      @@htx92 They did originate from Gotland and moved down to present day Ukraine, Poland, and Romania. Eventually settling in Gaul and Iberia. It’s true that they were eventually romanized. It’s why a lot of Spanish first and last names are from gothic. For instance Ramiro from Ranamir, Gome from Guma, Rodrigo from Roderic, Gonzalo from Gundisalv. Etc etc. They have other notable influences on Spanish culture but I don’t want to get into an essay about it.

      The Visigoths were not brutal to the Hispano Romans when they arrived in Hispania. They were extremely romanized and eventually converted to catholicism where they would make influential law codes that would solidly into Spanish law and later the laws of Western Europe and America.
      The only aspect of their brutality were towards each other since they had an elective monarchy that prompted nobles to fight one another over kingship.

    • @PUNCHY67
      @PUNCHY67 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PUNCHY67 Anytime. A lot of people misinterpret the goths as this uncivilized Germanic tribe that didn’t assimilate Latin ideals but they were the first Germanic tribe to settle inside Roman territory and became extremely latinized. A lot of Spanish first and last names are from gothic such as your last name Rodriguez.
      They dropped their gothic language in favor of Latin and didn’t force it onto the Hispano Romans. Within their law codes would come with a new cultural identity where they would use Hispanic to describe both the goths and the Hispano Romans.

    The Roman Empire is how we know anything about it ALL. It's hard to define everything about the populations of Spain, what all are and all of the different types, until the medieval periods. Vandal Haus before Al Andalus, but with an evolution in between before became Al Andalus.

    The Visigoths in their very long imigration historical trail from their original home place in the Swedish Baltic sea Island of Gottland on to Iberia suffered a great deal......but became many times victorious in the process.
    They made of Spain an independent Country.....free from the Roman Empire of which Iberia was just a Province.....
    HISPANIA GOTTORUM EST.....!!
    Spain is a Gothic Kingdom....which a Kingdom of Gothic roots it claims to be in present times.
    The Gothic presence is very evident in the features of the Spanish population ....there is always the blue eye blond amongst today's Spanish and Portuguese peoples to be seen.
    In the Spanish language too their Gothic influence is evident too.....
    Ya...meaning Oh yes....
    Ya..ya....meaning of course...
    Yo meaning I in Spanish...Jeh being the swedish word.....
    Etc,etc....though the Goths were already fluid in Latin by the time they got to Spain....
    Most Spanish surnames are Gothic in origen too....such as Fernandez....Rodriguez....Guzman....Capelan....Sande....kindelan....etc,etc..
    Christian names as Rodrigo....Gonzalo....Fernando...Rigoverto....Froilan....Gumersindo....Remigio....are Gothic too.
    In the Canary Islands people from the mainland are known as....LOS GODOS....THE GOTHS....
    As Spaniards in the Americas were known as.....VIENEN LOS GODOS....THE GOTHS ARE COMING....
    Please do not mistake the average features of the Spanish people with those of the Spanish gypsies which rule the GREAT FLAMENCO MUSICAL ART FORM.....These gypsies of Spain arrived in the Country from India in the 15th,Century a.d...thus their Hindustany looks.....while the Goths arrived in Spain in the 5th, Century a.d.
    The Spanish Autonomous Region of Asturias.....the old Kingdom of Asturias where the RECONQUISTA began.....holds practically the same flag as Sweden's.....Golden Cross on a Blue field.😮😊

    Wait what? The goths originally migrated to Aquitania not Iberia, they spreaded their kingdom from modern western southern France into modern Spain and Portugal. They were actually given the lands of Aquitania after they helped to defeat the huns, a battle in which they fought some of their own people, the taifals (genitacally close and they also settled with goths when they conquered Thrace, which were the taifals / goths in Attila's army) also on their side incorporated in their army and that also moved with them in Aquitania. The seat of the wisigothic kingdom was actually Tolosa (Toulouse) before the franks forced the wisigothic nobility to give up Aquitania. But many goths stayed in southern France or migrated to Britanny (northen western France), some into Iberia but they had already settled there. But most wisigoths were concentrated in modern southern France. And yes genetic studies point out that the goths originated from Sweden, more specifically from the islands of Gotland and Öland, hence the Goth name, which could have also formed the word Catalunya which was roman Septimania, called Gothia in the Carolingian Empire (which included Languedoc or a part of modern Occitania), and the Carolingian kings of Aquitania were called kings of the goths when kings of Francia were kings of the franks. The wisigoths formed and administrated Oc languages, or galo-roman vulgar latin which is occitan and catalan, but they also formed occitan and catalan populations. There's very slight genetical differences between the two, occitans and catalans also shared a common culture, language and history for a very long time, up to the 13th century. The county of Toulouse and most of Aquitania (southern France) should have became part of the kingdom of Arragon if not for the albigensian crusade. Raymond of Toulouse was the vassal of Arragon, married his heir daughter to the king and the kingdom of Arragon had lands in Provence, they were almost the same entity.

    • @occulte2501
      @occulte2501 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mili6580 Haha, I mean the most modern accurate term would be meridionals, but it can be argued because of the March of Spain. The county of Barcelona was what was referred as Spain in the Carolingian empire, differanciated from Navarre and from the rest of the iberian peninsula under muslim rule. And the term of Spain (Hispania) was sometimes used to refer to all of the trans-pyrenean counties (Toulouse, Gascony, Septimany, Barcelona). And I mean we've been called everything through history, catalans (untill the XXth century), lemosines, tolosans, provencals to refer to all of us, no specific region to describe us, because of the language we share, so they used the most popular terms to talk about the Oc language at the time. You can also read things like "those parts of Spain" or "of Hispania" in the XIXth - XXth, mostly by disdain, because of antisemetism etc. If we talk about regions and if Spain ends were the borders of France begins than we're french and catalans are spanish on a map, but if we talk ethnically in the XIXth century for exemple a third of Barcelona was occitans that migrated (southern-french) and there's never been a clear difference, we have the same genome. I even have catalan blood even though my ancestors never moved from my area, because catalans and occitans have always moved between the two regions. I mean you have a lot of hungarians linguistically and ethnically in Serbia etc. (in eastern Europe) because of past borders. There's occitans in Italy, in Spain ... (You also have a lot of spanish in southern France since WW2). If we talk about language or ethnicity there's no border between catalans and occitans... (If we talk about what's thought of as native populations). So it's always tricky the terms we use!

      @thebrocialist8300 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nonsense. I’d like to see the evidence of your peasant surnamed family having any direct/indirect connection to the Astur-Leonese dynasty. My surname (de Acuña) has an infinitely more established link to the founding nobility of Spain and Portugal and our ties to the Casa Real de Asturias y Leon (via the house of Silva) traces back to King Froila I.
      A name like ‘Rios’ was/is so prolific that there’s no concrete way to tether it to a single noble house (and even if the name connected to dozen lines of titled nobility, it’s still highly unlikely that you descend from any of them). It’s far more likely that you descend from a converso or Morisco patrilineal ancestor - as they were known to appropriate surnames of your sort. (A simple DNA test could help to rule out this possibility.)
