he was born in Minneapolis and his dad was the newspaper editor for the local Teamsters strike that shutdown the city. So his dad got thrown in the federal prison as being - I don't know - treason or communist or something. Yes Michael started out in music training in college - so he goes back to the root cause from ancient civilization. Very excellent research for sure.

Really????? Guess you haven't been paying attention.
      xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Then we have this from Micael Hudson speaking to Wolff directly on "Dialogue Works" in January of this year. ( two 90-minute joint interviews )
Michael Hudson: "Fortunately, I’ve written all about this in my book, Killing the Host. What is Capitalism? What we have today is not the capitalism that we had either When Richard and I went to school or in the 19th century, the kind of capitalism that everyone was talking about in the 19th century, both from Adam Smith and Ricardo through Marx and everyone else, was industrial capitalism.
The whole idea was that when they talked about capital, they were talking about industrial capital. They weren’t talking about land or rent, they weren’t talking about monopolies, they weren’t talking about finance. Discussed this in volume two three. But he ( Marx ) said, I don’t have to talk about rent and monopolies in finance. Industrial capitalism is going to get rid of that in order to become a low-cost economy and in order to compete with other economies."
Hudson had to repeat a variation of this in the second interview and why what exists is NOT CAPITALISM. Wolff offered no argument or challenge either time but seems to have suffered an immediate memory loss regarding this acknowledgment and went right back to his "It's (undefined ) capitalism's fault," which is downright embarrassing for him and his audience who claim that Hudson and Wolff "are their two favorite economists" which is not possible since their understanding of history and economics is in direct conflict on so many points. Hudson's experience and work in both areas expose Wolff as the "pretender" he is. ( This correction was repeated a third time in July. )
      xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
This interview also begins with the same explanation again.

      Words.
Without people willing to stand up to the direction our supposed "leaders" are taking us (down a long dark corridor), it's no different than any other speech, analysis, video, propaganda, or pamphlet.
Words, without action- the very reason the US will be surpassed by the growing strength of the Russian, Chinese, and in general eastern nations because they communicate amongst themselves instead of like the US which dominates.
This will have a irreversible and devastating effect on the whole of the US.
But few can understand the situation-
Which within a few years will be thrown into catastrophe from climate, social, economic, and environmental issues not yet seen in recent years or ever.

@@rdallas81 Absolutely correct. My husband and I are out on the streets of our area every weekend, attempting to get people to discuss the current situation and what to do about it in person, and they all treat us like crazy people. They wave us off, duck their heads down in fear and shame, and either stay silent or state that they don't discuss politics. Even law enforcement and politicians want nothing to do with real action. People are so afraid to speak about anything other than the weather, their vacations, and their profits. How did we reach a point at which openly discussing the state of our nation is taboo? I'm surprised that your comment is even still here.

Not sure why this guy seems to think it was two guys talking, when really it was basically Michael Hudson talking to himself for an hour and a half. Maybe the most insightful comment you had the entire time was a small laugh at his joke about Freud and sex. Other than that you just asked almost exactly the same questions as you did on one of your previous episodes with him. I really have no idea why he keeps coming on to your show, other than because he must realize you have a remedial understanding of his work and Capital.

I've been trying to understand economics the last couple years, and I really like Michael Hudsons work. Also reading David Graeber's Debt: The First 5,000 Years. And lots of marxist things showing so many holes in the mainstream economics/pro capitalism explanations of how an economy works. And one major theme I'm seeing in my reading, is that a lot of the foundations of economics are non-scientific Just-So Stories like what you'd see from a the bad kind of evolutionary biologist. And they're justified by cherry picking the occasions where they work on in favor of the theory and ignore all the situations where the explanations don't match reality.

I listen to every interview Michael does. While he always shares the same data and insights based on his research, this interview is far more digestible to the layman than the others he does from his home. Perhaps getting him out in the sun and sipping a Margarita is the key to expanding his wisdom to the masses

    • @user-zh1th8sz2l
      @user-zh1th8sz2l 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah I don't think so. I don't think this was any more digestible than any other talk he's given. But you like the margarita, because that's fun, right? I love margaritas, I like to party!
This country, and this society is absolute toast. Comments like yours just drive the point home all the more. What Michael Hudson mainly seems to do, god bless him, is push the idea of some world-changing debt cancellation, which I would predict would totally destroy society, and what's left of it's threadbare moral fabric of a society that was always doomed to choke on its own greed and unapologetic, almost unconscious lust for money and status and good times regardless of the cost, at every level of society. And I can't think of anyone less deserving of something like that than your typical American overextended, margarita-drinking, ravenous consumer. On principle you deserve to have your debts doubled, not relieved. So I don't know what the solution is, but it can't be that. Or at least I better get a heads up before this cancellation happens, so I can go take out a quarter million dollar loan the day before, and then get my 'debt' erased the next day. Then I'd be in a festive mood and down for some margaritas....
IMO he should focus more on the ills of a so-called rentier economy. That's a more righteous subject matter than giving a select group of people free houses, and depositing five or even six figure windfalls into their bank accounts because they can't pay their college loans either. Obviously that would be a completely unacceptable state of affairs, and totally disastrous for society and rightfully so.

It's a bit like forest fires. At some point we decided that forest fires were bad, so we started putting them all out immediately. The result was a build up of fuels in the forest, so that when a fire did get out of control it did far more damage than it would have otherwise. In the natural scheme of things, frequent small fires kept were what kept the system in balance. In the same way, when ancient monarchs engaged in regular debt forgiveness, it was like a small fire that restored some balance and limited the damage to just the lenders. However, once debt came to be seen as inviolable, the debt levels built up to such an extent that when a "financial fire" does eventually get out of control it not only damages, but destroys lenders and borrowers alike (with the largest lenders reaping the spoils of everyone else's tragedy). We need a return to the natural state of things, to regular debt write-offs to maintain the balance of the economy.
Highly recommend Michael's books *...and forgive them their debts* and *The Collapse of Antiquity*.

  • @musiqtee

Like Mr. Hudson, my conclusion is that we - the west, global north, OECD - are “stuck” from our own economic beliefs and practices.
That shouldn’t be a “political standpoint”, but rather a humble realization from available knowledge and our account of history.
My intellectual capacity being a fraction of Hudson’s doesn’t exclude me from this intuition - nor for anyone else. Societal honesty opens possibilities, while holding on to “what is” narrows any imaginary future. A very painful existential feedback loop.
If our current “system” can’t work for the majority of our own, for us - blaming “others” is a dangerous distraction. And yes, finance for few and debt for all at the level we have, are our own reality - created and allowed by us, in our own democracies.
Change that - “forgive us our debts…” - and we may change from within, not from the forces of outside power.
Not as a religious statement, just a practical one…🔥

Any wobble, to say nothing of collapse, at this point will show the folly of our ways as populism and totalitarianism try to hold things together.
