  • Rajan and Sajan Mishra, renowned siblings and proponents of the khyal style of Indian classical music, received numerous accolades throughout their illustrious careers. They were honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2007, jointly awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998, received the Gandharwa National Award for 1994-1995, and were bestowed with the National Tansen Samman in 2011-2012.
Tragically, Rajan Mishra passed away on April 25, 2021, at St. Stephen's Hospital in New Delhi, succumbing to a heart attack.
Born and raised in Varanasi, Rajan (1951-2021) and Sajan (born 1956) Mishra received their initial musical tutelage from family members, including their grandfather's brother, Bade Ram Das Ji Mishra, their father, Hanuman Prasad Mishra, and their uncle, the sarangi virtuoso Gopal Prasad Mishra. They began performing while still in their teenage years and later relocated to Ramesh Nagar in Delhi in 1977.
The Mishra brothers hail from a distinguished 300-year-old lineage of khyal singing within the Banaras Gharana tradition. Over the years, they captivated audiences worldwide with their mesmerizing performances.
Their journey commenced when, as accountants in a modest shop, they showcased their talent in the presence of Satguru Jagjit Singh. Recognizing their exceptional abilities, the Satguru offered to double their wages in exchange for dedicating more time to vocal practice. Their inaugural international concert took place in Sri Lanka in 1978, paving the way for performances across the globe, including Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the USSR, Singapore, Qatar, Bangladesh, and Muscat.
