  • A teenager encounters a man who wants her attention.
MWAH is used with permission from Nina Buxton. Learn more at ninabuxton.com.
A young teenage girl is leaving her friend's house at night. As she gets on her bike to ride the short distance home, a car pulls up next to her, and one of the people inside makes a kissing noise at her when they're side-by-side at a stoplight.
Trying to move along and mind her own business, the young girl takes off on her bike. But for a few minutes, the car trails after her, and the girl begins to worry about what will happen next.
Writer-director Nina Buxton's economical but powerful drama takes a small but incendiary moment in one young woman's daily life and amplifies it with superlative craft and intelligence, illustrating how one seemingly small cat-call can assume ominous proportions.
The confident, sure-handed craftsmanship leans on the power of camera, editing and performance to create its thriller-like intensity. The dialogue is very sparse, but the storytelling breaks down each beat of the young girl's encounter and flight with deft precision.
With the lack of dialogue and musical score for much of the film's action, the sound design takes on added import, as do the images, which show just how alone the girl is and her growing fear as the car trails after her on the road. These pared-down elements draw the focus to the girl's subjective experience, each sound and movement causing her to question her safety and realize her vulnerability.
Young performer Bethany Whitmore gives a powerful, subtle performance that proves pivotal to the film's evocation of suspense and fear. The acting is really a series of realizations, as the girl moves from a position of youthful, almost innocent freedom to a feeling of being potentially hunted as prey. Each shift in the girl's consciousness forms the crux of the drama, and the care and precision that the camera and editing take to capture these beats in Whitmore's performance is key to its resonance. As the girl embarks on her escape, she may elude physical danger for now -- but her anxiety and sense of endangerment will likely linger.
The most powerful aspect of MWAH is in how it applies the craft and sensibility of the thriller genre to an ordinary, everyday moment, bringing us inside the small but intense fear evoked when our sense of safety is punctured in a seemingly small, supposedly harmless way.
"Micro-aggression" is a very current term in the public discourse, yet the gift of MWAH is to make these abstract concepts emotional, concrete and, sadly, highly relatable. Leveraging the power of cinematic storytelling to elongate and expand tiny moments into full journeys of emotion and intimacy, a seemingly small gesture can take on loaded significance, depending on your position in society and life, and a bike ride at night can assume the terror and fear of a chase in a horror film. It's only for a few minutes for the young girl -- but those minutes can seem like hours when it's possible that your safety, or very life, hangs in the balance.

But if you ever find yourself alone at night in similar circumstances (and you definitely SHOULD NOT. but sometimes it is unavoidable) DO what she did, but you can do so much more!!!. This is kind of unrealistic in that she appears to be in a fringe urban/suburban area and, unless it is like friggin 3am (keeping in mind, that some people up at that hour are up to no good as well), it is unlikely that there would not be a SINGLE other car passing by or a house alight with actual humans in it!!! Scream bloody murder at the top of your lungs while still evading. If you see anyone whomsoever, SCREAM FOR THEM "CALL 911. I AM BEING FOLLOWED BY A STRANGE MAN IN A CAR WHO HAS MADE LEWD GESTURES AT ME!!!!" You have to trust that 99% of people wish you no harm. Some may be somewhat apathetic and many will definitely not physically intervene, but someone WILL call 911. You are bound to find someone who will help you. Still, DON"T GO IN ANYONE'S car or house (sometimes they work as teams, with one other car pretending to be your "savior"). Carry pepper spray. If you are somehow grabbed, don't be afraid to kick him in the balls or gouge his eyes with your fingers or anything on you (house keys are great). If you get really desperate break a house window (that will get their attention) or even better, the window of a business (alarms will go off). Ask a man or woman to stand with you until help arrives if at all possible.
      x
You kind of have an advantage on a bike that a car does not, to be honest. No car can maneuver like a bike can, no car can go places a bike can. I grant it is scary, but if you keep your wits like this girl did, you should be able to lose him easily.

@@bread2951 Oh, thank you. I realize almost everything I wrote reads like common sense, but I have a tween daughter and like every father (parent) I have had this kind of discussion with her. You cannot take for granted that every kid, even otherwise highly intelligent and perceptive ones, will know what to do in such situations. "You mean, I can break a window? Will I not get in trouble?" Hell yes you can and no you won't if you are in a desperate situation. As you know, thousands of kids go missing every year, every where, every day. Child trafficking is a viable thing not to mention other horrors. Some property damage pales in comparison to the resources and manpower that will be and IS devoted to and spent in finding missing kids...and even if you were found liable for damage, what parent would not gladly pay for something like that to have their child home and safe or to have them back if that is all it would have required? "I can fight back?" Hell yes you can fight back, anyone that goes as far as grabbing you forcefully does not have good intentions. You must fight. You don't require a permission slip!!!! Also, predators in general, are looking for easy, docile quarry. Chances are they will move on if a child merely puts up a frantic struggle, resists being pulled or lifted, strikes out, etc because too often they will find a milder, meeker, frozen in terror, and therefore unintenionally acquiescent victim.

Fear can be very entertaining. I am obviously not defending the kind of behavior in this movie in any manner but the point is that just like pain or an imminent threat, certain things are simply _exciting_ in many different ways for some humans. There is not always a rational choice behind it either - it just happens, like what kind of ice-cream you might prefer can be a seemingly random choice.
I remember clearly how myself and a girl I was seeing at the time were fooling around in a park late at night. I don't know why but whenever someone passed our little hiding spot, the look on her face was a mixture of mild nervousness, fear and longing - I liked it a lot. Maybe it was doing something immoral, maybe it was me knowing that she was doing it against her better judgment (but still out of her own will) - people have written books on this topic (as on many others).
I was not afraid at all but seeing her like this made the whole experience very remarkable - which I think translates in some aspect to this short - in a horrible, much darker manner.
This here is of course a completely different thing but I hoped that this at least helped to answer you question regardless.
Have a wonderful day and a marry Christmas. Stay safe.

my tip for this is, if you have a phone (you most likely do at that age), put it up to your ear and pretend to be on the phone with a parent. Just say like, "Hey mom. I'll be home in a minute. What's for dinner?" Pause. "That sounds delicious. So you won't believe what happened today! (insert long story)." Insert pause, implying she's talking and sneak in a few "yeah totally!"s and "honestly!" Do this for however long you need to, and make up some small talk with your "mom". I hope this helps, I've had to do it.

Yeah, mention in your convo, where exactly you are right now. Potential predators might think again before they take action if they believe there will be a witness, even just to the audio, who knows the location of the crime. If you get the chance, also describe the predator, his car, read the license plate, etc. Even better: Call someone for real, so you have an actual witness.
