano and unquestionably one of the best cost-to-value ratios on the market right now. I know you will be very happy with that model! Furthermore, I think it is a great idea to keep the FP10 to serve as a portable or silent practice option when needed.
      In terms of capturing the direct line-out sound, that is achieved by taking the headphone output. While this output is usually lower output than a dedicated line-out, it still serves as a direct output feed from the tone engine. Thanks and hope this helps!

    I still insist that someone should let Roland know, that their Supernatural sound engine does better in terms of reproducing the authenticity of an acoustic than their newly modeled generator in the FP-90X. If one really works in the supernatural engine and fixes a few things i'm sure that sound engine will deserve a top place in all their most expensive pianos. It does sound good!
    I purchased the FP30 almost 4 years ago also thanks to Stu's splendid reviews, but it was really easy to see how well done that piano sound was compared to the competition. Now 4 years later it still holds its place with ease, showing us again how stalled the technology of digital piano making really is.

      Hi! Brent here! Thanks for the kind words and support! I know Stu and our production team appreciate them immensely. We're happy to hear that you are still enjoying your Roland FP30. It is a fantastic piano with a great touch and tone! While there are many pianists out there that share your sentiments about the SuperNATURAL tone engine, tonal preferences are very subjective. The context of use also matters too of course. Some players find the SuperNATURAL tones to be more authentic given their sample-based infrastructure. With that said, the Pure Acoustic Piano Modelling engine on the FP90X has its fanbase (and for good reason!). It is extremely flexible and offers immense customization. It is particularly a strong preference for players in the pop realm or gigging with ensembles. With that said, it all comes down to finding a tone that you resonate with. It sounds like you have found that in the SuperNATURAL engine, which still holds up as one of the most natural-sounding and best value engines on the market. Thanks again and happy playing! :)

      Brent it’s very meaningful that you take the time to respond to people’s questions and ideas in your channel. I wonder if that’s better than your musical reviews!
      Thanks a lot !
      I think the authenticity of reproducing a certain sound cannot be subjective. Something either sounds like something else or it doesn’t. But that aside people might like sounds which bring their own quality in the world of pianos and every other instruments for that matter. The modeled pianos from Roland do just that. The sampled ones from Nord do the total opposite. It’s good we can choose but it would also be good if the digital piano companies would speed up their game and close at least slightly the gap with VSTs.

    I suspect the FP10 wins on the action and the Yamaha on sound. I find the PHA4 action very playable. You need to go higher on the Yamaha line for something similar. Having said that I really love the action and sound of my P515! The prices for both P145 and FP10 in Europe are about the same (about 10 euros apart). Ciao, mi diverto a provarli nel negozio di strumenti musicali. Preferisco la tastiera di Roland ed il suono di Yamaha. Il prezzo di Roland fp10 in Italia è davvero basso meno di 400,00 eur. Un vero best buy.

      For sure! It is always best to test pianos out and compare them in person whenever possible. I can certainly understand your preference being the FP10 for touch and P145 for tone. I tend to prioritize touch given that it is the invariable component of a piano. You can always plug a piano into an amplifier for more speaker power or access VST sample libraries via MIDI for different piano sounds, but you are stuck with the action ultimately.

    Too many people report PHA 4 notorious clicking action noise problem - from basic FP10, through FP 30, up to more expensive RP series. Its seems universal, and ragged from Rolands side. Their narration (now) is to blame the customer. Firstly they said, it was fault of vertical storage at container ship, now it switched to at home closets.
    For me, the situation is not a synonym for a serious company.
    Personally - PHA 4 action is too slow, too heavy and not so responsive throuout. Kawai; even basic RHC, doing much better job, even on entry level price point

    • @mfurman
      @mfurman 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree that PHA-4 is noisy. GHC action is probably the most quiet action I played but I still ended up with PHA-4 because it is actually relatively similar to an acoustic piano action. I stopped paying attention to the noise of the action (Yamaha C7 action is even noisier and I usually play on FP-10 ACR with my headphones on.

      @@mfurman If so, I would compare PHA 4 action to an upright - slightly unregulated, clunky, older, heavy action upright. Nowhere near to lighter grand piano action. I do agree though, that yamahas { any } grand piano is more on heavier side in terms of touch.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi - Brent from Merriam Music here. I believe this to be a bit of a fallacy based on our experiences with the Roland line and models that utilize the PHA4 action. In fact, upon doing a thorough report on warranty claim rates across all of the piano lines/models we represent, I can confirm that the PHA4 action has one of the lowest warranty claim rates of any action at any price point. Beyond the PHA4 action's reliability, it is also one of the most authentic feeling actions on the market that is available in the entry-level price range.
      While some players may find the action to be on the heavy side, this can often be a byproduct of not having much experience with acoustic pianos. A heavier touch is better for technique building and also provides a greater sense of connectivity to the player, which, in turn, allows them to control articulations and dynamics far better. Like anything new of course, it does take a bit of time to adapt to a heavier touch though. But the benefits are very worth while!

    • @MerriamPianos

      Personally, aside from isolated incidents, I have not experienced a clicky key problem with the FP10 or PHA4 action. In fact, the PHA4 action has one of the lowest warranty claim rates across every single manufacture/model that we carry. Given that the PHA4 action is a heavier action with pronounced escapement, there will be some mechanical noise, but this is the case with virtually all actions (including acoustic piano actions, which can be demonstrated on acoustic hybrids that have a silencer on them).
