I’m loving this channel….please forgive the ignorance because I’ve only used quads but how in the world do you skate so far and fast without looking down for holes and pebbles and rocks that can instantly take you down? Is it that you’re just always expecting that you might take a fall at any moment? And then no pads or helmet, how does that work?😂😂😂lol.

02:42 - Coffee shop is called "Holy Water". In a LDS heavy population city that eschews drinking coffee, this is brilliant. Looks like so much fun. Just mind the nutty drivers.
What is your daily driver in terms of wheel size? I´ve seen in another video you use 90mm. I wonder if you normally use 90mm or go down to 80mm. I´ve only skated with 80 but 90 is faster to commute through NY. Thanks, great videos! Very inspirational. EDIT: sorry for bombing you with many questions. I´m pretty sure you use 90mm for urban, but do you use rocker when you go through the city? I would say no because you look for stability when you are surrounded by cars. I already ordered the PS Next, with the 243 80mm frame. I come from RollerBlade Twister 80, but for the Next I´m going to buy a 275 4x90mm blade. What I´m not sure right now is if flat or with rocker. I´m inclined to go for the flat, as I´m more urban than wizard skater (actually not much of a wizard lol) and in the future I might get a 275 rockered blade.
Ari, what's the durometer of the wheels you use for street skating? I just got my quads in last week and a set of 78A wheels (65x36mm, ABEC-9 bearings) to go with them since I'm anticipating rough seas on our ancient sidewalks and roads here. (They came with 85A 54x32mm ABEC-7.) It's been 40 years since I strapped on wheels...wish me luck! Joey made me smile with his "hands behind the back" stance even when he was just casually cruising...you can take the speed skater off of the track but you can't take the track stance out of the speed skater? :)
Fun fact, that “I’m Walking Here!!!” line from the Movie is Improvised because it’s real. The taxi driver truly did almost hit the actor and he screamed that and meant it. 🤣
I've been trying to figure out why he often does this move (at 1:02) even when there is obviously no obstacle he's trying to avoid. I mean I am nowhere nearly as competent as he is when it comes to street skating, and find that doing this move (never mind the reason) at high speed would cause me to spin and lose control. But still... perhaps I'm missing the point here. Can someone explain? Thanks
I do it because it’s fun. But in theory it’s a way to use edge work to generate speed in tight spaces where you wouldn’t have the necessary space to do a full push/stride.
Another great video. Question for the uninitiated: How is it that you are consistently faster (pretty much throughout the entirety of the video) than Joey, even though Joey has the speed skates on and you are just wearing regular skates?
1. Because they're not racing; Joey has no reason to "beat" Ari, 2. Because Ari's holding the camera, so he's positioning himself in front (taking the lead) so that Joey will be in the shot, and 2. Because Ari's pushing more often than Joey, it's probably pure habit due to dodging traffic in NYC. Joey's just pushing now and then and letting the wheels and his aerodynamic stance do the work.
@ShnayerRoth@@carriebartkowiak 4. Joey is a speed skater first & foremost. Ari is a hockey player turned urban skater. They have two completely different styles which is why Ari can jump, twist, and slide in a much fancier way than Mantia, to whom is instead way faster (since bigger wheels but his speed cap is terrain depending because of his skill limitations within that kind of urban environment quite unlike Ari's extensive experience with that type of skating) + is hyper-efficient with his strokes, largely since Mantia has mostly only trained on smooth surfaces without obstacles & for the purpose of racing over significant distances. Hence why Ari does that open-hip stride so frequently, in almost an aggressive way, right in front of Joey, as well as poking fun at his inability to be fancy in other ways, specifically because he knows that, despite his Olympic status, he cannot do those kinds of hockey style strides, jumps, slides. All amongst the other examples of differences between the two, when competing between what each can't do.
