I grew up in northen Sweden. I like that Ray uses the survival techniques that we learn in school (and offcourse more advance things too that we dident learn) and pass this knowledge on. Sure he has a lot of tools, fishing bait, cabbins etc but this is more educational. If you compare it to when Bear Grylls did he´s show: Walking around throwing away hes winter cap in minus 30 loosing heat, trying to cross the ice at a flowing river, not using pine tree (wich is in abundance) to build your shelter and-build signal fire etc. Its entertaining and I like Bear, but its good to see the conventional way to do things. And its not like Bear diden´t cheat too. Going trough the ice and right afterwards find a cabbin, with skiis. Atleast Ray built hes own snowshoes. Respect.
Interesting. I recalled reading as a kid some history textbook reference that early 17th century explorers and fur traders in Canada learned from the Indians how to brew a pine-needle tea that was rich in Vitamin C to ward off scurvy during the Winter months but the reference did not say WHICH pine needles nor that some were toxic.
Think about he's just showing some survival techniques. Survival scenarios DO happen every now and then. I served as an Artic Army Ranger (done ie. the survival training mentioned in this video) in Sweden and it was fairly common to be sent out on S&R missions for tourists that had no real clue about how extreme the weather conditions can be in artic alpine terrain. Weather can change from sunny to snow storm in just a few minutes. If you go hiking, it is by all means possible to end up in a survival situation. Ie. northern Sweden is very sparsely populated. It can take days to reach a populated area, if you manage to get there that is (map+compass and know how to use it. BUT the high altitude mountain areas can be extremely hard to orient oneself in. There are no obvious spots to find and compare with on a map, it's just bare mountains all over. Even an expert will find it very hard, then you have to rely on pure bearing and move for a large road etc.). Oh, and forget about mobile phones. It's stupid to rely on that you will have any kind of coverage far out in the wild. Bring it, but don't expect it to work. About pine needles...all pine needles are toxic to some degree. But there's no real danger at all drinking pine needle tea. "Normal" pinetrees are without a doubt no threat what so ever. Another very simple thing to get nourishment from is cooking beard lichen (don't eat it raw = you will get sick. It must be prepared, won't bother about telling how since there are several ways). Taste and texture is horrible, but that doesn't matter in a survival situation.
yeah i think your right friend,i was trying to be funny wasnt a good joke though.. Ray mears is a top expert in bushcraft and survival . I take it back :)

"Extreme survival" is loosely over used these days. When you have a cabin with wood stove and have completely geared-up kits, with snowmobiles etc. You are not surviving. You are having good vacations.
aren't most types of pineneedles bad for liver? i know white pine can make a good drink for vitamins, but most will shut down your kidneys, i feel that should be mentions so people dont just try any old pineneedles and make themselves sick
the fishing part is pretty useless as survival advice. you absolutely won't just find an abandoned cabin with an auger and hook in it, anyone who has an auger, a metal hook, and bait, probably isnt in a life or death situation. getting through the ice is the hardest part.
The only thing wrong with this video is wasting time cutting the piece of paper with the axe. it is a worthless test because just about any sharp enough bit of steel will cut paper. test it on something that is a real test like a small tree.
This guy sucks, he has a crew, helicopter, snowmobile. Then he has all this gear, but shows him walking through the snow with nothing...must be nice flying in a shovel, hatches, sleeping bag. Where was his food? It took me 100lbs of gear to survive...lets see him pull that through the snow.
Jan Davies Exactly, that is why he should have to show it how it is, not act in front of a camera for 1hr showing how it isn't. Why do they spend half the show talking about a story that has no educational information. Lame show, I could learn 100x the information in the same time reading guidelines.
I love his style. No self-created drama, just matter-of-fact.

Thank you.... for all the *little things* you showed us... most know the big things👍
Best one yet! Great channel! Thank you.
Excellent video! I learn something new for every video like this that I watch.

Another nice video by Ray and his team. More of this to teach people something out of the Celebs rubbish culture we have at the moment.
thanks for your teaching, you are the best, keep it up
The women's voices singing the background is mesmerizing
+katanaburner / It sure is.
11:45 Swedish: "Vi skyller på att du blir nervös nu för kameran." English: "We blame it on that you are getting nervous in front of the camera." lol

Yeah, that didn't look safe at all, hehe. Cool, though.
I loved the episode, since I'm from northern Sweden myself. Thanks, uploader. :)

That's good, but when old Ray gets in a bind, he has a crew to back him up.
I'm pretty sure Ray would have no problem surviving with only a knife and some warm clothes for a week on his own.
very good videos, congratulations
This is great, the pine needle tea is very tasty
Add a little honey, lemon wedge and whiskey and you got a nice evening drink
@@ramencurry6672 Whisky is preferable to whiskey. The two are not made in the same way.

Famtastic man.

geography in the news rise up
thats one low flying jet
What's the music at 10:30? It's fantastic.
The uni brow confirms this is an educational video.
I want those mittens hes on so badly!!!
egg is good egg is nice
dont eat it once, eat it twice
I can't stand pike. It has a subtle taste that I can't get around. I would nom those fish if I had too but hopefully a big catfish takes the bait lol.
That is something I generally hate about all fact shows. 80% time is spent on drama and at best 20% time is useful and interesting information.
Whats that coat hes got on?
Just eating snow! How hard can it bee?
+kalle kula Snow takes a lot of work for your body to melt, depleting it's heat super fast. Bad idea tbh.
Where can I get that jacket?
I think the word you'll find you're looking for is 'pragmatic'
It gets painful enough in england at 15*C or 20*C.
I don't want to have to deal with -50*C.
what`s the nyckelhaarpa at 12:20 please?
Ray doesn't need money
Court martial for frost bite damn. I guess the US equivalent would be getting fat
So if you get stranded, be sure it's close to a wilderness cabin or a Walmart.
Well, yes, stranded nude in the Arctic Circle your chance of survival is nil.

westhoughton high school
Does anyone know the knife at 11:44?

This video is clear evidence that Ray Mears has sexual powers
True but a ignorant comment
doing what he is doing is illegal for us normal people in Sweden unless u know the land owner....
i was sad for the pikes :(
nothadnotbad; sorry dude, but I do NOT want to spend fifteen minutes of the episode watching Ray sweat and swear over dagnabbed bow drill.
He cud drink my juices if the need arose
The only thing wrong with this video is wasting time cutting the piece of paper with the axe. it is a worthless test because just about any sharp enough bit of steel will cut paper. test it on something that is a real test like a small tree.
Duude, you're not allowed to chop down living trees in sweden...
gogo unibrow!

His shows are for educational purposes. He isn't like bear grylls. Testing him self. That's not the purpose of these tv shows he does.

BTW do you live in Minnesota?
No, I'm from england.
