His memory is way off. Gregg didn’t try out for Poco after Duane died or for that matter ever. Gram was busy building the Burrito Brothers as early as July 68 too and never auditioned for Poco. Gram had just left The Byrds and wanted his own band. Why would he audition for any band after having been in one of the biggest bands of the time? Give me a break Messina acts like he didn’t know who was in the Flying Butrito Brothers. That’s rich.

Fellas. In 1967, Gregg and Duane had moved to LA and had a contract with Liberty Records. The band was called Hourglass. They were known for fantastic live shows but Liberty wouldn't let them play very often and forced them to record selected covers only. That was the year Duane took the group to Muscle Shoals FAME Studios (Rick Hall producer) and recorded what they liked to play, the incredible "BB King Medley". They brought it back to Liberty and the label just couldn't relate. So Duane up and quit and went back south to be a sessions player at FAME. Gregg was stuck in LA and forced to fulfill the group's contract. He'd been rooming with Jackson Browne and wrote Ain't My Cross To Bear in those times. After FAME, Duane began searching for his band, each player needed to be better at their instrument than he was at his. This resulted in Jaimoe, Berry, Butch, and Dickey. The final piece was Gregg. I never knew Gregg tried out for Poco in those times. I'm surprised how little you recall of those times.

@@artistsonrecord Plus Gram would not have had a Nudie suit before forming Flying Burrito Bros.

@@Peggy53 Gram actually did have a Nudie suit with sparkling submarines on it when he was in the International Submarine Band. Can't find a picture of it, but Pamela Des Barres mentions it. He gave a suit, maybe that one, to Jon Corneal after he played drums on Safe at Home. They're gorgeous creations.
