  • On a nice day, people play ping pong at historic Hing Hay Park in the heart of the Chinatown-International District of Seattle.
New lights and lanterns have been hung, the place is beautiful and clean, and watching the ping pong ball bounce back and forth, it's easy to find yourself wondering, "What could go wrong in a place like this?"
The Chinatown-International District came to be in the late 1800s, when Chinese immigrants first came to work on railroads, and in lumber mills and in the fishing industry.
The Wing-Luke Museum says it's the only place in the continental U.S. where Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Vietnamese and African Americans settled together and built one neighborhood.
Through the decades it thrived and survived, a true gem in the heart of the Emerald City.

Great story. Our CID is a treasure. Yes there are problems, but not insurmountable. Heading down for Lunar New Year!

Best wish for Seattle's Chinatown is when the Lease to the 75 bed DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) Navigation Center on 12th & Weller expires and a non shelter business takes over.
Majority of the Drama in the Chinatown & Little Saigon Neighborhood, under I-5 and Bus Stops on 12th & Jackson & King Street comes from the patrons of that shelter. DESC is known as "Drug Enablers Shall Conquer" the neighborhood.
A shelter takes people in for the night, feed them, let them sleep & clean up. In the morning, fed breakfast then asked to leave. Where do people with no jobs and cars go? They hangout in the immediate neighborhood and cause Drama.
Remove the DESC Navigation Center and it will be a Safer and Low Drama neighborhood that people will visit more often.

Nah, the Seattle police have ALWAYS let the Chinatowns residents deal with open drug and crime, way before any municipality put some center there, nice try though.

I've lived in Seattle for nearly 7 year (in Capitol Hill). I've hardly ever been to the C-ID... unless I'm grabbing a snack between the lightrail and the Amtrak station. I don't really like a lot of Asian food (well, eastern/southeastern), so it never pops into my head. I'm going to make a point of visiting some places there this spring. I've been meaning to get to the Wing Luke Museum and I'm sure there are good snacks to be had. I love the thinking of the young woman who opened the salon... I hope they'll do a story on her place when it's 50 years old!

Weird how it turns out catch and release is stupid. 🤔

What are you even talking about? This is not a story about crime and homelessness. And yes, we hear this "you voted for this" crap ad nauseam. Give it a rest and let us enjoy something good about our city. Red Hat trolls are truly tiresome.

@@larryj1048 You said it! They love to hate on everything. I watched this and thought, "This is a lovely thing about our city." They must have watched a different video!

I'm glad to see Chinatown making a comeback. The last of the council members was a disaster for Chinatown and the rest of Downtown. I'll have to make a trip to the Honey Court
