    Hello Mr TIM, I just want to ask what does negotiating exchanges of power in new historic-ism stands for ??

    • @Nancenotes
      @Nancenotes  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Hamza ca Studying Foucault, aren't you? History is all about exchanges of power: who is in control, how they establish and regulate that control, and who wants to be in control. New Historicism delves into the dialogue of it all, and credits all voices, not just those with the most power. By listening to the various discourses, we are better able to understand how those in power are retaining, using, and passing on that power through the give and take of their position. (I say "better understand," though complete understanding is impossible.) Power, according to Foucault, "circulates" though exchanges--a system that passes power around through material things, people, and trade. And all of the voices in the system are involved in that negotiation, so a study of that discourse is an examination of how power exchanges are negotiated.

    Hello. I like your video. I have a question. If I were to analyze a science fiction short story, can I look at the history of that science fiction short story itself. Meaning analyzing the signifying practices of the different characters to "decode" the context of the story. In other words, forget about real history and analyze the potential history of the future. Can I do that? I am writing an essay and need help with that. Thank you.

      @Nancenotes  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      gova pb Hey, interesting question! Although you aren't doing true historical criticism, you could absolutely apply a similar analysis and read the history of a context. This is often done by a fandom--through cosplay, cons, etc--and is an interesting historical phenomenon in itself! Look at the people who actually learn to speak Klingon! The complexity comes from the lack of source material. You may only have one book or film to go on. On the other hand, some sci-fi/fantasy worlds are pretty well developed, such as the world of Star Trek with its endless re-adaptations and fan groups. Also, you could look into the writer's own pre-writing; many authors work out much of the history or cultural context outside the world of the novel or film in order to more realistically portray that world. Look at the Lord of the Rings histories! Although the only "real" novels to come out of that world are Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, Tolkien wrote incredibly complex histories and languages of the world of Middle Earth. You could definitely get some interesting analyses out of such a study. I'm also fascinated by what such a study shows about the author and the fans. Good luck!

      No, TH-cam took down all its annotations which allowed for internal links a few years ago to encourage users to use their new features: cards and end screens. I guess they're fine features, but they unapologetically messed up all the connections in older videos.

    when he says the time in which they were written is he referring to the actual time (writing about holocaust during holocaust) it occurred or when it was written (writing about holocaust in todays day and age)

    In addition to requiring queer, feminist, and black approaches to history there needs to be disability, unwed, indigenous, Jewish, Elderly, birth order, and orphan criticism.

    To this might be added the New Medievalism. This has the added challenge of all those pre-print days, the ultra-literate studying the oral ages. What fun! Medievalists do seem to have more fun.

    Lol I keep getting a 12 yr old video lecture from a MIT professor auto playing & interrupting your Literary Criticism list. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 He is very…let’s just say “artsy” in his teaching & Lang expression. Comes off a little pompous, especially for MIT. 😅 (oof I said it 🤭😬)
    I don’t know why TH-cam didn’t auto play the whole playlist 🙃 So strange!! Stupid algorithms. Lol!
