I'm sorely surprised you didn't mention the original novel. I remember an interview with Jeff Bridges on why he took the part; his comment was that at first he didn't see the point in making a remake, so the Coen Bros. had him read the original novel and Jeff noted that the tone of the novel was entirely different from the John Wayne adaptation and as he put it "it reads like a Coen Bros. script". I read the first couple of chapters and I gotta' say the Coen Bros' version is a lot closer to the tone of the book than the John Wayne version. John Wayne's version was probably as close as a traditional Hollywood western could get to the source material while still having the Hollywood vibe, but the Coen Bros. version feels like a direct, unfiltered adaption.

Remakes are fine if they change a lot of an original that might have not been that good to begin with and they span generations. The problem with remakes today is there are SO FUCKING MANY because all the writers have been fired in Hollywood.

Last night my wife and and I watched the "True Grit" remake by the Cohen brothers, starring some of my favorite contemporary actors, Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, and we were bowled over, most particularly by the performance of Halee Steinfeld, who portrays Mattie Ross, a 14- year old girl out to avenge her father's death. How that young woman didn't win an Oscar for that performance is beyond me. Now, I do so like John Wayne as a tough cowboy character, but this remake had such an air of authenticity that it blows the original out of the water. The closing scenes are particularly poignant, especially as tough little Mattie shows emotion for the first time when they have to put down "little Blacky". Hard to decide which character best wore the attribute of "true grit", Rooster Cogburn, Mattie or her pony! My vote is for Mattie.

Awesome as always! Hailee Steinfeld was such a surprise. She would have easily stolen the movie (IMHO) if it wasn't for Jeff, The Dude, Bridges - who is impossible to beat. Awesome casting all around and fantastic direction. Surprisingly original performances by Matt Damon and Barry Pepper (Ned Pepper, coincidence or in-joke?). Love the Coen's work! The original is a bit hard to get into because of the old Hollywood vibe and the pacing. But watching Robert Duvall in anything is (IMHO) already a pleasure. Love the side-by-side comparison! Great stuff!

The Coen brothers were responding to Charles Portis‘s fantastic book, and say they hadn’t seen the original since its original run in 1969.
I love both versions. The original was one of the first “grown-up“ movies that I saw that really stuck with me. I’ve watched it since and own a copy.
But in my opinion, the Coen brothers version is closer to the book.

I don't think True Grit is technically a remake, it just happens to be based on the same novel than the original. Not every movie based on the life of Jesus is a remake of another movie, they are all based on the new testament.

This was my first time at your site and l'm impressed. You gave a balanced, well reasoned opinion that l agree with for l am also a fan of both TGs
The majority of comments about the films are divided into two catagories, those that can't separate Wayne's films from his personal politics and those who can't accept the remake of a classic Duke film.
I wholeheartedly agree about your take on the Coen brothers and their affection and respect for the common man Nothing illustrates that better than
    O Brother Where Art Thou.
I showed it to my parents who were in their 80s and grew up in the Depression and they loved it.
I checked out your critics list and was happy to find some of my favorites listed, including Le Samourai and several Kurosawa films.
I would be interested on your view of The Killers, Paths Of Glory , Kiss Me Deadly, plus Kurosawa's Stray Dog and The Bad Sleep Well.

Honestly one of the few remakes that I can say I actually enjoyed more that the original. Now do not get me wrong. I love the original and John Wayne is a hero to me. But I enjoy the remake more because the performances all around in the remake are honestly better than the original. And the main reason is that it honestly follows the original source material better as well. And as someone who loves it when hollywood actually manages to do a decent job of adapting a book into a movie that is one hell of an important thing to me.

The new movie is much grittier and makes us feel like it actually happened in ways that the more classic Western genre didn’t have. It’s not about how cool and badass these guys on horseback were- it’s about how brutal their lives could be in addition to how brutal the aftermath of men shooting each other in a chaotic landscape of a supposedly “civilized” society was to the vulnerable people it left behind. All bravado is paid for dearly, even if it is acts of heroism (the final shootout badassery only lasts for a small fraction of the movie and immediately turns dark and terrifying).

