And look at where the Beijing metro is now! Damn I miss it so much.
Nico The Chinese people's pursuit of money is something you can't think of. Thirty years ago, China's per capita GDP was only a few hundred dollars. At that time, we saw that Japan's per capita gdp was tens of thousands of dollars. We knew the gap, and we wanted to live like that. Study hard, work hard. There is an old Chinese saying, 天道酬勤,It means that God will help hard-working people succeed.

Everywhere the drain has a U-bend, even in the US. so the easy thing to do is to put baking soda with vinegar into the sink, it will help flush the drain and deodorize the drain.
Yes, mix a cup of baking soda with half a cup of water. Stir the mixture well. Pour in the drain. Wait 10 to 15 seconds. Then pour two cups of vinegar in the drain. The combination of baking soda and vinegar will cause a chemical reaction to release a lot of carbon dioxide. The bubble will flush the stinky buildup in the pipe. Should do this once a week.
After living in the apartment for 7 to 8 years ,we need to a plumber to do a cleaning in the U -shaded pipe. This is normal practice, nothing to complain about.
I started missing China in my first term. In Melbourne, life was even harder at the weekend if we wanted to travel to places. Time we waited for the public transport took even longer.
Thanks Nico for your great video ! Extra info for those interested : For flights , too expensive , not necessary if no timing requests , less comfortable in seats , so people made their choices . For QR code everywhere , it is a replacement of credit card for a huge amount of people , and from the way I see it , the ability to make it effortless and available (network , phones , ecosystem , etc...) in a huge country like China is a miracle and you don't see that anywhere. For the bill of your phone and network , imagine a combinition of Verizon & half-way-google-fiber that cost you 50$/month at top , yes you do get both by that price . For your drains , some houses like you rent are built decades ago so the quality back then is definitly not as good as nowadays , you can't just destroy all those houses and rebuild . One tip is to get a professional to clean the drains and use filers . Last but not least , remember decades ago how poor this country is .
Hi Nico, I lived in China for 4 wonderful years with my Chinese wife. We were in Shandong. Absolutely jaw dropping, how quickly the construction industry will drop a 5 story building, only to put up a magnificent 32 story building. Underground carparks of 3 levels, shopping of 3 levels, then all the rest apartment. Great to watch the progress, It probably took just 3 weeks to completely drop and remove the old building.
@graham ralston, I wish the construction companies here in the US work that fast! Here in my neck of the woods of Baltimore, MD they have closed one of the main streets that I used to use everyday to get around for about a year now and the road is still closed. Worse of all, they haven't even got started on fixing the road despite the fact that the road has been closed for a year! At this rate, a simple repayment of a few yards of the road would probably take two years or more! That's America for ya!
@@grandwonder5858 I certainly do not want our tall buildings to be constructed in 3 weeks. That's very suspicious and I recommend you look into the infrastructure issues these quick buildings are having. The one in Florida that collapsed recently was a very rare incident that made international headlines. This stuff happens all the time in China, there is a risk with poorly constructed buildings that substituted safety for speed.

About the drain 1 make sure your have a proper and working u-ban as you mentioned in the video; 2 when you turn on your kitchen ventilator, or when it's windy outside, the air pressure in room are lower, and this leads to the are in the drain comes out. What you could do: open windows, or reduce the time that you use kitchen ventilator, or just fill a plastic bag with water and cover the drain with it.

If China is so wonderful why doesn't it have a problem with immigration? We in the west are flooded by millions of people desperate to come here every year (lots of Chinese too) . Ask yourself the question: "Why do millions of people want go to the west to live but not very many people want to go to China to live"?
@@Nicofilms Check under the sink if you have a sink trap (U-bend). If there is one and you have a foul smell, it's because the waterseal is empty. This sometimes happens in older buildings where the water drainage is connected to the toilet drainage. If you live in a highrise building and waste comes down from a great height, it creates a vacuum in the drainage pipe which sucks the water out of the seal. Simply pour water down the drain to keep the waterseal filled.

