What angle would you recommend for the long bent gouge? I recently bought one and I think I completely ruined the bevel trying to sharpen it 🫣 the 7L/22
Maybe I missed it in the video as i did skip through a bit. Do you not have to use a dowel and abrasive papaeror smethingto remove any burr on the inside of the cutting edge?
I've have done this up 2,000 grit I get a roll over edge and tried stropping and a dowel rod still not sharp. I've got inexpensive to over 80 Dollars in different gouges once I dull them they just sit I can't find my way on them
@anna did you manage to remove the burr? Maybe if the edge feels right, but keeps rolling, you can try creating micro bevel at a higher angle, when you get to fine hone
@@Owieczkin I can try that. Sometimes I'd get a sharp spot so I'd try and get the burr off. It's the burr I really can't get off off my gouges. I can put a nice edge on a knife and change a bevel on a knife. I have one that's an 80 dollar swiss gouge. I've given away a few hook knives because I can't get them sharp. I have leather and auto wet dry sand paper tried it both ways. I have tried a few different dowels. I have compounds while and green
@@Wherethewindblows524 if the burr is the problem, here's what you can do: get a ceramic rod, or roll some sand paper on a pencil, and when you're done sharpening your gouge/spoon knife, make a few flat stropping passes on the inside of your tool. The point here is to flip the burr back and forth, until it's stropped away. If it's persistent, you can run the blade on a cork, and hopefully leave the burr inside the cut. Let me know if it works ;) Edit: use no less than 1000 grit for the inside of your tools, only some polishing action is needed there
I have had this problem for decades and a lot of time wasted flipping back and forth back and forth like the picture above. Then I saw the Nora Hall system where they use a special paste and felt wheel system. This system involves sharpening ONLY the outside bevel and the burr disappears after no more than 20 seconds sharpening. THERE IS NO NEEED TO POLISH THE INNER BEVEL. Without a doubt this is the best system for completing an edge. My grandson can sharpen a dozen gouges in 15 to 20 minutes. He is only 11 years old.
Very helpful. We appreciate all that you do to help us.

Thanks for your comment. No need to use dowel as we need to sharpen a chisel only outside
Wingeezer I just went over the video and you did not miss anything. they completely ignored the presence of the burr!
Thanks beavercraft

Did you try to strop the gouges on a leather strop?
