Starting Hydroponic Tomatoes in the Dutch Bucket System

  • We started the hydroponic tomatoes in the dutch bucket system. They took about a month to be big enough. We have another batch that should be ready to go in the buckets in a few weeks. These were planted in a perlite/vermiculite growing medium and they get vine crop nutrients. After the tomatoes, I did a little walk around the greenhouse and showed a couple things. There is a quick time lapse of the green beans. Then we watched Dad move some wood, checked on the desktop NFT system, and I ended with some good news on the old John Deere snowmobile. Stay tuned for more tomatoes videos as they grow. They need a lot of care, but they are a good crop. Thanks for watching!

      From seeding to harvesting the first tomato was about 4 months, with the new lights it should be faster. We only grow one crop of tomatoes each year. We seed in January and pull the plants in October. This works best with our setup.

    Have you tried hydroten rocks in those systems? I use them in my cannabis system. Don’t know how they would work with your system? Would save money on buying new soil or whatever your using every time. Just a pain cleaning the rocks every time.

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen them, and know a lot of smaller growers like them. We've never used them, but I bet they'd work well with the plants we usually put in the grow bags, like broccoli. How do you clean them? I do like how they can be reused.

    • @oguzoguz4686
      @oguzoguz4686 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats what I was gonna ask. I use hydroten rocks. The most important part is the quality of the seeds and hydroponics nutrition. What kind of nutrition do you use? What mixes?

    • @byronrobinson8633
      @byronrobinson8633 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oguzoguz4686 if you are talking to me I use house and garden Aqua flakes. It’s a two part a and b. Really good for hydro. Then I use a little bit of advance nutrients. Like Sensizym, and big bud. Then I use Botanicare cal mag. Most major nutrient companies work all the Same. Like you said doesn’t matter how good your grow setup is or how good you grow or the nutrients you use if you don’t start off with good genetics.

    • @byronrobinson8633
      @byronrobinson8633 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oguzoguz4686 I’m not 100 percent sure because I don’t grow herbs but I don’t see why you can’t use the same nutrients, you would just mix up different ratios. I would think tomato’s would take stronger mixes then herbs. That question would be better for this families channel as that is their profession. Mine is cannabis. Good luck. It’s so fun and rewarding growing your own.

I think the light sources needs to be stronger to induce the tight bunched lettuce but that gets expensive as wattage increase. In my expereince, the lettuce taste was a little bit off. Glad to hear from you, Paul and I wish you all the same! I did ask her if we could try that awhile back and we agreed to try it in the high tunnel very soon this spring, rather than in the main greenhouse. We will have more tomatoes out there, and I will be able to compare the growth. We are planning on grape tomatoes, cherry and san marzano so far. I'm looking forward to the experiment because I know you have really good results with yours. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    You've inspired us to look at doing a hydroponic greenhouse on our farm. Was just curious how your experience has been working with crop king?

      That's great! It is has been a good income for our farm, and we have been busier since the pandemic. All experiences with Cropking has been positive. The staff is friendly and willing to help, and they have resources like growers school and their own greenhouses where they do trials.

    Hello! I was wondering why you chose to do the layering of substrates in your Dutch buckets? I work at Hudson Farm Club, and we have had clogging issues with using just the perlite so I am wondering if this will help decrease that. I also noticed you didn't strain out the dust from the perlite and vermiculite. Has that caused any issues in your system? Thanks!

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We find it helps with water retention...perolite does not hold any water...we don't have issues with clogging....never have...the bato bucket has a u drain in the bottom that prevents the medium from gong into the drain system. Same on dust never had a problem... hope that answers your question.

    Where can I purchase the aquaponic channels with the removable lids like the ones in your greenhouse? They are long runs...

      There is one of me at a hydroponic grower school a few years ago that went viral, might be that one.