To be honest, inftastructure in many Asian countries like Singapore, Japan, HK, China and taiwan makes some western world countries look like third world. Not to mention how safe it is to walk at night in many asian countries which impossible to do in many european cities like paris or rome, or many US cities. Chinese people may earn less but they enjoy facilities just like first world countries. In fact, USA is more of plutocracy than democracy. The rich people control everything including the government and many policies. The rich is so rich that they can touch the sky and the poor cant even make ends meet. Not to mention most of the worker live pay check by paycheck. One month of termination of work means game over for them. Yes, the west has more freedom, but many asian countries has also. and sometimes the freedom of the west is not what we want, it is so free to the level you can just mock everyone, blame, accuse. so free that you lose respect to elderly. so free that you think you are the best people in the world, the greatest nation on earth.
"The rich people control everything including the government and many policies."... this PERFECTLY applies to Communist China, indeed 😊And the HOLY difference between the ABUSIVE, AUTHORITARIAN Chinese Communist Regime and the FREE, DEMOCRATIC world, is that people of the latter are FREE to express their opinion and the RULE OF LAW protects that right, WHEREAS the Communist BULLIES who pretend to be governing China DO NOT accept people's opinions that go AGAINST their unified DELIRIUM... which was built to uphold the DISGUSTING mafia that the Chinese Communist Party REALLY IS!

Great video Nico and very informative. Thank you. I currently live in Nanjing and noticed a lot of familiar structures at the start. :-) I see a lot of comments already about the drains. We've revised sinks to have the U-shaped trap added, like you showed in the picture. Floor drains are more difficult as there is no easy access to the pipe below floor level. We've found a small rubber cap that we place over the drain to prevent the sewer odor from escaping into the bathroom. You can probably find them in Wal-Mart or a hardware store. I stayed in an old hotel once that had a very strong odor. Opening the windows only made it worse. A wet rag worked temporarily for an overnight stay.
In fact, in addition to these, there are many infrastructures that are not very visible, but the improvement in actual life experience is very, very large: 1. Tap water: My hometown is in a small county town in central China. When I was in elementary school, the city basically stopped water once or twice a month, but now it is stopped every two or three years, or it is caused by routine maintenance of pipelines and it only happens in some urban areas, and water charges are cheap. The blogger said that the problem of sewer pipes does exist in many old houses, and U-bend also exists in many countries. It is necessary to regularly clean up the dirt remaining in the pipes; 2. Electricity: Many countries have insufficient power supply. China has a vast territory and the cost of power transmission is very high. When I was a child, I often experienced power outages. However, after reaching junior high school, there were occasional power outages but very short periods of time. Students all hope that there will be a power outage for more than 30 minutes, because the power outage does not require self-study at night. Even remote mountainous areas are energized, and electricity is cheap; 3. Communication: Communication base stations are all over. In 2011, I went to university in Beijing. Because it was a new dormitory building, the signal was not covered. I found an operator. The next day, all three operators came to build their own optical fiber and to install indoor signal receivers. When you are in Europe, there is often no signal or the signal is very poor, and London will lose contact when entering the subway; 4. Environmental protection and public health: There are few scenes of garbage flying on the streets, even in my small county; public toilets are easier to find than any country I have visited; environmental protection investment has also greatly increased. As an example in my hometown, soil erosion was severe. By 2016, a total of 224.7 square kilometers of integrated water and soil erosion control was completed, with afforestation and greening of 186,000 acres and a forest coverage rate of 74.57%. My friend's factory produces building bricks. The investment in environmental protection transformation is more than 2 million yuan, accounting for almost half of the factory's income; 5. Medical care: China's public hospitals are divided into many grades. Basically, they are rated by specialized national departments based on indicators such as the number of beds, the number of medical staff, and medical facilities. The increase in the rating also means that they can get more resource support.Any emergency patient can be diagnosed and treated quickly, and many cases will be treated with priority. The environment of many public hospitals is indeed not as good as that of Western hospitals, but considering China’s population base, it is most important to obtain timely, effective and cheap medical care. Of course, many private hospitals have a better environment. And the improvement of the medical insurance system has greatly reduced the financial burden of patients. I have lived in the UK for 5 years. In contrast, the biggest feeling is efficiency. I went to the emergency department when I was sick in the UK. When the appointment was scheduled, the pain has been greatly alleviated, so many Chinese students studying abroad will prepare commonly used drugs. There is another cruelest example: In my first year in the UK, a Chinese student was knocked down by a bus that rushed onto the platform. The hospital in the city said that they were not able to receive it, so an helicopter from another city came to pick it up. She was sent to another large hospital for treatment. The whole process took 1 hour and 45 minutes. When she arrived at the hospital, the chinese student had already passed away. 6. Shared charging treasure (in fact, it is not really an infrastructure, but it does provide a lot of convenience): very convenient, you can borrow anywhere, and there is no problem in other places. Although this is also available in other countries, there are few places to borrow, and many of them need to be charged at a fixed location. Not even popular in Hong Kong, China. There are still many shared battery stations for electric vehicles. Although China is not perfect, it is constantly improving.
Yes china needs all the blessings now, a lot of countries are so jealous of china, even my country india, i am very sad about the fact that my country kisses US ass so much
The drain smelling is a universal problem. Here in Canada, even for my 6year new house has this problem too. There are some products like deodorants for smell drains, but not yet found any of them worked. What I'm doing now is just to pour warm-hot water in large volume with fragrant detergent once a while(a week or so), then put the stoppers tight when you are not using sinks.
@luxi: rubbish. suggest you use a cleanser after using the sink, at the end of a day. In any 6-year new house in Canada, even in 25-year old houses, where U-pipes and a vent are building code, there is no stink --- unless one leaves food particles at the top of the drain, without cleaning them out and rubbing a little powdered cleanser (i.e., "Comet"). I should know, having lived in 4 Canadian cities, and having family in many more. A little elbow grease is in order. Or, call a plumber. Neither option is hard to do.
One of the reasons the airlines are delayed often is due to a good amount of Chinese air space designated for the military use only. This creates tight flight corridors and is what causes the delays. Price wise the airlines are government ran and they set the price for how much flights are marked at. My references are from my host mom that works for China Eastern Airlines and an episode of wendover productions on TH-cam.
Nico, you're suppose to pour bleach into the drain regularly, particularly the kitchen sink and the toilets because wastes gets deposited in those two drains the most. It'll clear any congestion and kill the smell. I live in the US and been doing this for awhile.
Panadaren yeah imagine transporting 1 billion people by other modes of transportation. But efficiency of high speed train has significantly been reduced, 10 years ago when not many people can afford high speed train, station was large and spacious but now, traveling to primary station is a hassle. For example, once i was stuck in traffic outside beijing xi for almost 1 hour :o i wish they build high speed rail station underground and closer to the city center. Airport is so damn far as well. With exception of some, taxi will take 1 hour and metro even longer. For example Wuhan airport. Very nice but so damn far!

