For the record they were definitely making a statement with this album. All the big metal bands were getting more radio friendly and accessible and they put out something really aggressive to show they were still thrash.
Well, Slayer were not happy w/ the record... it came at a difficult time - producer Rick Rubin was M.I.A. during the sessions... Dave Lombardo (drums) was out, replaced by Paul Bostaph... and they weren't sure if the new songs were any good. Still, the album went top 10 in the charts, but after that, Slayer's popularity crashed in the 90's - the punk covers record 'Undisputed attitude' and the next album 'Diabolus in musica' both failed commercially.
Undisputed Attitude is highly underrated. I like it quite alot. I think slayer fans hated it. The used slayer section at the record store was always full of that album back then.
@@nickanthony4979 I only really liked it for the song 'Gemini' on the end, which is a slept on gem. I'm not a big punk fan at all, but it was a good album to hear them covering some of their influences.
Paul Bostaph is the drummer here. I thought SLAYER was done when Dave left. I was blown away by this album. the opening song Killing Fields is what you should have hit first here. you want groove, that's the song. Bostaph is a beast and, imo, re energized the band.
213 is my favorite song on that album. Back in high school, I used to doodle the lyrics of that song, and I am surprised that I was never sent to the school counselor.
And Skeletons of Society.... That album in general is the one i will listen to with no skips. All the other albums, there is a skip or 2 in those for me.
If you want groove off some 80's slayer listen to POSTMORTEM off reign in blood. Also a really jammin song off divine intervention is 213. Mid paced song 👍
I keep saying this and I’ll say it again. Expendable Youth Trust me. Especially after the reaction to “Mandatory Suicide”, I can see Ryan just losing his mind and having the time of his life. The opening alone has the groove he was talking about here.
i respect that you guys know what tempo and pace of thrash you appreciate. but you also have to respect the fact that the filthy disgusting unmelodic speedy riffs are the heart and soul of thrash and its what we thrash heads love about thrash :)
The song Jihad is freaking crazy and my favorite from them. The lyrics are from the POV of a religious warrior so I dunno if you wanna touch it? But it's an incredible song and will give you chills
I really appreciate that you guys open up your minds to different genres. Every music channel should use these gentlemen as a standard. Much respect. P.S. Thank you for recognizing and respecting King Diamond. 😊
Killing Fields, 213 or the title track Divine Intervention off of this album would've definitely been more up your alley. But then again it's good that you guys don't just cherry pick the "safe" tracks.
If you want grove check out “Read between the lies” from South of Heaven or “ Threshold “ from God hates us all. You guys will love both. “Expandable Youth” about gang warfare or “Skeletons of society” are two others with groove. Both from Seasons. 213 from this album would’ve been a better selection for you guys
So glad you guys did one of my all time favorites! Bitter Peace is a must though! You'll love the intro... Stain of Mind will also be a cool experience for you. Keep it up! 🤘🏽
Please do the title track Divine Intervention. You will like it. This album is their best IMO. There's alot of tracks you will like.Dittohead is the most punk one
I love this song so much, for 28 years now. The speed, the riffs, the lyrics, the drumming, the guitar solos. Please listen to killing fields, the first song of the same album.
Keep digging into Slayer. It’s cathartic madness and intensity. I also want to get a vote in for Davidian - Machine Head and Replica - Fear Factory. I think they’d get a lot of love..
FAVE Slayer song!!! 🔥🔥🔥 I first heard this song on tape back in 94 when it came out from my friend Shawn. The tape was actually red. I was in 9th grade. At the time this was the FASTEST song id EVER heard! Him and i both tried singing along but could not do it! Lolllll. Those lyrics are fire in 1994 and still fire to this day...
Thank God you found Divine Intervention, the entire album is great. Killing Field, Divine Intervention, but 2:13 is probably the best. It has an unmistakably haunting grove at one point in the song. You'll know it
The thing to love about Slayer is that they are and have always been Slayer. You listen to songs off the 80s albums and they match right up with songs off their 90s albums. If you know you're about to hear a Slayer song you know you're about to be hit with a sledgehammer of thrash.
It's why Slayer is better than Metallica. Metallica had a mid life identity crisis and turned in a shitty rock band in the 90's only to just come back recently to what made them great to begin with. Slayer has just always been Slayer.
Most of us long time metal heads understand the groove within the fast, aggressive stuff that Slayer does…those whose minds are not used to this kid of speed usually aren’t able to understand or discern the groove and meter in much more aggressive metal. It just goes over their heads.
I’m screaming yes. This song is the reason I got the testicular fortitude to get a drum set and teach myself how to play. First Slayer album I ever held in my hands. It’s not Dave…it’s Paul. My favorite. This album fkn rules 🤘🏼
This band is just aggressive, man, they just grab you by the throat. Killer speed riffs, transitions, aggressive lyrics and I don’t know who this drummer is or how he keeps up with the speed of the guitars but he compliments them. It’s awesome. Wow!
I'd love to see you guys check out something from Diabolus en Musica. I think you guys would dig the change in style that they brought with that album. Lots of grooviness to it.
Man, I like your reactions, they take me back the moments when I first hear those songs and I'm also learning a lot about Rap. So, just wanted to make a list for you two guys to help you a little bit when picking up Slayer songs which, I think, you enjoy more. This was their first release w/o arguably the greatest thrash drummer of all time. Personally I was incredibly excited to hear Paul on this cd as Forbidden was in my personal 'The Other Big Four' along with Exodus, Testament and Death Angel.
I am waiting for you guys to react to some more of the lesser known stoner metal/desert rock stuff. I just recently started getting into the sun-genre a few years back, and I know you both seemed to dig Kyuss. I'd love to see what you guys think of groups like Red Fang, Truckfighters, All Them Witches, 1000Mods, The Sword, etc. Much love and keep on jamming! Also- Bear down. 🐻
This is the first Slayer album I heard so I have a soft spot for it. I wouldn’t say it’s their best album, but it has a very specific rough punk aspect that makes it stand out in their catalog.
This was also a direct reaction of the LA scene at the time. We had the riots in 1992, which was a result of course of the legal system not doing what it should have in the first place. It really felt like getting Paul in over a burned-out Dave had lit a fire up their arse, they were faster and more aggressive and it gave everything a new lease of life.
An okay album overall. World Painted Blood is my fave (2010) then of course the almighty Reign In Blood. Dittohead is certainly not for the unitiated 😅 A brutal aural assault.

