As a western Protestant I really appreciated this video and discourse! I know I’m more of the fringe/ outsider some might say, but i appreciated Rowan for sharing that we need to stand together on the foundational truth & the Rock that is God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit!! So many different people worship or practice these different but if there is a foundation of the real Truth in God we are not all so different!!

I enjoyed this stimulating discussion as a Roman Catholic priest. In pondering how we as Christians find unity in our diversity, we have only to look to the Bible itself to witness how God's community developed and diversified both regionally, theologically, and over time. I find helpful the late Catholic ecclesiologist Richard Gaillardetz' concept of the "eschatological character of truth." Our creed reminds us of the truth that saves us, but the Spirit, who blows where she will, is guiding us into deeper understanding and living out of that truth.

Your question about marriage and sex and where the boundaries of the Church belong, especially in the light of the culture wars, brought some very thoughtful responses. In my opinion, it is in the fallen human nature both to desire in a crooked way and to judge in hypocrisy others with such desires. The Royal Path, as I've heard it described by Fr. Seraphim Rose, is neither deviation to the left or the right, but walking a straight path with a heart. So, while there is no possiblility of redefining marriage or sanctifying fornication in order to conform to the world (and the sins of the flesh haven't changed in 2000 years either), and still being true to Church, there should be a great deal of co-suffering with those who struggle outside the communion and an awareness that we recieve to our condemnation if we are Pharisees in our hearts. In fact, to commune worthily is not really possible, but only by God's grace can we be made worthy, and nobody should be proud of their access to the holy mysteries. And as Fr. Williams says, the less said the better, since we aim to heal our brothers and sisters wounds, not to make a spectacle out of them.

Im a christian who cannot understand why none of the christian churches are not speaking out against this slaughter of the innocents in gaza. Im finding this very disturbing and points at the church being irrelevant. I think what would the holy father if he were alive today do. I dont believe he would be silent. With respect and best wishes to all.

I’m in the Antiochian jurisdiction and my parish has many Palestinians, including in the clergy. Our church has been speaking out, doing prayer services, and charitable collections for the victims. We have many catechumens and newly illumined this year (Glory to God) and our priest has been trying to educate us all on the problem of Christian Zionism, its history, how to recognize it, why it is heretical, etc. We’re just not going viral in the Orthodox spheres

I’ve been listening to your discussions on Israel & Palestine and feel compelled to share a different perspective. Evidence suggests that Hamas was the Frankenstein creation of Netanyahu and Zionist right-wing extremists to split the secular moderates and two-state cause of Fatah. This aspect is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
Regarding the relationship between Orthodox Christians and Muslims, there’s a substantial overlap in cultural and value exchange. This is particularly evident in regions like the North Caucasus. Acknowledging these similarities is important. Especially in a western climate clouded in scare tactics and misconceptions about jihad or our Muslim neighbors. The common-ground quotes from bishops and politicians should be understood in this light. I understood it as attempts to bridge gaps and I say this as a critic of Russian leadership like yourself.
On a related note, St. John of Damascus described Islam as an early Christian heresy in his magnum opus, The Fount of Knowledge. This view, proves the close ties and shared roots between our faiths, contrasting significantly with other religious traditions such as Rabbinical Judaism or its unfortunate seed: Protestant dispensationalism.

И кто забыл об этом или думает , что это прошлое, того руки в крови. Потому что у Бога нет прошлого .
Мы все должны носить черные ленты и повязывать их своим детям в память об этом

Sr Vassa, forgive me, but I was baffled by your exegesis of the Samaritan Woman by the Well. More so, I found your open-ended speculations and intimations regarding our Lord’s disposition towards the Samaritan Woman, as well as, her fate after her encounter with Him, all for the sake of an appeal to a softer stance on sexual immortality, deeply troubling. As an Orthodox layman, I am embarrassed to have to do this Sr Vassa, but you are a nun in the Orthodox Church and therefore you should show more discernment. Our Orthodox Tradition, recounts very clearly the life and martyrdom of the holy and glorious Great-martyr Photini of Samaria, Equal-to-the-Apostles. The Holy Church’s testimony and witness to her holy life and martyrdom is not an invite to rethinking the Church’s stance on sexual immorality. Therefore, let us show humility and obedience to our Lord by rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15) and holding fast to the traditions that we have been taught by the Holy Church of Christ (2 Thess 2:15). Glory to God for all things.