One thing about the dialogue of this film, a large majority of it is lifted verbatim from the book with absolutely zero changes (the intro, the negotiation with Stillburn, Cogburn's court testimony, and Mattie's introduction to Labeouf are just a few of the scene's where the dialogue is an exact recreation of Charles Portis' novel) . This film isn't so much a redo of the John Wayne version, rather it is an updated and more true to to form adaptation of the original source material.

Thank you - I have learned something new :) I loved the original when it came out and still do. There is no one that can really equal John Wayne as an actor. I know that sounds odd - but if you research him you'll find many hidden depths in his acting. He cared deeply about his fans and knew that they came out to see him because they loved John Wayne and not Marion Morrison. So he gave them John Wayne even though he really wanted to do other characters. Sorry - I didn't mean to go on about JW. I've seen the Coen's True Grit and enjoyed it immensely the first time, but now I think I need to watch it again ;)

If it was a straight up remake of the original film wouldn't they have followed the themes of that film instead of throwing most of it into the trash and following more themes of the book? I mean honestly the two films couldn't be more different if your a western fan, from costume design and firearms to dialog, they aren't really even comparable

Its little wonder Bridges hasn't done anything special for years.Rooster is meant to be a heavy drinker, and bridges just played himself for those parts.I highly recommend you watch the remake of True Grit

This one was more from the perspective of a terrified but tough young girl who knows when to be careful. I know Kim Darby was iconic for the time, but comparatively, I found her annoying. Steinfeld is more realistic- when she speaks up she is indignant from grief and a deeply determined sense that she won’t be brushed aside because she is a young girl. But she knows (especially after her father’s brutal murder) that she needs help and expertise to track down this killer. She listens to the men she hires when they plan and learns from their methods as she works with them. She’s not their sidekick- she’s an eyewitness and an actor in the story (although at times terrified and just trying to stay safe to fight another day).

Maybe with all the years of my life having passed by while watching John Wayne movies and others of that time period, I can’t accept a lesser version of Rooster Cogburn. I waited to hear you mention the code of the west. That decided the behavior of men out west. I don’t believe that the Coen Brothers can get past that. You said some of the emotions facing the Marshall as he rode with the two of them in the first picture. I say you missed an obvious one. He was a daily drinker. I don’t know that he was shown more under the influence then not in the first part of the film. When he left town, he was still drinking until he ran out on the trail. The Texas ranger showed him no respect because of this behavior. Without whiskey, he was forced to sober up and face every harsh reality. He could do it. He felt he had to prove himself to them both. You hear their reaction when he faces off against the gang in the meadow. He told Mattie a story about the way he behaved as a younger lawman. When you hear him speak to Ned Pepper and his gang, you can hear the lawman he is trying to do what Judge Parker wants. Unfortunately Ned insults his personal honor and reputation in front of others. In an instant, he changes. Death charges forward fearless is his determination to achieve his brand of justice. He did kill a lot of those he was sent to bring in. I say, in the movie, he showed us that you had to be just as tough as the outlaws to survive and do your job. Judge Parker suspected him of that. This may not match the original story. But it’s what America accepted. He won an award I think because of everything else added together about the picture. The locations used, Cinematography, the great musical score, the supporting cast, and their great director. He struggled physically get through the movie. We were all running out of time back then. If you live in these years now, you won’t mind the second version. Movies capture moments in time. The early west was a rough and brutal place. Both pictures let you see that.

If you read the book and get to Lucky Ned's appearance and description and first dialogue, it's impossible not to visualize Barry Pepper's performance. He and that character were meant for each other!

Great video as always. I personally like the remake more. Both of them are great movies, but as you say the remake made all the characters more realistic and grounded. John Wayne's Rooster is...well, it's John Wayne playing John Wayne. It also helps that the first time I saw this movie was playing poker with a group of my oldest friends with a bottle of whiskey on the table and cap gun revolvers to shoot at people we accused of cheating (or just for shits and giggles). Huge respect for both movies, and for all your work on this channel!

