Yesterday, one of the folks at the table I play in introduced us to an 'edgy' emo teen warlock who calls himself 'Lord Zed', and now I see this. I'm currently laughing like a lunatic.
In our game the weekend before this video dropped we got introduced to a new npc. Tommy Oliver, the tavern keeper at the local watering hole The Green Cloaked Ranger. I saw this video and sent it to my DM while crying with laughter.

First of: this is great and hilarious Second (mainly to please the algorithm): I just checked. Battle Smith's don't add their intelligence modifier to initiative rolls. That's war magic you are thinking of. Now that I think of it....its been awhile since we saw a war mage
I really should have seen this coming - with all the gadgets and abilities they use, power ranger builds more often than not are going to end up with some levels in artificer. there are a few rare exceptions but most will have artificer. Still, good build.
as amazing as his HP is, I feel like taking tough as the level 1 feat is overlooking a core part of the character. With eldritch adept for mask of many faces, you can disguise yourself as just a normal teen/high school teacher, and then, when the need arises, you can also use mask of many faces to appear to morph into a spandex man.
@@speeddevil4040 is this referring to the faceless from descent into avernus? cuz I love the faceless for any secretive hero, but he doesn't come with any kind of transformation, just a disguise kit and a costume. that's still going to take time to change in and out of instead of an action to cast a spell.
@@sigurdgram Yeah but the spell can be seen through, and phased through. for it to work you either have to use it in tandom with the background so you don't have to make checks. You could get cast off-armor to have it switch on and off. Or preferably, pull as spider-man and have your suit be under your clothes, and have a helmet/mask you carry around. Then flavor it as the emblem transforming you into the new form. I just don't see the point in wasting a feat on something that doesn't capture the concept that well. Yeah you do change your form instantly but, it's just an illusion and any clothes you wearing can still be felt. People can see through the spell with a investigation check and, also things like dispell magic or a creature who can just see through illusions will fuck your whole disguise. All in all i feel less tweaks are required to make the disguise work like it does in the show then to make the spell work. Plus with one your giving up a feat and the other a background feature which most people never even use. Lastly this build has you playing an artificer who get double prof in checks related to tools you are proficient in. So if you are made to make a check for what ever reason; You can have up to a +12 on any checks you make to keep you disguise. Which helps the fact the build has low wisdom. This would not work with the spell.
I never thought of using Enlarge on a SD, but that could be an awesome way to make MidgeMong from Bordlerlands 2. Just gotta play like a Halfling and keep Int at 13 for the multiclassing requirement
My only issue with that is that it's still only like ten feet tall. Zords are supposed to be at least huge if not bigger. I'd suggest polymorph myself; the artificer doesn't learn it, but warlocks do, and I think they're more in line with what a Power Ranger is.
there's a lot of flavors for how to do this. hell, if you have a feat at level one from variant human, custom lineage, or just the DM gives everybody level 1 feats, you can take eldritch adept to morph or henshin at will via mask of many faces, and be a paladin who most of the time looks like they're not wearing armor because of your invocation, and then turns into a karate bug man or spandex clad hero when you transform, while still just walking around in studded leather underneath (so that it's least noticeable from sound or anything)
If it was Tommy as the Green Ranger I'd say it's a tiny dip into Fighter for unarmed attack, Hexblade Warlock for most of his green with evil stuff, and sword bard to diversify his magic. I would absolutely maintain the suit is definitely armor and can be made a martial artist without Monk levels
@@randomim42 I also kind of like the idea of a Glamour Bard and Hexblade mix. Glamour Bard is a good thematic way of getting transformation and Tommy is pretty enthralling when he shows off.
Definitely a hexblade. His powers literally start off with a witch handing him some magic weapons that possess him, and she later reveals she's perfectly capable of revoking them. It's all right there in the name. Mask of Many Faces straight up gives you "it's morphin' time" at will too.
Since she's a cheerleader, gymnast, and musician, you could do Kimberley with mostly bard levels, especially because it lets her polymorph into a pterosaur (or get find greater steed with magical secrets) and later true polymorph into some dragon that's sufficiently analogous to the firebird and crane zords. She might also need to dip into something that gives her martial weapon proficiency for a better bow. Don't forget disguise self for that secret identity, and just remember: too much pink energy is dangerous!
How to build the sniper from team fortress 2, the bushman aussie assassin with a rifle in one hand and a jar of piss in the other. Goals: 1. Sniper: you're not a crazed gunman you're an assassin. As a graduate from the school of shooting people from very far away, you might want to invest heavily on your spot, reaction, precision and accuracy. 2. Bushman: living in the land down under means you are accustomed to nature trying to kill you. 3. Jarate: when it comes to improvise fighting, you bust out the ancient martial arts of throwing a jar of piss.
I’d say his Jarate would work as a reflavoured Faerie Fire. It makes the enemy take more damage (advantage on attack rolls against them) and reveals invisible enemies (“Is this...?! MON DIEU!!!”).

