Howard Cosell..possibly the last sports broadcaster that actually gave a damn about someone or something other than himself. He took shit from no one, asked the hard questions, gave the hard answers, and I suspect he got that famous, not just for his manner of delivery, but for his ethics and strength of character. Many thanx to the poster of this video...

hitcharide1 I mean he did all that stuff because the only one he cared about was himself. But that actually made him a better broadcaster because he was able to focus where it mattered instead of following trends

Jonathan White ABC Sportsbeat revolutionized Sports Journalism on television, it was ahead of its time. Essentially ESPN's Outside the Line is copying this style.

Howard would shit his pants at the state of drugs in professional sports in the 2000s.

craig kleber Yeah right, what a well spoken gentleman, on the field don't think he talked that way, just imagine, he sacks a QB with vicious hit " may I help you up "

Unfortunately, this report did nothing to diminish cocaine use in the NFL for the rest of the decade. Hell, it probably got worse. Wasn't 1982 Lawrence Taylor's rookie year?

ChristianMcBrideTV yea but the idea that the games would be rigged because of it turned out to be nonsense

Could have been but it wasn't. Cosell was always over the top on everything. He was a legend in his own mind.

Back in the 80's I managed a Head Shop. About twice a week I would get a call asking me to stay late (After the store closed). That's when the Pro Athletes or others who were public figures would come and buy their stuff. I got a lot of free tickets for keeping it a secret.

I hope none of this effected the Vikings "Super" Bowl appearances! Oh, good for him to change his life around and help people in need, and The Purple People Eaters, I loved them, but like I said, after hearing this, I hope that there wasn't an outside source affecting the Vikes in the BIG games.

I doubt it had any effect on the outcome because those teams he played against also had some guys who were using. It was a leaguewide issue.

A terrific book that touches on some of this is entitled "Interference" by investigative reporter Dan Moldea.
To make the obvious point: when athletes get addicted to drugs, it's potentially easier for organized criminals to get a lever on them to shave. And if they do it once, that's all it takes, the wiseguys have them for good, once is enough for the lever to take hold. Classic extortion.

Drew Hunkins these athletes can get drugs without being offered them by the mafia lol. I’m pretty sure if some random guy you’ve never met comes up to you and offers you cocaine for a super cheap price you aren’t gonna say yes
