I've watched dozen's of videos on this bass. You're the first one I've seen using the vibrato and explaining that you have to work it a little harder to get anything with it. Very well done video. Thanks Stephen.
Hi Stephen, Just wanted to say a big thank you for these incredibly helpful videos. I was recently given a Squire Bass VI as a gift (lucky me!) but was having real problems setting it up correctly. It's a really interesting instrument, but it never sounded or felt quite right, especially higher up the neck. Based on your vids I ordered the Staytrem bridge and it's has made the difference. Labella roundwounds and a new nut also on the way. I've found the D'Addario Bass VI strings (.24-.84) sounding pretty good to me with the new bridge. Now to make music! I have a long way to go to reach your level but you've pushed me off in the right direction, so thanks again and best wishes.
Thanks for sharing your expertise Stephen, superbly informative, excellent advice and delivered with clarity. I bought the bass and the Staytrem and the Labella strings all at the same time after watching you. I think Squire or Fender should pay you for helping people get over the teething problems and to fall in love with their bass 6's. You really know your stuff, cheers man.
Normally I hate reviews where people just talk most of the time & don't play the thing a whole heap, but some great & really usefull tips in there, reeckon you saved a lot of people a load of time & hassle in trial & error thanks a lot mate - great review!
@UCQwxXlqRlQ6xPB0_El0Sgbg - Played mine today, first time. Did you make the intonation changes you discussed? Still play this beast? Love to hear some years later how it went as I love the sound of these things and also the ideas they promote.
Hi man, maybe you can help me. i'm trying to understand if the bass vi needs a bass guitar amp or ,if played on a guitar amp+guitar cab, they would stand the beating from the lows.
So what are the strings on these. It's not a baritone I guess if the low is an E? Looks cool no matter. Always wanted one since I first saw one back in day one!
Do you still have a stock pickups on it? I am thinking about changing my ones with something with little bit more bass and stronger output. What to put on it I have no idea? Suggestions?
i have one i use as a baritone (A to a) and i found the output on the stock pickups was kind of weak for me. with some creativity and improvisation regarding springs, i put in seymour duncan hot rails and it sounds great. much warmer tone now and i don't have to crank the gain on my amp as much.
Can anyone recommend the Squier Bass VI? The only thing holding me back from buying one is the price. It seems to cheap for an instrument that should cost around $1,200.00.
tried to watch this but the constant getting up and sitting back down, and sweeping that ratty hair out of the way was far too annoying..a pity, as I wanted to see your review
jimmy ernst Well that’s a pretty respectful thing to say to another individual. Totally necessary. You seem like a non-nitpicky and genuinely humble and a nice person.
You've probably given the BEST rundown of this instrument yet hahaha thanks for doing the video!
This is the most helpful review of the bass vi I have seen. Especially for anyone interested in using it as a bass. Thanks.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching.
Been looking at a few videos for a Bass VI since it interests me, really like how much detail you go into, great stuff

NOTE: The actual info about the Bridge starts at 13:36
those hofner 4-string basses are light and easy to play, affordable like the squier vibe as another option - great video!
I stumbled upon your vid after searching about Bass VI's on here. Great presentation, bud! Love the atmosphere to it, too!
13:30 thanks for the fix! Staytrem bridge replacement works great
Thanks for the video man! Very detailed and helpful! I'm gonna order my Bass VI this week
Thanks for the video, man. It was very helpful. I just ordered one of these, I can't wait to get it. Keep up the great work :)
EXCELLENT video!! Thanks for all of the information that you provided in this well-thought-out presentation. Cheers!
+Stephen Kilpatrick how do you tune an octave down ? What setting on snark or any tuner ?
Intonation doesn't matter for harmonics, the 12th fret harmonic will always be exactly an octave above the open string.
Very informative and well presented, cheers Steve.
Fantastic review. Planning to pick one up and have some fun with it.
have a question mister... in the page of straytrem they offer 7¼ inch or 9½ Inch, wich should I choose for the squier VI? thanks

I actually sold this Bass VI to a student. Big mistake. I miss this quirky beast.

Did you try tune that guitar to drop D tune? Is it ok? Thx for reply man .. you did a great demo

greatvanzinni Guitar players stuck on bass. You nailed it. I rem Phil Lesh playing one. First time I ever saw one.
Great job!
Thanks. You’re very kind.
so how do I tune it? if I'm playing in a band with a guitar who is in standard.. ?

that floating bridge can be replaced with a mustang one? (for guitar).
VERY COOL BASS ,I WOULD LIKE TO GET ONE
Thank you my good man for telling me that this is something i should not invest my money in
Unfortunately Staytrem will not ship this bridge to the US. Only for UK customers.
My saddles done have allen keys to make it higher.. I care more about the atrocious buzzing than intonation

***** Thanks, Stephen. Also, if you can only afford one GOOD Bass, would you recommend a Bass VI or a 4 string?
***** Thank you, Stephen!
+Stephen Kilpatrick how do I tune an octave down? What setting should I put on the tuner ?
i thought you were Steven Hyde
Ding ding ding ! How Many More Tmes !
Go to a nail shop and have "acrylic" put on your nails and they won't wear down. You just have to go in once a month...

What gauge strings would you suggest to put on this (out of the box). I'm not terribly comfortable filing the nut on my own.
thank you!