I feel like 600 dollars- no wait, that came out wrong. The Dragonzord is dope, would make for an interesting pact as a source of power... Uncle Iroh build, because he too has power in the form of a dragon.
I like it, this is definitely the "truest" option for a power ranger build. I actually just did a dungeon with some of my characters where they fought the power rangers, but it was more of a "spirit" build than a true attempt to give all the same abilities as the power rangers. That said, my personal plan to do the white ranger specifically was a paladin and checking with my DM to have his mount be a white tiger rather than a horse, maybe with a level in hexblade since he does have a talking sword. (note: this isn't a critique on Tulok's build, as I think it fits the exact abilities more precisely which is what he's going for.)
This really wants me to bring a character like this into a group, slip in some subtle references, and see how long it takes for the others to figure out I'm RPing a power ranger.

Power Rangers was the thing that got me into martial arts as a small child. After a decade and a half of consistent/formal classes, another decade of more informal practice/training solo or working out with others id learned/taught with, and a sprinkling of teaching experience within all that, im a proud 3rd degree black belt, ive made some lifelong friends, and have gained significant control over my anxiety issues especially as an adult, all thanks to the training and community. Power Rangers will always hold a special place in my heart as the spark that lit the flame. And im always glad to see it make its way into my other hobbies
So I heard Hasbro is workshopping books for Power Rangers, Transformers, and G.I. Joe. I came here vaguely hoping for "Tulok presents a sneak peak", but mostly I came here for "Tulok presents a 90's character I grew up with". Great build as always.
Oh if only we had the artificer class back in the day! Considering how the battle smith's steel defender has been re-flavored as a flying drone (Falcon) and a party wagon (Donatello), I'm now wondering if it can also be made into say...a TurboKat (SWAT Kats).
Interesting idea using Artificer. I would've multiclassed between Monk & Fighter for some Action Surge+Flurry of Blows action. Maybe some Paladin levels if I were doing the White Ranger specifically. But cool build none the less.

I full expected Armor of Shadows invocation for sweet Mage Armor power ups (which works thematically since the Ranger suits are gifted from an otherworldly being). Maybe even a little Bladesinger but the God has spoken.
Hexblade Warlock, pact of the blade reflavor your mage armor to a suit and your invocations to improvements (especially easy with things like improved pact weapon, and armor of shadows for infinite uses of mage armor HINT HINT HINT) in your ranger technology. Then your spells can be some special attacks, like perhaps eldritch blast is your blaster. Smites can be an extra powerful sword attack.
@@EricTheKartoonKing take the feat that lets you take a fighting style, get unarmed fighting. Put some of your stats into strength. It's not that optimal though cuz by then you will always be able to morph and get your weapon instantly (the perks of the grid, instant ranger weapon even though you just put on the suit)
So, for anyone looking for a generic Power Ranger build, rather than a Tommy build, because Tulok thankfully builds to exact character, the best I’ve come up with is a monk/blade lock build, taking the armor of shadows invocation as your suit and alleviating the heavy lean on WIS, so you can use CHA for your speeches and various weapon beams/special powers. It’s still leaning on 2 stats, kinda, but it does still leave room for a lot of versatility for you to make your own ranger personality and skill set.
The other Arty capstone would actually be in charcaters too. Ability to end attunement to stave off a killing blow. Multiple times in the series, a "killing blow" is really just them getting hit so hard it forces a demorph. Also Tommy is the literal god of Zord Sacrifice.
Okay honestly "Million Zord" is a BADASS name for a giant robot, preferably one that can shapeshift into other giant robots, and I am absolutely stealing this idea sometime

