Thank you very much for posting your channel. It brought back many memories of when I did field service in a half ton RWD van in all of Colorado and the surrounding 6 states, from 1986 to 1999. Every single day in every kind of weather visiting just about every gas station where I had machines. Easily drove 60K miles every year. Never had an accident and never got stuck and never used chains. Good tires are a must and I got a full set of Michelin tires every September. It is really interesting how much that entire area has changed, looks almost completely different.
Mountain Man...Congrats to You on 18k shotgunners! On a sunny afternoon, on I-70 eastbound in the Colorado Rockies! OTR running against the wind~while Mike talks 18-wheeler winter driving! Thanks for Ride! Be Safe! Peace.
Glad you made it off of Vail area mountains safely. You may have been the best driver out there but it looks like you had to deal with many inexperienced drivers for the conditions. Be careful as there is always those crazy other drivers that can get in your way. Pretty snow video. What a great dad and grandfather....helping out with the tires. My husband has rescued many family members with their vehicles. His years of working on his old cars he learned something.
I’m not a truck driver, that being said, thank you for explaining your situations. I will be a better car driver for your lessons. Be safe and blessed.
Boy, I don't miss trucking but now fun to watch. Been through that stretch a few times and stuck in Rifle looking for a load paying more then a buck a mile.
Happy New Year Mountain Man Mike!! Another awesome video with great advice from a professional driver. Looking forward to seeing more great videos during 2020. Happy trucking trails and stay safe!
Wow the road looks a lot better. That copper mountain is really steep. Beautiful landscape. I enjoyed your explaining how if people would do what they needed to do , there would be no problem with there self and everyone around them. But with all the information you gave us there's going to be someone who thinks they know everything and make it bad for everybody else. I feel pretty safe to ride with you . You have drove in the mountains most of your life. You are using second nature to drive in the snow. I love the snow videos . All said and done it can't be denied you know what the hell you are doing. Thanks for taking us along. As always God Bless you and your family and your Bessie. Hope 2020 is prosperous year for you. Happy New Year. ♥️🇺🇸🥰✌️
Enjoying the ride Mountianman Mike. Back in the sixty s , a school counselor told me I should become a truck driver. Honestly, I don't remember anything else about that meeting. Fast forward to the summer of 2019, I am still traveling those roads but I never became a truck driver. Had I done so, I can only imagine the roads and experiences I would have loved. But I do all right . This past summer I soloed a trip to SC from Ma , (not my first, although much younger then) stopping in VA overnight. On the return trip four week later, I drove straight home. Took me seventeen hours on Route 95, through some heavy traffic and loved every minute. Crazy to some people but you may understand what I m saying about driving. So my high school counselor wasn't that far off a career path suggestion for this student . Looking forward to your next video.
As I watch, it is snowing again in Grand Junction (1/1/2020 9:20 am). Safe travels if you're out on the highways today. Enjoy riding along on your adventures. Have a Happy and Safe 2020.
thank you again for this beautiful video. I love what I see and hear lol, about the drinking I mean. Maybe the fact that you are getting older has something to do with the fact that you don't get drunk anymore LOL. I love to listen to you, you have such calming voice.
I luv the vids....I don't know if you ever watched the tv show Longmire, there was a character on there that went by the name Jacob Knighthorse.....you sound the EXTACTLY like him...lol. PS. Happy new year !!
Hey Mike At 20:18 mike the choke-the-chicken was missing. Where's he? Were you in a different truck that time or did you just take him down? JUST BEING OBSERVANT
Hi Mike: Happy New Year. Today is 1.1.20 just got back from south padre island. It was cool there windy and wet. Flew half the day, never left Texas. Home now and catching up on my favorite video poster. Hope your having a safe and good New Year’s Day? Look forward to the next video, enjoyed this one. Please keep them coming. Did you buy a new caddy yet? Be safe. Edward
Welcome back Ed.. glad you got some vaycay.. yeah I just bought a 2018 CTS-V last Saturday the 28th.. I'm fixing to do a quick video on it here soon.. ☮️
You are a great teacher. So many young Truckers out there value your wise words. Vail Pass has the most beautiful scenery. Your daughter has a very caring Dad. Great to hear about tyres and how important they are in snow. What's this about being a criple, yes, you have 2 bung knees which doesn't stop you! Very enjoyable as usual. All the best for 2020. Looking forward to the next time Riding Shotgun. ✌
Mike, do you happen to know what diameter chain link material your tire chains are made out of. I am only guessing its the lighter size 7mm for highway use and the bag packaging may not give you that info anyway but rather part numbers for them and have to look up the specs. About your daughters car, a person is SOL with those silly wheel keys if one has a flat and no way to get the tire off without the correct key and have to get towed to a shop to sort it out so good call in replacing them with lug nuts and the foresight to put winter tires on. Blows me away how many people run total crap tires on their vehicles during the winter.
