Thanks for sharing Steve, if I can add - The black oil Is known as spooge, it’s when a 2 stroke is running too rich, too cold or if the engine doesn’t get enough load. It’s incomplete combustion.

That's a good tip, because a trimmer doesn't get tipped over as much as a chainsaw. My trimmer muffler is quite a mess, but I don't really care. It's still running strong after 29 years. If I cleaned it up good, it would probably die tomorrow. I will flip it some time, but not today (nasty snow storm at the moment). Good stuff! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

There 𝕀𝕊 something wrong. They should 𝙉𝙊𝙏 blow oil out terribly like these new Stihl's unfortunately do. I've been brand loyal since the 80's and there old stuff 𝐃𝐈𝐃𝐍'𝐓 do that whatsoever. Like how they now have a home owner's line as well as the higher end commercial line which uses metal, like they all were ounce made yrs ago now. They've gotten cheap and don't want them to last forever so have to replace.

Also, could be from an engine that is tuned too rich. The unburnt fuel/oil will build up around the exhaust outlet. My ice auger will do that on a warm day on the lake. After 10 or so holes there's black goop dripping from the muffler. Wonder what folks would think if I turned an ice auger upside down on the lake and revved it up?

Because I grew up running two stroke engines in model aeroplanes i learned very early how to avoid flooding. But far to many guys don't understand that a couple of pulls at full choke is more about priming the engine. Depends a lot on the engine but some fire at full choke, some you need to back the choke off after a couple of pulls to avoid flooding. The manuals never explain this stuff very well though.
I've seen guys pull and pull on full choke ten plus times and it's over.
But you can't tell 'em. They will not listen if you tell them to back off the choke. Lol.

I recently bought a push mower that wouldn't start.i got to messing with it, oil was coming out of the muffler. The fellow I bought it from had turned it over the wrong way so I thought maybe that's why oil is coming out of the muffler. I looked in the gas tank & decided to put in fresh gas. When I dumped out the tank, to my surprise there was oil in the gas tank. I rinsed the tank with gas, cleaned the plug, finally got it started. It smoked for a long time, then quit smoking. The motors good. Why anybody would put oil in the gas tank I couldn't say. Maybe the best $10 I've spent in a while.

I'm gonna try that tomorrow!!!! I've got an Echo SRM 225 that has blown oil out of the muffler since I purchased it in 2019. It runs great, it just blows out oil. I've got the carb tuned right, 50:1 mix, but it's done that since I've had it. As a matter of fact, I've got other two stroke equipment including Echo, that doesn't blow out oil. It's just the SRM 225. I'm gonna try what you said maybe tomorrow. I'll let you know if it works.

Hi Steve, After looking at several videos, I saw yours. It has been blowing a lot of grey smoke and leaking oil on the deck. Yesterday It would not start at all. I cleaned the air filter and let it dry and thankfully it did start. I knew that I had put to much oil in, but on my mower it is difficult to see the amount in there. After watching your video I took more out . Now no more grey smoke and a small amt of oil on the deck. Thank you so much. How long does it take for the oil to stop collecting on the deck? This nurse is grateful since I don't have a truck to take it in.

Good one, Kids. Actually, that should be a monthly routine. Can't hurt.

Most of the time you do that when holding in left hand and you turn the machine on the side to do the edges in line form.

I agree with 99 percent of what you said except one part. That oil/fuel mixture that puddles on the bottom of the crankcase with be forced out and burned at full throttle because the air velocity will lift it to the transfer ports and burn it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm Not complaining, but (yeah, there's always a but) while your "30 days of questions" has been interesting, I'm ready to see you FIX something. That's why I started watching many months ago. I'm not sure whey, but I'm fascinated by small engine repair, and you're one of the best.

Would this be the same procedure for one of the 4 stroke gas/oil mix engines from Stihl? Love the content!