for custom lineage builds i read that not just a default skill you get but you do get dark vision. you get about 4 variable traits. as much as quite a few other races. as a lot of races do typically have a more full set of traits and features to give a full scope on their species. for traits perhaps choose anywhere from added feats, race traits already made, more skills, or class abilities that this unique race can get naturally on it's own. you can also get a tool, added language as well, or a background feature, spells that this race can naturally use. lots of options. its custom lineage you honestly could .
This really raises the question... is Rita Repulsa a Wizard, Sorcerer or Warlock? Hmm... well, all the monsters she keeps chucking at the rangers would SEEM to suggest a School of Conjuration Wizard, but do Wizards get a spell that lets them yeet their staff clear from the moon to the surface?
That weapon you forgot the name of in the beginning was a "blade blaster" I feel old remembering that lol. I don't remember any of his ranger outfits using if however. The flute, saba, the baracial staff and and the zero ranger sword had their own beamy attacks so maybe fire bolt or ray of cold would have worked too. Otherwise amazing video and thank you.
I think the blade blasters and the equivalent in later seasons are generally for the core team members while your 6th/ extra rangers usually had a more customized weapon that represented their powers better.
Damn he wasn't kidding with that monk level as a con. You don't even get to make your bonus action attack because you'll be using it on steel defender and you'll be doing way more damage with your sword. Being a Monk hurts you more than it helps... but it do be accurate. Can't imagine a power ranger without monk levels.

Hey Tulok! Karl Smallwood just did a deep dive into the power rangers and how they came to the west from Japan on his channel. I’d recommend the video almost as much as I always recommend yours!
My only issue with this is that the rangers don't make their own powers. It is however a much, MUCH stronger build than my own concept of three levels of different types of monk (kensei for Jason, drunken master for Zack, open hand for Trini, and then instead of monk, bard for Kim, and battle smith artificer for Billy so he can make the Rad Bug and use a polearm) and seventeen levels of undying warlock (their powers come from a magician trapped and unaffected by time, the various means of getting regular and mass polymorph are the Dinozords and later the Thunderzords, mass suggestion is how they run so many extracurriculars so easily, and the slow aging is how teenagers can be played by people in their mid 20s) by a long shot. I realise by Dino Thunder, Tommy's powers were actually more his own work to some extent though, so at least making him in particular an artificer actually works.
See, while I like this take, I've always had my own. Admittedly these were pre artificer but hey, Zordon says don't escalate fights so no zords. -Hexblade Warlock with Unarmed fighting - for your classic Green With Evil Tommy. Evil magical weapon granted by a witch being? Yeah, that's a hexblade. Use Armor of Shadows and you can even Morph at will. -Kensei or Open Palm Monk - The Power Ranger default for me, and perfect for standard Green Ranger Tommy as he only uses a dagger. -Celestial Blade Warlock - Zordon is a being of light, and this best represents the White Ranger. Flavor Saba as a Longsword or Scimitar, toss on armor of Shadows and go to town. You can even take Eldritch blast and either use it as the pistol or some Magical DnD equivalent. You might be wondering why less Wisdom builds. That's simple - Tommy regularly forgot his communicator - a WATCH - in his bag during the first season. If anything indicates a low wisdom it's that.
Tbh...I only watched Dino Thunder, but wouldn't Black Ranger Tommy with the Brachio Zord (which, I feel is selling short with just size large seeing as the thing is a Brachiosaurus) have more Wisdom and Intelligence? I feel like a guy with a degree in paleontology who has helped raised dinosaurs both from the dead and as a dad would have good Nature and Animal Handling checks
@@keithgawain3614 Intelligence yes, but I stand by low Wisdom, as Tommy has a history of failing Dominate Person checks - and you can argue being frozen in amber is one hell of a Hold Person. As for Black Ranger Tommy... I'll be honest, I still need to consider how to do that one. Assuming he can do everything his sentai counterpart can do in the armor, he's a pretty spell-y swordsman. I personally wouldn't include the Brachiozord though, as it's a carrier and glorified launch ramp aside from one fight.

