      the 70's stuff was the last to use desecrate transistors after that its all IC's, 70's and earlier is so much nicer to work on.

    Good work. Why is it that most cap failures seem to be 47uf. I've recapped so many machines over the years & this value is always is a failure point. I now replace as a matter of course.

    My greetings from Indonesia. I also have the same item, the problem is that the sound is hoarse and noisy at low volume or a quarter turn, and the transitionor is hot after using it for more than 10 minutes. Can you provide a solution to this problem? Thank You

    Nice repair. Why did all the capacitors run hot if only one was faulty? Are the replacements getting hot?

    • @Jayoldstuff1
      @Jayoldstuff1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think its down to lack of airflow. I ran the amp for a good few hours and it does get quite warm, but when i checked the capacitors weren't unduly hot. the mains TX and output transistors do get quite warm and as the case is small and has basically no ventilation the capacitors just slowly cook. I'm surprised more weren't out of speck.

      Is there a way to improve the airflow so it doesn't get too hot

      See if you can get a service manual 1st then check caps, voltages, and for dry joints.

    Hi Jay. Great video. I have arrived here via Furious drivings Spectrum Video. Could you have a look at a Sony mid 80's amp for me. or can you recommend anyone who can? I dabble in repairs of Sony Hi-fi but this one is eluding me. I'm in South East London, Kent borders

    It's an odd one this: caps that look nackered are fine, the good looking ones are bad and the whoomp sound on both channels is caused by a bad cap on one side?
    Well, repaired anyway. Well done.

      Always the way, the component you suspect the least turns out to be the fault.

    Great video Jay!! A friend of a friend (you know how these things go 😉) bought one not long ago and another friend of that friend has been in endless argument about the wattage of this piece of kit. North American based forums tends to say it’s a 8w class A, and the first two pages of the U.K. version service manual says it’s 30W, which I presume it must be of class AB. Would you be so kind and shed us some light? (Since you do have the original service manual😉). Thank you in advance!!

      @@williamsiu6291 Sorry its taken me so long to reply, Couldn't find the damn manual. anyway according to the manual its 30 watts into 8ohm load with both channels operating, so id take that as 15 Watt per channel. hope that helps.

      @@Jayoldstuff1 Thanks for your kind help! After auditioning I guess you’re right it around the 15watt area. We’ll probably use your video as a walk walkthrough and re-cap the whole thing and see if the worth as a long-term keeper. Thanks again for your help! Have a good one :)

      Helpful video. I just obtained one of these and the matching tuner. Very nice little system and the tuner is remarkably good for a budget offering. Happily both work fine, and I've learned through bitter experience not to recap unless necessary. It just begs problems, damaged pads and traces etc.
      So all I plan on doing is replacing the awful speaker connectors with proper binding posts and put LEDs in the tuner.
      The sound from this is really nice, if matched with easy to drive speakers.
