► Back in 2013, Pokemon had a huge graphical update, going from classic 2D sprites to high quality, high polygon 3D models. As great as the new Pokemon models looked, they presented an issue - they created lag in the games. Today, I'll be taking a look throughout the Pokemon series, and seeing for myself what the LAGGIEST Pokemon game is, and what the most lag possible in Pokemon can be!

ChaosN On a friend’s old 3DS XL, the game was literally running at less than 10fps in a double battle, simply because the weather was a thunderstorm. This was also not an online battle, rather one of the many battles you fight in the main story of Sun and Moon.
Triple battle + Online + Huge Pokémon = Lag
I actually never had lag in XY or ORAS with my thousands of hours combined
But SM was absolutely killing my 3ds
My 3DS heated down when I played Ultra Sun
My friend sent me an image of a guy saying that a lot of it comes from terrible optimization. There are different copies of NPCs for every area, and the game checks an encryption code about 100 times before every battle.

@@oni-linkle4880 In pokemon soulsilver & heartgold when you walk into the burned tower to find suicune, entie, and raikou. (hopefully i spelled those right) My first 5-10 steps in found a shiny weezing the only shiny I have every seen and caught in all my games up to ultra sun & moon.
You could probably lag it a tiny bit more by poisoning all the Hoops as well because of the occasional bubbles of poison that pop out.
And then sword and shield comes along with 0 fps on ladders

As well as looking into translation errors. That one is riddled with them.
There are several videos debunking it, the translation was kinda wrong. Plus, in comparison, the old sprites and the "new" sprites look the same shape wise.
Just try a rotation battle (all six pokemon are exposed for both sides) with hoopas or something like that. Your 3DS will *beg* for it's life in binary.

Yah, basically they just didn't want to pay for new designs for sequels so they got models that needed 3 generations to be properly optimized for the hardware...
@@mitchtherighteous tbh I think it's actually kind of clever. More time to make a better story and better designs for the graphics (which some are clearly unfinished as shown by the trees in the trailer)
If they didn't do this, sword and shield would be even more unfinished.

Sun and Moon was pretty good, it's kind of unfair to compare any of them to Black and White considering that game was on a level of its own.

@@thejoker8665 When you connect you notice the game slows down (if you're in the Wild Area when doing so), and I think it's because all of a sudden the game has to render a bunch of entities (i.e. player characters)

No, that's not how it works. First off, this works with Yellow too, just with another tactics. Second, the reason the game lags is because MissingNO.'s sprite is so big it overflows the sprite buffers and goes right into the HoF data. In other words, MissingNO. is so fat, it breaks the game.
Those Glitchmon from Gen1 were huge, & prior to Gen 8 held the record for biggest Pokemon in the series. We shouldn't forget that Missingno overflows the data for the item in your 6th slot as well.

That's Missingno's encounter flag (to be specific, when the game tries to mark Missingno as having been encountered, it does so by setting the most-significant bit of the byte representing the quantity of your 6th item to 1, which raises the quantity by 128 if it isn't already greater than or equal to 128)
enabling 3D usually kills the FPS during battles which is why it has been removed in the later games

Sword and shield has lag in the wild area when undocked, connected to the internet, and lots of other players/pokemon on the screen.
That's latency lag not frame rate performance issues

Yeah, I didn’t notice it elsewhere in the game too much, so I’m guessing it might be the fact that it is trying to render the trees, a breeze, the light coming through and moving, and all the pokemon on the field, all at the same time.

KOing a max hp Blissey or Chancey in the older games simulates lag perfectly
Just Gen IV though. In older gens or Gen V it doesn't take long for the bar to go to zero.
Should've tried totem Pokémon in SM, I've found they lag even when not purposely attempting to crash the game. Maybe there's a way to force them into being hoopas too idk

@@marksaile6419 Or it is probably because Tajiri left, one of the last competent developers. He was executive producer, so naturally it made some cuts into the development. Same with the series taking its first downfall when Iwata passed away after BW2.

That's ping lag more than FPS lag. This is because 2 DSs have to constantly share information to eachother to have every part of the underground constantly updated.

Another couple things to try in S/M:
- Hack one of the Hoopas to have the Totem Aura (or if Hacks don't work, just Hoopa vs. a Totem (plus its reinforcements)
- Battle Royale Hoopa (since 4 trainers + the Hoopa)
If the lag was realistic: *Wailord appears* *screen fails to capture movement for several seconds then speeds everything up all at once*
I kind of want to see him do this in Scarlet and Violet, who may actually be the laggiest Pokemon games with no modifications.