Dear "making smoke since 76", I don't know what your presumptions are about my "intimations." But you are misinformed about "our Orthodox Tradition" when it comes to the Samaritan Woman, because you assume it is recounted "very clearly." There is no traditioned hymnography to the Holy Martyr Photini in the liturgical Menaion, on either of her days, February 26 and March 20. The only hymnography to The Samaritan Woman is found in the Pentecostarion (or Paschal/Tsvetnaya Triodion), on the 5th Sunday of the Paschal period, and in that hymnography she is never named Photini. She is named Photini at the end of the Synaxarion, (which originates much later than the hymnography), and there it says that Christ gave her this name. In the hagiography of this saint, one reads that the Apostles gave her this name. As for her being called a "Great Martyr" and "Equal to the Apostles," one finds this in Greek sources, but in none of the Muscovite or Kyevan sources, even today. Even the days of her commemoration are different among the local Orthodox Churches, because she is celebrated on Feb 26 in Greek (and some Western) traditions, but not in the Slavic ones. You can also study the earliest frescoes of the Samaritan Woman, and see that she is not identified as "Photini." All this is to say, there is no "clear" and unified tradition about the Samaritan Womanso there is no need for you to preach it to me as if it is dogma. In fact you might do your research before seeking to school the rest of us in Orthodox Tradition, but that is just a suggestion.

@@VassaLarin forgive me, but none of the above was necessary to allay my concerns that a monastic member of the Orthodox Church, appeared to be using the account of Jesus Christ’s interaction with a heretic and serial adulteress, as license for a rethink on the Holy Church’s approach and response to all forms of sexual immorality. And all this, simply because of an omission by our Lord and Saviour that the Samaritan Woman should “sin no more”… Perhaps, I misinterpreted your call elsewhere on your channel, for the laity to hold the clergy etc. to account in matters of the faith. So, please forgive me if I have offended you Sr. Also, you are absolutely right, I am no expert in Orthodox Dogma or Tradition, hence my admission to merely being a
layperson. However, I am allowed to test the spirits though aren’t I? Yes, while I may not be a credentialed expert in our Holy Tradition I am a part of Christ’s body and I do have His Law written on my mind and heart by the grace of His All-Holy Spirit. Therefore, please confirm whether or not I have mischaracterised your and your guest’s exegesis of John 4:1-45 so I might know whether or not an apology is in order. Thank you in advance Sr Vassa. Glory to God for all things.

    • @VassaLarin

@@makingsmokesince76 I simply did not say that this Gospel account can be used "as license for a rethink on the Holy Church’s approach and response to all forms of sexual immorality." I do call for a rethink, time and again, of our Lord's attitude to the sinner, the concrete person, not to the abstraction of "sexual immorality." Because He addresses concrete persons in His words and actions, not abstract ideas. Your comments, on how embarrassed you are for me, etc., are unwarranted, as is their tone. Your description of your heart and mind being inscripted with the Law of God seems to exclude the possibility that I (and my guest, but you attacked only me) also have a heart and mind, not only inscripted with the Law, but with human feelings, like those that are pained by comments implying that I am devoid either of a love for our tradition, (to the living, studying and teaching of which I have dedicated my life since childhood), or of a knowledge of it. You did begin both your posts with "Forgive me," which is perplexing in light of what came after that. And please note a ryassophor monastic is not "clergy." Canonically speaking, I am not clergy, so your comments on that account are also misinformed.

Dear Sister Vassa, with all respect and many valid questions I was still shocked how you reiterate the myth of Western Democracy in the language of liberal polititians rather than an that of an Ortbodox monastic. You must know as an Orthodox Chrisrian that true freedom comes from clear concience, from obedience to God, and from the deep Peace that Christ gives. To many if us living here the moral and ethical observation is that a system of freedom to oppress and murder of the indigenous population, the freedom of stealing of other peoples land, of the right to kill ones own children in the womb or rights to mutilate one’s body and corrupt children in their innocent age is all the fruit of the kind of « freedom » that Liberal Democracies of the West have become. The true reason why the country you mention has problems witj the indigenous Arab Muslim population is not because of « democracy » and Islam clashing but because of the Terrorism of the powerful, Killing, Stealing, False witness, Oppression of the widows and children, and the hypocrisy of the religious justification by racial superiority of all the above!!!

Is this the same man who slandered the Catholic Church in the Easter of 2010? Maybe slander is a heavy word, and the Catholic Church indeed admits her guilt. But what of the sexual abuses in the Church of England swept under the carpet? Priests and bishops kept in ministry with scant regard for their propensity to reoffend. Indeed, as a christian, I'm ashamed. Ashamed not only because catholics are guilty as charged, but because as christians, we are all guilty, charged or not. This seems to be a man, like many before him, and many who will come after him, who is more interested in being RIGHT, at the expense of the truth. A sickness of our times. Right opinions matter more than the truth. But through the veil of our thoughts and the whisperings in our hearts, our own nakedness is laid bare before God. He knows the hearts of man.
