Another heart felt, family owned car and car story! Angie and her family have faithfully kept Aunt Janice's Roadrunner looking fine and fit for fun not just for all of them, but also for all of us to enjoy. I truly appreciate that. Thanks, Lou!
Wasn't aware there was a 78 Roadrunner. I used to think those orange and yellow graphics that found their way into a lot of things from the 70s were cheesy and tacky, but now I appreciate them for being a unique signature from a much different time.
Hi James, I don't recall seeing many of them back in 1978, and really to rare treat to see one of them now. Happy to read "now I appreciate them for being a unique signature from a much different time" :-) Lou
Yep Ford went crazy in 78-79 with those orange and yellow stickers. They put them on Bronkos, Econolines and Pinto wagons. Jeeps had them. Z-28s and Trans Ams had them. AMC even joined in with their Concord/Spirit AMX's
Once again, a car from the late '70's that I wouldn't be caught dead in at the time......and now I would drive this car all day every day. It's amazing what time does to one's perspective. Lou- great story, great video!
When I was way younger, I laughed at that car no high horse power, little chrome, now I realize it’s a damn nice gorgeous car , looks great & so rare … thx Lou
Another great episode, Mr. Lou. I love listening to our Southern women talk, there’s no more a soothing sound on the ear in all the World. Just don’t make ‘em mad!
I'm the original owner of a 1980 Road Runner. It's the last year for the Road Runner. It won't melt asphalt, but it turns heads everywhere I drive it. It's a great looking car and is fun to drive. One of 496 made. The Dodge version, the R/T, is even rarer at 285 made.

Great story and sweet ride. Such a nice family. I like the 70s vibe. Very cool. I got to ride in several Aspens and Volares and liked them. A bit wider, more stylish Dart and Valiant. Love the color combo and T-top
I graduated from HS in 1977 and a classmate's dad gifted him a new one of these for grad. I thought he was the luckiest guy and I still remember it so vividly.

Pure '70s in its colors and presentation. Just needs some Boston, Bad Company or Thin Lizzy on the 8-track! 📼 🎸🎸🥁🎤Wonderful to see this family heirloom preserved.
Nice video. In 78, at 16, I bought a "cool used car" w/52k miles, a 71Charger R/T 440 auto. In 79, for graduation, I ordered a brand new Dodge Aspen R/T, the twin to the Volarè Roadrunner E58 "police" 360 4bbl. In 2015, I got my greatest car ever, a 70 Roadrunner V-code 440 6bbl 4 speed, and it was such a fountain of joy!

I had a 1979 Volare with a slant 6. It was 18 or 19 years old when I got it $600. Put on 4 new tires, a new battery, flushed the radiator, changed the oil, got a tune up and cruised. It was basic transportation from point A to point B. A year or so later, sold it for $600.
This 1978 Plymouth Road Runner really looks amazing with that black paint and those nice four-tone stripes that run all over the body! The lower front and rear spoilers give it that even more aggressive and sporty look, not to mention the nice addition of the removable split roof. I was surprised to see that the doors and interior seats also had that striking four-tone stripe, perfectly matching the cream and black of the upholstery and console. Lastly, it was a great idea to take a ride with this nice family on those beautiful roads... Congratulations to Angie for sharing her interesting story, including anecdotes, of how she came to own this unique Road Runner from her aunt! Best regards, Lou!
Hi Jaime, Happy to read "This 1978 Plymouth Road Runner really looks amazing" :-) Thank you for sharing what you see and think. Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
As I have mentioned before my ownership of a 1980 Volare sedan gives me a proclivity to already like this car. The fact that it is beautiful and well taken care of seals the deal. Another great find Lou.
What a beautiful example of a rare Plymouth! I used to see some of these on the road during the late 70s /80s. They were very few then! The black box had the silver sticker Electronic Spark Control Computer. This was an earlier attempt for emissions. Beautiful family and 👍 Great story. May they enjoy the car for many years to come!😊

Bravo LouWonderful family and car story. I had a buddy with a 77 Aspen R/T 360. His 360 was breathing quite a bit better without the LeanBurn system. He put a Mopar Performance 360 Crate motor in it. I think it had 380hp at the crank. He was Track Champion in the Sportsman class 1/8th mile 3 years in a row. It wasn't the fastest car but Very Consistent Bracket Racer✌️🥸🥪

What a great family! Love to see various folks who are car lovers. There is a bit of that in all of us!! I loved these re-worked Road Runners. Love cars from the late's 70's and the 80's too. Love their simplicity. This Road Runner was in great shape. Love it. I remember seeing a few of them back in the day. Tradiitional Road Runner owners were not fond of them. I thought they were great, they just didn't have the power of the original RR's. Love the spoiler here. Love the interior too. Nice smooth ride.

Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) "They should have come with the " little Red Express" truck 360." NICE! Like this one th-cam.com/video/8kfwTnV9UUY/w-d-xo.html
Yes, 1978 model year with the VIN for the win: H for Plymouth Volare, L for low price class, 29 for two door special coupe, K for 360 CID V8 with four barrel, 8 for 1978 model year, B for Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Hamtramck MI plant was also called "Dodge Main" or "Factory Zero" and today's GM Hamtramck Assembly or "D-Ham" partially sits on the old site. Hard to make it out, but it looks like it was assembled on Wednesday April 26, 1978. Exterior paint is code TX9 Formal Black. Yes, it's missing the "Electronic Spark Control" decal. Those units were pesky and troublesome. It would have been nice to have shown the fender tag.

The rust problem you're referring to is with the front fenders. To cut costs, Chrysler did not build the '76 and '77's with inner front fender wells. The front fenders rusted off as soon as you put a bag of salted peanuts in the glove box. There was an enormous, costly recall to replace the fenders and add the inner fender wells. The problem was corrected by 1978.
@@btzimmer Thank you and yes I had bought a '76 brand new. It was disgusting. The car was only about 1-1/2 years old really bad. I got rid of it and never bought another Chrysler product. The end.
That's a cool car story. As a New Zealander every time I see somewhere in Pennsylvania on TH-cam videos, it stands out to me how lush and green it is .
I've lived in PA for all of my 68 years. I live on what we call the North Coast of the US on the lake in Erie. We have everything except a desert. Camping, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing. Yep, we can do that. The forests are so dense in some areas that a deer can be standing in brush a few feet away and you won't see it til it freaks out and runs away. If you ever get up this way I'll be happy to show you around.
Hi Lou! The interior looks like it was designed by the same guy who designed the early 1970’s Houston Astros baseball jerseys! Rocking the yellow, orange, and brown!
Hi OldRustySteele! "The interior looks like it was designed by the same guy who designed the early 1970’s Houston Astros baseball jerseys!" You're right, I can see Nolan Ryan stepping into this one after a game, Lou
I remember a local Fireman in town had the twin to this, new in the late '70s, and he was always working on it when he had some free time. It was fitted with Glasspacks, and even had a manual transmission, so he would blip the throttle when he'd leave the firehouse, then ease-off, and as it slowed-down, it sounded like fireworks popping... seems like yesterday!

Doesn't. matter what badge they have. Everyone has their baby. I had a 76 Volare with the duce and a quarter in it. Fun car to cruise on the cheap. They did actually ride very well and they could take turns fairly well.

@loucostabile I'm a subscriber Lou. When I get my TH400 pitch switch completed and installed I might have a 65 GS you'd look at. It's been 28 years of finding the exact parts to bring her back up to the build sheet. But worth every minute. Love your channel, it shows all of car nuts we're not crazy for holding onto our Detroit artwork.
A very nice Road Runner survivor it is immaculate and has the Tuff wheel and the super cool very rare interior! Too bad we didn't get a look at the fender tag to tell the rest of the story about the car. Anyway I love the F body Mopar I have a 79 and an 80! Thanks for sharing! 💯🏁

The first car I ever bought was a 1977 Dodge Aspen, completely black with the spoiler and louvers. Mine had steel rims with dog dish hubcaps and a slant six. I think it's every bit as attractive as the earlier duster, I loved that car.

Great car and story behind it. I don’t remember seeing any of these I do remember the Volari and I think the Aspen from this year. It’s a cool looking car though and it might be running a little rich and rough. I see it has the Chrysler lean burn ignition. You never fail to disappoint Lou have a great day.
In ‘78 I worked in a Chrysler Plymouth dealer…there were 2 of these that would come in for service..one identical to this, and a white one with the stripes and flares and t-tops

What are great survivor I know that's not one of the more desired collectible roadrunners but it's great to see one again too bad they didn't have the old school horn I would probably try to change that with a day two option
They also offered a NASCAR edition, had exaggerated, fender, flares, and labeled appropriately had the same engine. The details were different but a similar car like this roadrunner.😮❤
@@loucostabile thanks Lou. I clicked on it and watched that one and that is the car like I said on that site the only one of those cars I ever seen was in West Virginia a Mopar man had one kept it in his garage only time he ever took it out was when they had, their Christmas parade through Harrisville West Virginia thanks again for the good memories. God bless you.🙏
I was 18 in 1978, and I remember when those late "Road Runners" came out. Most of the buyers were dyed-in-the-wool Mopar enthusiasts who wouldn't be seen dead in anything but their preferred brand, but let's face it: none of the other manufacturers had much to offer either (definitely not Ford's Mustang II that I ended up with). Gm did have the Firebird Trans Am that you could get with the HO Pontiac 400 with a 4-speed (they had "T/A 6.6" on the shaker scoop, unlike the Oldsmobile sourced "6.6 Litre" decal), and the Camaro could still be had with a 350; both were a shadow of the horsepower that had been available just a few years before, but the big sway bars, 15x8" rims and quick-ratio steering still made for a fun ride that obviously had been R&D'd by an engineering team (unlike the others). Even with all the Mustang II's faults, the front suspension and rack and pinion steering gave a far superior driving experience than much of the competition, even if the 5.0 liter HO was a few more years down the road. I think where Mopar dropped the ball on this was their lack of putting any of the police package goodies that were at least in the pipeline such as "Firm Feel" steering and the wider rims, stiffer torsion bars, hd cooling and the like. At this time though, Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy, and they weren't putting any R&D funding into the Volare/Aspen platform. These weren't bad cars, but what the dealers were wanting to charge price-wise for essentially a tape stripe package turned off a lot of buyers; the Dodge "Little Red Express" trucks sold much better, and they weren't required to have catalytic converters from the factory. . .but now, almost 50 years on, I'm glad someone bucked the trend so we can enjoy this piece of history.

