  • In this episode, I discuss a medication known as Ritalin (methylphenidate) and go over 3 things that you should know about it:
    1. Some common side effects that you can watch out like like a decrease in appetite or weight loss. You could experience anxiety (8%) or depression (4%) as well.
    2. I discuss a Black Box warning concerning dependence with methylphenidate.
    3. I go over some situations in which you would not be able to use methylphenidate (contraindications). One example is marked anxiety or agitation as Ritalin my increase these symptoms.
My book is now available! It discusses my experience with Bipolar Disorder.

Been on ritalin for 3 years for my adult adhd and despite the Rollercoaster journey to learning about handling it carefully, ritalin has drastically improved my life. Ofcourse like any other medicine, ritalin isn't for everyone nor should it be used carelessly yet like I learnt from DrugTalk, if you respect the drug and your body - both will help you otherwise they might work in ways that might endanger you as well.

Thankyou I was perscribed Ritalin at the age of 6 for 10 years at the time, and I gradually got psychosis over time. I had no clue what was going on and later found out how/what caused it
marijuana cured it strangely enough cus it can cause psychosis as well but I’ve never had any symptoms from it thankfully and it helps my adhd as well as a whole range of other things
I still have a hard time eating 8 years after stopping Ritalin
This shouldn’t be perscribed to kids, it’s quite criminal

I also have a question regarding glaucoma: could continuously experiencing increased pressure in the eyes (sometimes a single eye, sometimes both eyes) after taking Ritalin for a few weeks indicate an early stage of glaucoma, in the absence of abnormal intraocular pressure readings?

A small bit of info: I'm a 68-year-old male. I'm already on Welbutrin, Lamictal, and Trintillex. My "problem" is I can't seem to get motivated enough to do things (housekeeping, etc.) I was prescribed Ritalin today by my psychiatrist. I've not received the prescription yet, but after reading some of these comments, it's already scaring the crap out of me. My appetite comes and goes for now, but I'm not really interested in not eating. I'm also concerned about the addiction dependency this drug might give me.
She's starting me out on only 10 mg.

My only question. Is it common to not only lose your appetite, but for food to appear intolerably disgusting by any chance? Like for example, I used to like eggs, but on Ritalin, I can't even stand the smell, and I have to sit in another room. And because I don't have much of an appetite, forcing myself to eat just makes me feel sick. Other than that, it works really well. But as for these side effects..... Normal or could it just be something else ?

Don’t listen to these morons in the comments. Methylphenidate significantly helped lower my impulsivity and cravings for alcohol…that combined with a RX for Trazodone to help knock me out at night so I don’t use alcohol to get sleepy….I rarely drink anymore…just don’t have the craving. Ritalin is not an amphetamine it is a Phenethylamine derivative so it has less of a euphoric effect, and thus less abuse potential than Adderall. I’m didn’t start taking Ritalin/Trazodone until I was in my 30’s and it pains me to think how long I needlessly put myself through hell on a daily basis when these meds were readily available. I had to ask for them though. Go to your local behavioral health center, setup an appt. and let them know your situation. The methylphenidate feeds your brain the dopamine it needs so that it quits looking around for the nearest fix. That is how it helps with ADD, as well as impulsive tendencies towards substance abuse.

Less likely to abuse alcohol and street drugs if it's actually treating your symptoms. Will reduce impulsive behaviours if it's actually ADHD you have.

When I eat a good meal in the morning, I feel nothing and stable for the whole day, it’s amazing and helped me a lot. If you eat good, you might see a reduction in side effects, try it for yourself

adderall is way more toxic than Ritalin. You should consider Ritalin, Addy is like Ritty on steroids

    • @JB-qt3wo
      @JB-qt3wo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Adderall is Amphetamine. Ritalin is a phenethylamine derivative. They are both stimulants, but they work differently. Adderall directly causes release of dopamine as well as inhibits its re-uptake. However, Adderall decreases neuronal firing…a very key factor. This essentially means that although Adderall increases your alertness and focus while you’re on it, the decrease in neuronal firing makes the come down much worse and has long term effects on the brain. It has been scientifically proven that Adderall is significantly more neuro-toxic than Ritalin precisely for this reason. Ritalin only inhibits re-uptake, it does not cause release, thus it does not burn out the dopamine receptors, AND it actually INCREASES neuronal firing and neuronal activity. Studies have shown that Ritalin can actually assist in healing or re-developing the parts of brain that are affected by ADD. But…people just wanna get high, and they don’t wanna read the science. They just wanna take speed and get all their studying done in 10 mins so that they can jaxk off, play video games, and message stacy on snapchat.

I just started taking my Ritalin again after I stopped because I just didn't feel like it was important.
But now I'm taking it again and it's working very well. Too well though. I'm also shaking a lot rn and it gave me a bit of a panic feeling. But I know I have to take these to be better at school. It's just scary because I now my anxiety will be horrible again with this but I just have to push through. I can already tell my anxiety is going to go worse but it's alright.
