  • $2 BLACKSMITH TONGS! Repurposing Garage sale Hoof Nippers! These will be the cheapest blacksmithing tongs you've ever seen! You can find these cheap hoof nippers at any rural garage sale for a couple bucks and easily transform them into blacksmithing tongs that would cost a LOT more! The skill level required for this also makes it great for amateur blacksmiths like myself who may be building up their blacksmithing tools.
Check out our new blacksmithing shirt, available here: teespring.com/... All profits will support our work to restore the blacksmith's shop at Old Mill Pond!
The wire brush I use in the video can be found here:
    amzn.to/2wlS58x
It's dirt cheap and handy as heck!

I have a few pair of end nippers, one pair total junk. Thanks for the idea, I'll give them a new purpose when my forge arrives.I like the way that young fellows' eyes lit up when you offered him your knife. Priceless. He'll never forget you. It made my day too. We need to do that more often. Thanks.

So cool you gave that young man a blade. Better still, you gave him a project. Thank you for taking the time to share. I've ruined nippers because I didn't normalize. Good heads up.

So kind of you to donate time and, more importantly, enthusiasm for this project. Your positive contribution here will impact many, many people - including young people - in their understanding of the almost-lost art of blacksmithing. Thanks for your hard work, and thank you for bringing us along. You are a true gentleman.

Attaching the magnet to the anvil is a great idea. Minimizes the risk of burning yourself by testing with a handheld magnet, but keeps the magnet in a known, and close location.

Frequently the rivet will break while you are doing this, in which case you are actually better off by being able to reforge the bits to something more useful!
Flat jaw tongs ARE useful but not as much as to forge then into the Bolt Jaw tongs ot forging the bits around round stock or any number of other things!
Also, some of them will be completely wonky and you'll have to completely reposition the reins so that the close like they are supposed to! Sometimes, when you are done, the reins will close the jaws by OPENING then insteadof squeezing them shut! You'll have to watch out for that!
    Good job! Thanks for uploading!

Seeing the marks that leave your work on the anvil, you should sharpen a bit the "under the nose" of it .
Don't know anything about forging, but, I'm not that blind in the same time ...
So whatever you think about, it will help yourself having it done an get an opinion about the "advice" ...
Got thoses blades already sharpened and really like the shape, the design of them ...
It's not that easy to build a blade that fit to your hand ...
Used to have one made in warthog ivory that no long stay mine in the close up the cops ...
That was my mother that bring back those teeth from Ethiopia ...
Interesting deal they made there .

You don’t need to normalize them before forging. Just make sure that you are forging them hot enough. After you’re done forging you should normalize a couple times to relieve the stress caused by forging. But it’s a good idea using old nippers to make some flat tongs.

Minus the shakey anvil I enjoyed the video..except for one thing: If those nippers already had a hand peened rivet, you may have just threw money away. It was more than likely an antique and worth a bit more than $2 and could've sold them and used money to go to the scrap yard and buy much more material to forge. But i understand, the reigns and boss are already done and any easy repurposing process for a beginner's first pair of tongs.
Regarding the rivet...you may not have needed a new one. Just heat up to critical one side at a time hit center of pein with ball pein end of hammer, then work the outer part if rivet head, let cool to at least dark red and repeat with other side.

MY first tongs were clincher tongs. We have horse ranches in the area, and so there is a farrier's supply shop at the far edge of town. I was super happy to find the local farriers sometimes bring their used tools to this shop for resale on consignment. I was fortunate to fins a pair at a super low price. I think when I go back I'll look for nippers I can rework too. Good video! Great advice on annealing the tips first.

I am glad to see another blacksmith using the forge facilities at Old Mill Pond. Myself and my apprentices spent a lot of time repairing most of the blowers and forges so they would work. Due to increase in classes that I teach we haven't been able to get out for another demo ourselves in quite some time Hope to be there again soon. Don't know what happened to the anvil stand you were using. That thing was stable when I first finished it. Still a lot of work to go on the place and I need more time to be able to DONATE more time for what needs to be done. Keep up the good work.

I have gotten several pairs off of ebay a couple of years ago but never figured out how to convert them. Now I do.

You need to set your anvil better brother. Trying to forge anything on a wobbly anvil is twice the work

    Hi
The next time you aneal some iron like the tongs or nipers try
after heating placeing the heated metal in dry sand. The sand will keep any air drafts away from the heated metal.
    Some steels are Air Hardening!
    THanks for your vids