the stinky smell from the drain is maily due to the old drainage system, partcularly in the old city. However, there is a trick that may help by closing the sink lid and pouring a bit of water on the top of it that will seal the smell completely. Whenever you need to wash things, simply open the lid and close it afterwards. It may be a little tedious at first, but it may work🌝 good luck.
@@Nicofilms After lived in the apartment for 7 to 8 years ,we need to ask a plumber to do a cleaning on the U -shaped pipe. This is normal practice. So we don't complain about it.
regarding to the smell from the drain, you do need to have that u shaped tube to make sure there's always water in that u shaped area to stop the smell coming out. and there is also some cleaners in JD and taobao which is like a stick, you can put that stick into the drain and then open the tab to melt it, thus cleaning the drain. but you still need the u shape tube. the easiest way could be getting a long soft strecthable plastic tube, then you can make the u shape by yourself.

Extremism never be the option of Chinese people! But to the challenge, Chinese is never fear to face it!
So I always tell my western friends, Chinese can be your best friend or your worse enemy!
china is neither. It’s just an adversary.
Yes, China loves peace. When India first invaded China in the late 1950s, China stepped back and asked India to stop such behavior. But India recognizes that the Chinese government is weak. After another invasion of China. Finally, India was defeated in the 1962 Sino Indian War.

Awesome video as always Nico! I lived in Beijing since the 90s, and I have seen the days when Beijing only have 2 subway lines (1 and 2), and both were the...Soviet style but smaller and dustier. I have seen the days when you had to walk outside through a lane just to get from line 2 to line 13, I have seen the days when line 8, the one that takes you to the Bird's Nest, is terminated at Olympic Park in the middle of nowhere. And look at where the Beijing metro is now! Damn I miss it so much.
Wow that is so cool I bet it's amazing to see how it has developed so much.

