Elgar - Organ Sonata, Op. 28

  • It seems curious that Elgar's output of works for the organ is so small considering that much of his formative musical experience was from the loft, first by deputizing for his father at St. George's Church and later succeeding him as organist. The few examples that exist do show Elgar to have a firm understanding of the instrument's potential, along with his own individuality and imagination stamped upon them. The Sonata in G could be termed an early work, although the composer was almost 40 at the time. Typical Elgarian melody is not as obvious as in other works, but it is well-crafted, concise, and imaginative; it leads one to wish that Elgar had produced more in that genre, especially after he had totally developed his musical character and idiom. (AllMusic)
First performed on 8 July 1895 for a convention of American organists in the English city of Worcester.
    I. Allegro maestoso 0:02
    II. Allegretto 9:36
    III. Andanto espressivo 14:13
    IV. Presto (comodo) 20:52
Organist : Thomas Murray, Newberry Memorial Organ at Yale University

Elgar at his best . This is of course my personal opinion but I find that the third movement is absolutely magical . Thankyou for this video.

    Allegro MAESTOSO.
Mr Murray's first movement is thrilling, but not majestic.
One prefers Herbert Sumsion or James Lancelot!

A piece that is performed much more times than it deserves. One of Elgar's lowest points, maybe except the third movement.
