    From a guy who isn’t very smart, thank you for calmly and straight forwardly telling me that one wire goes to the brass and one goes to the silver. I spent the last hour and half freaking out when I went to change my outlet and flipping the breaker only for it to immediately go red. It was saving my life but felt like those quizzes where I just wasn’t getting the right combination. I was threading them on the same side as my ground and I COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT. I still don’t get why they have to be opposites (electricians of the world, you’re the best) but this video was wonderful. Thanks for saving me a call to a professional who would have no doubt thought less of me as a man once he figured out what I did.

    Extremely useful video. I installed two Leviton outlets after watching and they work perfectly.

    Practical video for what it is. Glad they used an old wiring instead of new construction. Great video!

    If your running your outles parallel does it matter which end (top or bottom) that you hook the wires up too? Just wondering I know some outlets have a line and load side side. Just bought 4 new Leviton TR and WR outlets that I’m going to put on a new 20 amp gfci/afci circuit (breaker). The instruction on the box don’t say if there is a load or line side. Just wondering?

      @@iamalwayswrite Sorry here to say this, it does matter in one exception, if you are replacing a split receptacle, where the small brass tab is removed from upper and lower half so a switch is able to turn on a plug in floor lamp.

    This video makes replacing an outlet look real easy. Maybe your copper wires are really thin. I'm in a small apartment and the top black copper wire will not fit around the Leviton screw; the bottom one is difficult but not impossible. It's like trying to screw a curved finger inside a thumbtack.

    I did not notice the demonstrator testing which wire was the "line" or "hot" wire and which was the "load" line. In addition, marking the hot wire with electrical tape would be helpful. Finally, when inserting wires into the back mounting, you should do so noting the proper line and load lines going into the appropriate connections, screwing them down and giving a slight tug to ensure they are secure. Just my thoughts on what I observed.

    • @davefoc
      @davefoc ปีที่แล้ว

      Was this a GFCI outlet? Line and load only matter if it was. Otherwise the wires on the left side of the outlet are connected together in the outlet and the wires on the right side of the outlet are connected together in the outlet.

      I think it is built so that when you screw the bottom screw (or top screw if you installed it with the grounds at the top) it makes the ground connection with the box with his special grounded outlet.

      The metal box is already grounded, and the receptacle has a brass spring clip to help it make contact with the metal box, i.e. “self-grounding”. I have some in my house like this, where they used BX cable (spiral metal sheathed), all the way back to the breaker box. That metal sheath of the cable is how the ground got connected to the outlet box. The same would be true if it they had used metal conduit. You still have to be careful that the spring clip makes contact and does its job.

    self grounding clip to be used as a ground when the the receptacle yoke (the metal body) is firmly touching the grounded junction box especially the self grounding metal clip-end. One can clearly see in this video it is not when installed ;This insulation definitely needs a equipment ground pig tail.----------------250.146 connecting receptacle grounding terminal to an equipment grounding conductor except permitted in 250.146(a) through (D) (A) A metal surface-mounted box if a metal-to-metal contact between the device yoke or strap to the metal box shall be permitted to provide the required effective ground fault current path.

      They do have that in their spec grade receptacle. You still need to tighten the screw, very effective and easy. The spec is not much more expensive.

    This video gives some useful tips and all, but the backstabbing should NEVER EVER be used. This method has never been safe, and I'm surprised they still design it on outlets even today. Those WILL fail, not a matter of if, but a matter of when. I've actually had one fail in my own home, and it caused my bathroom lights to go out because of it, and the lights in my relative's home failed as well. It's just a way of them making profit.

      What's the reason for this? Why would all manufacturers give you this option if you shouldn't use it? I honestly don't know please explain.

    • @kurt2439
      @kurt2439 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonnham there is a mechanical device (a spring tab i believe l) that makes the connection between the wire and the receptacle. Many people feel / experience that this doesn’t create as good of a connection compared to using the screws which you can torque down yourself and visually inspect the connection. This is a connection you will make one time and not see or inspect for decades so it makes sense to be confident about the quality of your connections. That being said, the manufacturers wouldn’t put those connections there if they didn’t conclude they were effective so it’s no surprise they demonstrate the use of those mechanisms. It’s the installer choice which to use, both meet code requirements