A kamen rider could be an armorer, you can put armor with an action as the flashy transformation.

Another way is warlock with armour of shadows and mask of many faces (to suit up.) There's loads of ways to do toku in D&D.

So I heard Hasbro is workshopping books for Power Rangers, Transformers, and G.I. Joe. I came here vaguely hoping for "Tulok presents a sneak peak", but mostly I came here for "Tulok presents a 90's character I grew up with". Great build as always.

Oh if only we had the artificer class back in the day! Considering how the battle smith's steel defender has been re-flavored as a flying drone (Falcon) and a party wagon (Donatello), I'm now wondering if it can also be made into say...a TurboKat (SWAT Kats).
Interesting idea using Artificer. I would've multiclassed between Monk & Fighter for some Action Surge+Flurry of Blows action. Maybe some Paladin levels if I were doing the White Ranger specifically. But cool build none the less.

Heck yeah! I recommend this build years ago, so great to be seeing it now! Time to build a team of Over emotional adolescent humans and beat the forces of evil with our own Zords!
I full expected Armor of Shadows invocation for sweet Mage Armor power ups (which works thematically since the Ranger suits are gifted from an otherworldly being). Maybe even a little Bladesinger but the God has spoken.
Hexblade Warlock, pact of the blade
reflavor your mage armor to a suit and your invocations to improvements (especially easy with things like improved pact weapon, and armor of shadows for infinite uses of mage armor HINT HINT HINT) in your ranger technology.
Then your spells can be some special attacks, like perhaps eldritch blast is your blaster. Smites can be an extra powerful sword attack.
Damn that's pretty solid. Doesn't account for unarmed fighting though, guess you gotta pick one or the other.
@@EricTheKartoonKing take the feat that lets you take a fighting style, get unarmed fighting. Put some of your stats into strength.
It's not that optimal though cuz by then you will always be able to morph and get your weapon instantly (the perks of the grid, instant ranger weapon even though you just put on the suit)
So, for anyone looking for a generic Power Ranger build, rather than a Tommy build, because Tulok thankfully builds to exact character, the best I’ve come up with is a monk/blade lock build, taking the armor of shadows invocation as your suit and alleviating the heavy lean on WIS, so you can use CHA for your speeches and various weapon beams/special powers. It’s still leaning on 2 stats, kinda, but it does still leave room for a lot of versatility for you to make your own ranger personality and skill set.
The other Arty capstone would actually be in charcaters too. Ability to end attunement to stave off a killing blow. Multiple times in the series, a "killing blow" is really just them getting hit so hard it forces a demorph. Also Tommy is the literal god of Zord Sacrifice.

for custom lineage builds i read that not just a default skill you get but you do get dark vision. you get about 4 variable traits. as much as quite a few other races. as a lot of races do typically have a more full set of traits and features to give a full scope on their species. for traits perhaps choose anywhere from added feats, race traits already made, more skills, or class abilities that this unique race can get naturally on it's own. you can also get a tool, added language as well, or a background feature, spells that this race can naturally use. lots of options. its custom lineage you honestly could .

This really raises the question... is Rita Repulsa a Wizard, Sorcerer or Warlock? Hmm... well, all the monsters she keeps chucking at the rangers would SEEM to suggest a School of Conjuration Wizard, but do Wizards get a spell that lets them yeet their staff clear from the moon to the surface?
That weapon you forgot the name of in the beginning was a "blade blaster" I feel old remembering that lol. I don't remember any of his ranger outfits using if however. The flute, saba, the baracial staff and and the zero ranger sword had their own beamy attacks so maybe fire bolt or ray of cold would have worked too.

