Love your video and the dresser. Do you apply the stain directly after/on the last bleaching step? Also do you apply any top varnish to protect the dresser from water stains? If no, then why not? What would the varnish layer do to the appearance of the dresser? I want to do this to a table but need to protect it from water stains.
So I did your technique. It came out so amazing! My sister who is an interior designer was so impressed she couldn’t believe the finish. I used a stripper and that was such a nightmare! Then I used the pickle stain. I went one step further and added a clear coat. I did this on a dine table.
@@marlinadykema6474 I chose not to topcoat it bc I had heard most would darken the color and make it look shinier, if you really need a topcoat for like a dining room table type situation I have heard general finishes flat out flat doesn’t darken it. I personally would just leave it raw and just sand it if something spills on it or use white wax unless it were something high traffic
Paper towels leave micro woodsy splinters which may settle in the wood grain. A microfiber rag doesn’t deposit anything. Lovely piece❣️For Florida this look would be great! 😎🌴🌻

I love orange red wood, but only if it’s in incredible shape, like our master bedroom suite! I bought it very gently used June of 2012! It’s high end Thomasville and it’s Gorgeous still! It’s burle and tiger oak mix, a beauty! I’m just not crazy about the double mirrors over my dresser. I have not seen a mirror yet for the price that I like better though, so I’m waiting. Hubby likes the mirrors, I’m the one that cleans them. I’d rather clean one, than 2 tall ones. 😆 🥰 I love ❤️ that look you did! Would be so beautiful our coastal rustic craftsman master bedroom!
Hello sweet girl boy this piece came out amazing I am working on a piece and I have it down to the Royal I used the bleach I did it twice I think I’m going to be doing it again tomorrow and I will be using a spray bottle like you did because I painted it on. Left in the sun to get lighter, the only issue was I have some grooves on the legs so I had to get some Orangewood stripper applied in the grooves until they got lighter. Tomorrow I will be bleaching it again hopefully it comes out a lighter color which it has already on the top I love it my question is this do I have to use the Minwax White paint you used? Or can I use my white paint water it down and apply it? Thank you for sharing you are amazing and all the work that you do love watching you and listening to you I know it comes from the heart. This finish is really strong!! Valspar enamel is definitely going in my regular rotation of paints, perfect for heavy use areas like chairs, tables and cabinets

Yes you’ll need to seal it for sure with it being exposed to water and stuff. Any clear topcoat will do the trick, you can test a small area to see how much the topcoat will deepen your wood color
How did you get into all the grooves might I ask to strip the stain? I've tried sanding down furniture to bare wood using a hand sander but when you get into the detailed areas the sander completely strips away the details in the furniture. I have a really old piece with some ornate details that belonged to my mother-in-law and I would really like to strip it down to remove the stain and bleach and pickle it as you did here. Did you use a Dremel of some sort or would you suggest your Pottery Barn Paint finish instead? Which finish would you say was easier to accomplish? Great work, your pieces clearly show your talent and a keen eye for detail. Thank you for sharing your techniques.
I want to do this on an antique wash stand. I'm really hoping it gets rid of the yellow/orange tones in the old oak. The finish on this dresser is beautiful.
Oh it definitely will! I’ve done this a bunch of times now, I will add that I’ve learned to apply vinegar after the dresser is fully dry to neutralize the bleach so your wood stays strong ❤️

I would tone it down with a pecan stain , which worked pretty well. I still have access to those pieces and they are way too dark for me today. Thanks again for your advice!

Hi! I prefer to just sand the finish off, but I’ve seen several other people strip first, then sand, then bleach. Citristrip seems to be the gold standard for stripping. Hope that helps!
I’m no expert but to get this raw wood look you’ve got to get down to the natural wood. Strip, sand then bleach. It’s a pain but will be well worth it.

After using the mixture of half water and half bleach. You have to use his other technique of half water and half vinegar to neutralize the bleach. I have doubts in this step. Thanks!

Hello, thanks for sharing this tutorial. Did you seal the piece after using the Minwax? We are in the process of refinishing our dining room table which is made from Rimu (a New Zealand native timber) and we have sanded it back to the raw wood. My vision is to have the table looking as raw/natural as possible but Rimu has a yellow tone to it. What would you recommend to use to get less of a yellow look and a more white/light/natural/raw tone and then what do would you seal it with as it is a high use piece? Many thanks.
Gail Williams the white wash I use in the tutorial is from minwax, it’s a liming white wash stain and does provide some protection, bc I wanted the piece to look as raw as possible I didn’t chance it by putting a top coat on which would deepen the color and bring out yellow tones. High use pieces usually call for poly top coats in my book but it may change the color, so I would test it in an inconspicuous area to see first
Odd question.if you wanted to add a bit of a whitening effect without whote washing. . . Would u be able to mix the white paint into a clear waterbased coat?

Hey! I used to do it by hand but now I use a tan paint in the crevices now (before I sand usually) and nobody can tell I swear!!

If you use a water base varnish, it won’t change the colour, especially on white paint, only oil base varnishes leave a yellow tinge.

Odd question.if you wanted to add a bit of a whitening effect without whote washing. . . Would u be able to mix the white paint into a clear waterbased coat?
I did that before and it was streaky to me, maybe if you stir it a lot as you go? Would love to see if you try it and figure it out let me know!