So Lou you know I dont comment on the GM and dodge videos as , yes , I am an out spoken hater . I also even disown my own brand of the smog era cars . But Ho Leee , hell...... This one is a Gem of a gem . The car , the story , the familly girl that didnt just see dollar signs... Bravo to the Aunt for taking such good care of the old girl because its an amazing car that you honestly just dont see ANY of out here in the world. By 78 they had made some advancements in many areas that we cannot deny making this car a real joy to drive I bet... I hope it stays in the familly for many generations to come... Thinking that one day that baby there might be prowling around in it makes me happy. Beep Beep.......
So Kyle, "This one is a Gem of a gem" High praise. "Thinking that one day that baby there might be prowling around in it makes me happy" That will be the updated video with Cabel driving me around :-) Lou

In the mid '80's, down the street from me there was a mint condition Aspen R/T body (same car as this, but a Dodge) mounted on a Blazer frame. The guy never finished it, and I think it all went to the scrapyard. What a waste. Always good to see a survivor.

It was an option pack on the Volare rather than its own model. There was an equivalent R/T optioned Aspen.
Last Roadrunner was in 1980, only available V-8 was a 318 after that the Volare was gone replaced by the 4 cylinder K-Cars...
I'm sure that I've seen the 'Spectra" stripe package before, but had no idea that it carried on into the interior. Actually looks really good today.

i talked to the owner...it is 102K!
A very beautiful car. They should have come with the " little Red Express" truck 360.
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) "They should have come with the " little Red Express" truck 360." NICE! Like this one th-cam.com/video/8kfwTnV9UUY/w-d-xo.html
Nice car! Painfully difficult to get many of the parts today. Love it.
Happy to read "Love it" :-)
Yes, 1978 model year with the VIN for the win: H for Plymouth Volare, L for low price class, 29 for two door special coupe, K for 360 CID V8 with four barrel, 8 for 1978 model year, B for Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence.

Totally amazing and wonderful, especially nice since these were horribly prone to very significant rusting. A real jewel👑
HI Ed B, Happy to read "Totally amazing and wonderful" :-) My pleasure sharing this "real jewel" with you, Lou
The end.
Hi Lou my old boss had this car up here in north-eastern Alberta. Very cool to see Angie car from her aunt. Nice video!

That's a cool car story. As a New Zealander every time I see somewhere in Pennsylvania on TH-cam videos, it stands out to me how lush and green it is .
Hi Barrycuda, Happy to read you enjoy this "cool car story" and glad to read you enjoy the environment too, Lou
Pennsylvania has been described as Pittsburgh on one end, Philadelphia on the other end, and Arkansas in the middle 😊
@@Ontariosound It looks like a place where nature would take over fast if you didn't keep it at bay.
@@barrycuda3769 Very true. Very green.
Even though the popular ones are 68,69 and 70.....this one is very rare and very nice. Great car❤👌👍
Happy to read you appreciate this "Great car" :-)
I love the Roadrunners! My fav 1970. Great video as always Lou!
Hi Bob, Happy to read "I love the Roadrunners!" :-) My pleasure sharing with you, Lou
Hi Lou! The interior looks like it was designed by the same guy who designed the early 1970’s Houston Astros baseball jerseys! Rocking the yellow, orange, and brown!

Beautiful car and one of the last Plymouth muscles. Quite rare to see such a clean looking Volare Road Runner👌👍 Nice ride and episode, Lou.

What are great survivor I know that's not one of the more desired collectible roadrunners but it's great to see one again too bad they didn't have the old school horn I would probably try to change that with a day two option
Hi Larry, You're right, you don't see these today. My pleasure sharing this one with you, Lou

God bless you.🙏
@@loucostabile it was called the Kit Car and was only offered in 1978. Only 247 made.

My favorite kind of car story.
Nice :-)
Probably one of the quickest cars of 78.
You're right.
Probably not.......L82 corvette and 400 trans am weren't that bad
@@Robert-bg2nm probably top 10, bit that electronic spark control/ lean burn system and highway gears did not help
the fastest vehicle from the factory in 1978 was the Dodge Lil Red Express with the W58 police car engine and no catalytic converters

In the mid '80's, down the street from me there was a mint condition Aspen R/T body (same car as this, but a Dodge) mounted on a Blazer frame. The guy never finished it, and I think it all went to the scrapyard. What a waste. Always good to see a survivor.
