I second that. It baffles me to see how some people keep these amazing lizards. I can't hardly get on craigslist anymore. I see most in horridable situations and want to save all of them. I e rescued 7 this year alone.😫
Seriously. It honestly makes me so sad thinking about all the pets being neglected. The owner didn't even put a single plant in the enclosure! Why would you buy such a nice gecko just to watch it suffer?
Honestly they probably got it from a normal pet store, anybody who takes care of an animal like that definitely didn’t go to a breeder. I’ve seen lots of really pretty crested geckos at Petco/PetSmart as well.

Allen Jay he’s pretty and all but the person who got him didn’t even have him in a proper enclosure, I can almost guarantee he went to a PetSmart or Petco who buy animals from a bulk breeder than doesn’t even keep the babies long enough to see their adult coloration. We also can’t know his “genetics” just that he has an interesting pattern. He also doesn’t have great head structure which is indicative of low quality breeding. Like I said, he’s very pretty but he probably wasn’t sold for more than $60.
When I got my first gecko, I found red spots all over him, freaked out, assumed it was blood and he was cutting himself on the plastic plants (they are sharp to me) and stripped the tank of his hanging leaves. Googled it, found out that some geckos have red dalmation spots. Crisis averted. Felt silly. Lol

If he hasn't got a name yet, I took one look at him and the name Samson came into my head...for all the strength he has shown in enduring his trials in life. I rescued a crested gecko too, came in a 20g tall tank, no decor at all. She also was always fed crickets, the guy didn’t even know what Pangea or repashy was. Definitely changed that! Now has a 24 18 18, bunch of plants and a proper diet. I wish I could post pictures!
12x12x18 can work for a gecko with tons of foliage and such but oh my god. the heat lamp inside the tank will 100% burn an arboreal reptile. not to mention the fire hazard. also OFFICE PET??? any animal needs daily care or at least monitoring. period, end of story
I "rescued" my Gargoyle Gecko. She was at a local pet store, the person who had her didn't want her anymore so she ended up in the pet store. Not sure if they bred her and was done breeding her or what. BUT she was missing a toe, stuck in a terrible shed, and I just had to have her. She also ate SO MUCH Repashy the 1st week I had her, like she was starving. Since I had her(a year now) she's never had any stuck shed, so I imagine they didn't know how to mist the tank or something.

I own that same exact as Zilla heat lamp and they tend to be very hot. I once burnt a piece of clothing and my hand on it and so imagine if the gecko were to climb onto it!

What an absolute cutie! he must be loads happier with you already! To me, he kinda looks like a Banana! Yellow, with some brown blotches, while he is not in perfect condition(the Floppy tail syndrome), he is still perfectly adorable

Then the other half I spent browsing craigslist for pets that I clearly know I can't get. And my list of pets that I want has doubled including animals I never wanted previously!!! I can understand how it can become an addiction. Anywho, I have been researching how to open a pet rescue as my town doesn't even have one. Any tips would be appreciated!!
My current day gecko Vivarium is ok, not good but not bad. It’s an 18x18x24 exo terra. I got your standard bioactive layers, egg crate w Leca, a piece of window screen, and ABG Substrate. I got rid of the background as Mr. Lizard (My Gecko!) got trapped behind it. Luckily, when I released him there was no obvious injury but he was really stressed. I have 3 cork flats leaning around, I arranged them so he has a lot of neat hiding spots. I have a large exo terra suction cup plant, and a Golden Pothos buried in the soil. My plan is to make an extravagant background (building up supplies for it currently) and put in a lot more plants and cork bark (Reply whether or not I should do ghost wood?) Not a very good tank overall, but it’s only temporary
I have 2 crested geckos named nugget and pumpkin nugget is pretty calm and pumpkin is pretty jumpy and they like maybe 4 months old and I love them they both change to dark and light one has some Dalmatian spots one has really really small light dots on his nose

With the office thing I'm like omg.... Even put college pets in my animal management class all have a student or a teacher visiting the animal during the weekend. During holidays the animals will be with teachers and so on-- hhhh

Omg he’s sooooo cuuuttee!! I love pinstripes! TY for rescuing him!! :) Regarding the tail issue- maybe take him to a vet so you can get X-Rays done? He seems to be getting around just fine so maybe it’s ok? (to leave it there I mean). The X-Rays would be able to rule out any hip deformity issues. The only X-Rays I’ve seen photos of that did have FTS causing hip issues was w/a female who also had MBD.
FTS doesn't harm them in any way, especially with him being a male. there's no reason for it to be removed. it doesn't actually affect their hips. there's an xray somewhere on the internet that shows that it doesn't mis-align their hips at all. it doesn't cause pain, it's just weaker muscles. you can prevent this by putting more foliage in your cage.
You cant prevent it when its already happened. And one xray doesnt mean anything. Ive personally had a gecko with FTS that came to me that way and because of it his spine ended up being jacked up. It is 100 percent possible that it can cause issues, depending on the length of time the gecko lives like that. It cannot be fixed but it can be stopped from getting worse. And you can clearly see his hips have something wrong with them, you dont need an xray to see that.
That's a UVB (which isn't necessary but crested geckos seem to enjoy it) and, if I'm correct, that's the exoterra tropical kit which comes with basically nothing but the tank, analog thermometer, and background. So they did no additional purchasing for this animal and that's insane.
what temp. do you recommend for a crested geckos enclosure & where do you get your supplies from ( digital thermometer/ humidity gauge, enclosure, plants, etc )

I have the same tanks (it comes as a kit) for my babies because they were super cheap on sale, but honestly the heat lamp is too hot for them even above the tank. I used it for an hour and put my hand under it and it was well above 90 degrees at the top of the tank. I’m glad you were able to save him!! His original setup is horrendous and I’m honestly surprised he looks as good as he does!

It’s the Zilla kit, and it’s a heat lamp that comes with it. Not UVB. This one in particular gets very, very hot