Spot on, Dude!
My fav slayer album
I would have chosen "213" from this album....but really want to see your reaction to Skeletons of society from the Seasons Album
"213" would be much better choice. Best composition on this LP.

Skeletons or Spirit In Black. Amazing songs

My favorite song of all time
Love the entire Divine Intervention album and the drum opening on the first song "Killing Fields" is killer.
This song is even more relevant in 2022 than it was in 1994.
I've asked for Spirit In Black, for 3 years!!!!!
KILLING FIELDS off this album would have been right up yalls alley!
🔥🔥🔥SLAYER!!🔥🔥🔥
Came to the comments to say the same thing!
Amazing opener!!!!!
“Die By The Sword” or “At Dawn They Sleep” are both older Slayer songs that have what you like. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by either.
I think at dawn they sleep was my very first slayer. I didn't even know what it was I found some old mix tape my fragile little mind was warped
At dawn they sleep would be right up their alley. One of my favorite slayer songs too
At dawn they sleep and Jihad are my absolute favorites
Spill The Blood is the song they need
Crypts of Eternity
Should have went with "213" from this album. It's about Jeffery Dahmer. 213 was his apartment number.
Yeah, I don't get this guys. What are they doing?
If you want groove off some 80's slayer listen to POSTMORTEM off reign in blood.
Also a really jammin song off divine intervention is 213. Mid paced song 👍
Grooviest metal riff evvvvver!!!
Best Slayer's track
Yes 213 that's what I said.
postmortem is better than raining blood itself imo tho less iconic

Expendable Youth

Hallowed Point

To me this song is the best note-for-note & beat-for-beat song they ever made.
In 1994 the big metal bands not called Metallica were trying to write their "black album". Except Slayer. They were flipping the bird to the concept.
The drummer on this album is a guy named Paul Bostaph, who is also a phenomenal drummer - Dave Lombardo wasn't with the group at this time.

I'm surprised that you haven't done "War Ensemble" yet. I gotta think people are suggesting it.
That and Silent Scream. Both are killer songs and I think they’re both primed to hear them at this point.