In statics is the pressure of the tires on the road (axes) reliant with the load because in dynamics the acceleration or deceleration is reliant with the load. The pressure of the tires on the road is not the same as the grip. Although more pressure on the way by the tires with a more heavy load because of the bigger acceleration/deceleration force stays the grip the same. Grip changes with the surface as the extent of acceleration or deceleration (breaks) as with the measure of the tires (big/ wide) and it's profile (water drain). Trying the breaks is certainly the way to know your grip. With the growing of the load has the grip not grown and must you still take care. The way you film and your openly comment I can really appreciate, respect. Happy new year, bro and peace.
You're trying to "over-think" the whole thing. Pretty obvious you have probably NEVER driven in any sort of snow conditions. There are so many variables, which can change constantly such as outside temperature as you ascend or descend a mountain pass. You have to learn from experience how to handle a rig on a variety of conditions and be able to recognize which conditions you're dealing with on each trip. You do not have time to get mentally lost in a lot theories of the dynamics of acceleration and deceleration and coefficients of friction. Let yourself get all "wrapped up" in that stuff and you're attention is going to NOT be focused on the actions of other drivers, changing road surface conditions and the way your rig is handling/ responding. Yes the traction available on the drive wheels is greater with more weight on them, but when you're climbing a mountain grade, the added weight of the trailer MAY negate the effect of the weight on the drive axles. That is why we have tire chains. A trailer also "pulls harder" in a turn that when going straight ahead, so you need to put chains on to be able to negotiate any tight switch-back turns without breaking traction and spinning out in the turn, which would be about the worst possible place to spin out and have to then put the chains on.
Yes, the weight on the drive axles most definitely influences traction. In mountain regions with snowy winter climates people even add weight such as sand bags in rear-wheel drive vehicles, to improve traction on slippery conditions. Sorry but the way your question was worded got into such technical aspects of the scientific theories that it seemed your bottom line question was not that clear. As you may have gathered from the video and Mike's comments, driving in snowy winter conditions in the mountains has issues and challenges even for passenger cars, which can be much different from the "flat lands".
super *awesome* video. beautiful scenery. I greatly appreciate it! It truly feels like I was there with you, riding shotgun. 😁 Everything you had said, I agree with. To add, the importance of tires cannot be over-stated. They are the only four points of contacts between you and the road. Tires should always be in good condition.
Enjoy the snow. Get a nice Yamaha Grizzly 700 and a set of Camso Tracks Like I did and get out there!!!! Power steering, plush suspension, makes it worthwhile!! PS, great commentary on chaining up all 4
I had a friend years ago who was a truck driver.Don't know if he is still cause we lost contact but he hauled food products. At times when he finished a delivery sometimes the boxes were damaged and the recievers wouldn't except them and he was told to throw it in the trash.Once he said it was steaks and he kept some for friends to have a dinner and one time he gave me a few bags of resturant style coffee bags.Is this true your told to throw out damaged containers in transport?
I see that FedEx truck passing you in fair weather and think "that's right Buckwheat you need to make up the time you spent cowering at the side of the road when it snowed".
Because blizzaks are the best I put them on back in 2004 when I was driving to the back roads of the Adirondacks all winter. Went places with a car that 4 x4 had trouble
I have to make a new years confession. Last night I watched another driver. Not a trucker "interstate kyle" he was on i70 . Eisenhower tunnel..i said out loud "I been on that road with mountain man mike"!! Happy new year from dee in chicago
Blizzaks are the best tires! I had them on my Rav were great now i got Michelins but these are crap one more season and i m gonna get those Bridgs again!
@@ridingshotgun1251 My answer was kind of loaded. Even though the C-130 load capacity is listed at 42000 pounds that number is somewhat fake because it's all based on a limited load factor which takes into account of how much fuel is onboard. So if I was flying from San Diego to Hawaii the airplane can haul about 29,000 pounds. Oh, I've airdropped tanks that weigh just about your load today but due to the limited wing load we can't travel that far. In short, the aircraft needs fuel to strengthen the wing and in simple math the more fuel the less of a load because the aircraft has a max weight of 155,000 pounds.