It is the attention to the novel by Charles Portis that makes both films so good. Very little deviation from the story in the book. The Coen Brothers do a better job , have a better cast , especially the three principal characters. The Portis novel still has the narrative of the screen versions beat.

Not bad but I wish you had mentioned the book. The Cohens used parts of the book that weren’t in the original movie. One example is Matt Damon leaving the party.
Notably however, some parts from the remake are not in the book or the John Wayne adaptation. Like the hanging man in the woods

I wish this video had focused a bit more on the source material. Both movies are fairly faithful to it, but I think the Coens do a better job of capturing the comedic tone of the novel and the essence of Mattie's character. And the Coens themselves have said they were trying to bring back in elements of the book that were lost in the original adaptation.

A sure way to start a dispute with a fool is to say nothing more than Wayne was delightful in a particular role or film, as he certainly is in "Grit" and "Man Who Shot Liberty Valence," playing Tom Doniphon, a humorous man with a bit of swagger who allows his heroism to be given to Jimmy Stewart, who goes on to become a powerful US Senator but comes home to celebrate his old friend when "Tom" passes. It's Homeric, and calls to mind great men in "The Iliad."

What is wrong with this review is the claim that the new movie is a remake. It is not. The Coen Brothers clearly said in their interview that the 2010 True Grit movie is an adaptation of the book.

Both TGs shared a brilliant source material, Chas Portis' best-selling novel of the early '60's. I'm surprised not to read how both movies reflect the cultural changes of pre- and post Y2K fin de siecle America. Ah, well --- they just don't make them like they used to.

The remake definitely carried the tone of the book throughout, in my opinion. As far as acting though, I can hardly bear to watch Kim Darby's breathless sincerity and Glen Campbells cringy delivery, both portrayals worthy of a good community theater play, but just ringing so terribly hollow on the big screen. As much as I love my memories of John Wayne, he still played John Wayne in every role. Hailee Steifeld was amazing to watch, in contrast. He performace was spot-on with the book. Matt Damon was posssibly miscast as Lebeouf, but it wouldn't have taken much for anyone to best Glen Campbell's sad attempt. Jeff Bridges though was just incredible. My favorite performance of his. Of course the Coens being the Coens, they had to please us with the odd, quirky background character. In this case, they brought us that awesome Bear Man. Unforgettable and the bringer of awesome memes.

Great review however I disagree that lucky Ned pepper cares about Maddie. He leaves her with Tom Chaney knowing he's a killer, and will probably kill her, Maddie says as much. He adds if Tom does he won't pay him. That kills two birds with stone, Ned will be rid of a problematic hostage, and he keeps Toms money. He even jokingly says Maddie was in excellent health last he saw her, when Rooster inquires her whereabouts. His grin as he says that reveals his intention.

I too, do not understand your reasoning to not even mention the beautifully written novel. I think it is so connected to both films, especially the Cohen brothers remake. It's at the very heart of both of the films, which is why to me it should have at least been talked about in a sentence or two. The writing in the novel echoes through so strong in the films, a blind man could see it.

I dont like to rain on a content makers parade needlessly...but approaching this subject as if the Coen brothers were trying to remake the John Wayne film is disingenuous. There was no intent to remake the original, but to re-adapt the novel that the John Wayne film was based on. Otherwise, the more light hearted upbeat tone of the original wouldve been kept

The older mattie ross dont like anything like 14 yr old mattie. Thats probably the one thing i didnt like about true grit.
69 true grit is like one more western with john wayne, he had done many a dozen movies like rio bravo and then there was very theatre like acting by all involved, as if they memorised it few times before saying it . One more thing which goes agaisnt the old true grit was that segio leone and carbucci, django, trinity , spaghetti western were in vogue, people like john wayne becoz he is the duke. Or like gene hackman says in ungorgiven movie, english bob is a duck .
the recent true grit in this modern fast paced super hero excess cgi excess movies, cohen bros go old time and bring out class acting like copolla did with darculya.