Flame Animations are really bad for the game. Try 6 Moltres. It´s reaally bad ( have to edit: Moltres in Oras / Sun & Moon not in Lets go)

Because Dynamax uses seperate models of the same pokemon which are basically copy pasted with some red aura and three clouds. Thus they are out of space.

It's because of how the 3DS does 3D. It uses a technique called paralex screen. Where the screen creates a slightly different secondary image behind the primary one. However the price of that is that every pixel that is being used for the secondary image is not being used for the primary one. Therefore it's essentially cutting the resolution of the screen in half. However since every single pixel on the screen is being used rather or not the 3D is on it doesn't really require much more power.
You can notice this effect as there is a huge difference between having the 3D very low and completely off. When you go to completely off you can see the resolution of the screen jump upwards.

Triple Battle Moltres (or was it Rapidash? I can't remember which one) is the biggest lag in ORAS that I personally experiences myself; then it got worse when I let my Mega Aggron use Sandstorm in 3D I had to forfeit because it started to hurt my eyes.
Edit: I'm going to try it again in X/Y with a Moltres and Rapidash to see the difference.
Another edit: I don't think I had to forfeit..in all honesty I could have probably just used voice chat to tell the uber user that this was a bad idea.

Me: God damn, I was right, and god damn, that's the one I've been playing (I'm an amateur at Pokemon, I just started getting in to Pokemon, so, yeah)
I honestly think thw original pokemon ruby-emerald is one the best the series had to offer. Id say top 3. My favorite is white 2 with platinum coming in second.
I cant say anything about Omega ruby/sapphire tho since I never finished it.

In Mario and Luigi Dream Team, when you defeat the boss where you fight 3 enemies at once my 3DS crashed and I had to make a new save file
For the Generation 7 Games you should have used 4 Alolan Exeguttors instead of 4 Hoopa Unbounds.

Fun facts: never noticed frame drops on Y or alpha sapphire. But I feel like Sun is too much for the normal 3ds hardware, as I feel it laggy on the core game itself, outside of battles walking on the overworld.

The quality isn't that bad, and the game is still in development.
ballislifemL3 1 compared to the other pokemon games on the 3ds it should look better than them especially because it’s on a home console and not a portable one. Also this game has been in development for a long time, so you would think the quality or even the animations would look good. Also this was the playable game at e3. You would think they would pick the best one with the highest quality but just looks like an n64 virtual console game ported to the switch.
This might mean we are getting virtual console on the switch

lmao, sword and shield looks fucking fantastic. its not as choppy as the 3ds era. you’re probably the type of person to complain about a company changing packaging of a candy and say it tastes shit because of it.
Before video: I'm guessing Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal. Some battle animations make those games chug a little, which I can tell by listening.
After video: Wow, Tetris Attack (even with enough animation to induce flickering) runs faster than ORAS.
Apparently, I was only partially right.
It takes extra long to load MISSINGNO. because it's an invalid sprite size. Aside from that, Red/Blue don't really chug.
Gold/Silver/Crystal chug quite a bit though with moves such as Dragon Rage, Psychic, Surf, and Fire Blast.
I recently looked at Pokemon Gold in DMG and whenever the berry animation's triggered, the lag gets Sonic 1 Genesis levels of bad. Every other iteration of the Game Boy is free of berry lag.

I would sometimes get lag on a original Nintendo DS when playing Black and White.
That didn’t age well considering scarlet and violet has way more lag than the rest.

The laggiest I got my Y game was when I was using Reshiram against a horde of Floatzel. Glad to see you went the extra mile. Also, question: How did you get an fps counter at the top corner.
I never noticed lag in gen 6, but in gen 7 it seemed like in battle royals it lagged really bad when the AI were choosing moves
Sword and shield when you turn internet on in the Wild Area
I have been replaying Ultramoon while shiny hunting and it seems that having a shiny in battle against a totem pokemon really bogs down the game, it's been a while since I first played it though, but I don't remember the game taking an extra 5-7 seconds to execute the selected action or attack in my prior playthrough.
When you're shiny hunting with a max lure in specific areas of viridian forest in let's go is really laggy
And Scarlet and Violet exist now.
Love the games, but the game is laggy.