There are a myriad real faces of China. Just one aspect, good or bad, is not the totality of China.
Thanks Nico for your great video ! Extra info for those interested :
For flights , too expensive , not necessary if no timing requests , less comfortable in seats , so people made their choices .
Thank you for the extra information!
Hi Nico,
I lived in China for 4 wonderful years with my Chinese wife.
We were in Shandong.
Absolutely jaw dropping, how quickly the construction industry will drop a 5 story building, only to put up a magnificent 32 story building.
Underground carparks of 3 levels, shopping of 3 levels, then all the rest apartment.
Great to watch the progress,
It probably took just 3 weeks to completely drop and remove the old building.
It's crazy isn't it and super interesting! Oh I haven't been to Shandong yet but hopefully I will get the chance too.

It really doesn't. Issues with infrastructure in China seem abundant.
One of the most information concentrated video, I like it even more when playing 2x speed.
The drains have a U-Bend. I assume you just live in an old build.

*Infrastructure in Asian big cities. In rural areas, smaller towns in my experience central/ western Europe or US infrastructure is more developed.
Thank you for the tips! Yes I used to live there haha
Love the angle how you show your life in China: can tell you are quite localised.
Thank you! I just try and show my life here :)
@Tom Goddard anything to do with this topic??
In fact, in addition to these, there are many infrastructures that are not very visible, but the improvement in actual life experience is very, very large:
1. Tap water: My hometown is in a small county town in central China. When I was in elementary school, the city basically stopped water once or twice a month, but now it is stopped every two or three years, or it is caused by routine maintenance of pipelines and it only happens in some urban areas, and water charges are cheap. The blogger said that the problem of sewer pipes does exist in many old houses, and U-bend also exists in many countries. It is necessary to regularly clean up the dirt remaining in the pipes;
2. Electricity: Many countries have insufficient power supply. China has a vast territory and the cost of power transmission is very high. When I was a child, I often experienced power outages. However, after reaching junior high school, there were occasional power outages but very short periods of time. Students all hope that there will be a power outage for more than 30 minutes, because the power outage does not require self-study at night. Even remote mountainous areas are energized, and electricity is cheap;
3. Communication: Communication base stations are all over. In 2011, I went to university in Beijing. Because it was a new dormitory building, the signal was not covered. I found an operator. The next day, all three operators came to build their own optical fiber and to install indoor signal receivers. When you are in Europe, there is often no signal or the signal is very poor, and London will lose contact when entering the subway;
4. Environmental protection and public health: There are few scenes of garbage flying on the streets, even in my small county; public toilets are easier to find than any country I have visited; environmental protection investment has also greatly increased. As an example in my hometown, soil erosion was severe. By 2016, a total of 224.7 square kilometers of integrated water and soil erosion control was completed, with afforestation and greening of 186,000 acres and a forest coverage rate of 74.57%. My friend's factory produces building bricks. The investment in environmental protection transformation is more than 2 million yuan, accounting for almost half of the factory's income;

Awesome thank you!
Thanks for the information that is super interesting!
there are some private owned airlines in china now like Juneyao Air, Spring airlines
That's pretty much the same as what I've heard. Thank you for sharing!
Nico, you're suppose to pour bleach into the drain regularly, particularly the kitchen sink and the toilets because wastes gets deposited in those two drains the most. It'll clear any congestion and kill the smell. I live in the US and been doing this for awhile.
I do but it doesn't seem to do anything. But I will keep trying some people mentioned some other remedies too.

We have large population, so we need more efficient traffic
yeah, nomatter how good the airline is it'll never be enough for so many people
Panadaren yeah imagine transporting 1 billion people by other modes of transportation.

Thank you!! I will try it!

regarding to the smell from the drain, you do need to have that u shaped tube to make sure there's always water in that u shaped area to stop the smell coming out. and there is also some cleaners in JD and taobao which is like a stick, you can put that stick into the drain and then open the tab to melt it, thus cleaning the drain. but you still need the u shape tube. the easiest way could be getting a long soft strecthable plastic tube, then you can make the u shape by yourself.
