Not as much as it should have, at least not in the beginning. Atlantic didn't know how to market country records. Not surprising considering this was the first country album their new Nashville division had ever released. The sales had to wait until 'Red Headed Stranger' three years later after Atlantic closed their Nashville division and Willie signed with Columbia. Even then, Columbia didn't want to release an album that sounded to their executives like "a bunch of demos". Billy Sherrill, one of Columbia's top producers, told them to go ahead and release it. "When it flops, then he'll have to listen to us." Later Sherrill, in a rare public admission of his fallibility picking what would and would not sell, said, "We were wrong." Once 'Red headed Stranger' took off, Atlantic couldn't keep stores supplied with 'Shotgun Willie' and 'Phases & Stages' fast enough.
Wow, this Willie kid may be star some day! 😇 Thanks for the upload...such great quality! I would say it looks like it was filmed yesterday, but the fact that Trigger has way fewer scars and holes gives it away.🤭
this was either before or after the shotgun willie album. thats a good album. the words dont fit the picture album from the 60 era is a real good one. google it.
Must have been after the Shotgun Willie album, as far as I know around the release of Phases and Stages. The words don’t fit the picture is a great album, I love it! Did Willie maybe sang some of the songs at his 1972 Armadillo show that you have seen?
This is actually on the shotgun Willie album I believe. It was the title track off the sad songs and waltzes album posthumously released by Keith Whitley
❤Great and lovely musician ❤❤❤I admire and love you so much Willie ❤❤❤❤❤
I have a lot to learn about country music, turns out, some of it is really good.
Ernest Tubb
Sturgill Simpson
Tip of the iceburg bruh
Guy Clark
He is the essence of what all music could be.
I was wondering if Willie was ever young. First time I have seen/heard him singing as a younger man.
Looks about 45 😂 he’s the best
Great

Real Country; glad to see Cody Johnson's remake with Willie!!
Agreed, and Tyler Childers did a pretty good version too.

It’s cool to see someone cover a Cake song. It’s not as good as the original but this Willie guy may be somebody someday.
cake could have written it in alternate universe😅
😂😂👍🏻
How does this have only 160 views an 14 comments
The official version from the album has 104,000 views. This is a bootleg live film.
Fuck kids there's nothing like hearing a Cake cover from 1974 in 2022. It's a good thing.
Thanks for CAKE for being here ❤️❤️❤️🤘🤘🤘🥰

This song was on 'Shotgun Willie'.
Does Willie ever sing a bad song?!?!
A few, but not this early in his career. He also wrote this one.
But this is a sad song and a waltz! Pretty clever.
I came here from Cake’s Version. Damn Willie, this song is Beautiful! 💗
Great