I think the blade blasters and the equivalent in later seasons are generally for the core team members while your 6th/ extra rangers usually had a more customized weapon that represented their powers better.
Damn he wasn't kidding with that monk level as a con. You don't even get to make your bonus action attack because you'll be using it on steel defender and you'll be doing way more damage with your sword. Being a Monk hurts you more than it helps... but it do be accurate. Can't imagine a power ranger without monk levels.

Yes the mecha build he promised in the Nezuko video, also yes, Tommy is the favorite ranger of everyone.
My only issue with this is that the rangers don't make their own powers. It is however a much, MUCH stronger build than my own concept of three levels of different types of monk (kensei for Jason, drunken master for Zack, open hand for Trini, and then instead of monk, bard for Kim, and battle smith artificer for Billy so he can make the Rad Bug and use a polearm) and seventeen levels of undying warlock (their powers come from a magician trapped and unaffected by time, the various means of getting regular and mass polymorph are the Dinozords and later the Thunderzords, mass suggestion is how they run so many extracurriculars so easily, and the slow aging is how teenagers can be played by people in their mid 20s) by a long shot.
I realise by Dino Thunder, Tommy's powers were actually more his own work to some extent though, so at least making him in particular an artificer actually works.
See, while I like this take, I've always had my own. Admittedly these were pre artificer but hey, Zordon says don't escalate fights so no zords.
-Hexblade Warlock with Unarmed fighting - for your classic Green With Evil Tommy. Evil magical weapon granted by a witch being? Yeah, that's a hexblade. Use Armor of Shadows and you can even Morph at will.
-Kensei or Open Palm Monk - The Power Ranger default for me, and perfect for standard Green Ranger Tommy as he only uses a dagger.
-Celestial Blade Warlock - Zordon is a being of light, and this best represents the White Ranger. Flavor Saba as a Longsword or Scimitar, toss on armor of Shadows and go to town. You can even take Eldritch blast and either use it as the pistol or some Magical DnD equivalent.
You might be wondering why less Wisdom builds. That's simple - Tommy regularly forgot his communicator - a WATCH - in his bag during the first season. If anything indicates a low wisdom it's that.
Tbh...I only watched Dino Thunder, but wouldn't Black Ranger Tommy with the Brachio Zord (which, I feel is selling short with just size large seeing as the thing is a Brachiosaurus) have more Wisdom and Intelligence? I feel like a guy with a degree in paleontology who has helped raised dinosaurs both from the dead and as a dad would have good Nature and Animal Handling checks
@@keithgawain3614 Intelligence yes, but I stand by low Wisdom, as Tommy has a history of failing Dominate Person checks - and you can argue being frozen in amber is one hell of a Hold Person. As for Black Ranger Tommy... I'll be honest, I still need to consider how to do that one. Assuming he can do everything his sentai counterpart can do in the armor, he's a pretty spell-y swordsman. I personally wouldn't include the Brachiozord though, as it's a carrier and glorified launch ramp aside from one fight.

Personally, my favorite Power Ranger has will always be Billy the Blue Ranger from MMPR, but my overall favorite series is Lightspeed Rescue.

my first thought was warlock genie hex blade, summon that sword, Zordon is your patron, at will mage armor is your ranger suit
With a few friends and the Spell storing item ability of the articifer. you could stack Enlarge/reduce and get a a nearly zord sized defender.
I imagine that it's impossible to make a companion robot any larger than size Large.
I still love artificer builds.
Could be a kamen rider ryuki build too, you have a contract monster that you can control.

Did you know there's a new d20 power rangers rpg coming out? It's designed with the same system as the upcoming Transformers and Gi Joe rpgs, so you might be able to have a wicked Hasbro crossover.
I mean technically all power rangers are just different flavors of warlocks

Concern was validated. Tommy literally had an evil sword at the start and was pretty much a warlock. This feels like what an average Power Ranger build.
I like that lorewise, a lot of the power ranger teams should be warlocks due to having a powerful being or item be the source of their power
