  • Jurassic World: Dominion is a 2022 film directed by Colin Trevorrow starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of this one. Wish there were more dinosaurs and wish it was edited better alongside several other things.

    While I enjoyed the movie, about halfway through the film my wife turned to me and asked if Michael Crichton would ever write a story like this. The imagery was so ridiculous that it made me laugh and I replied, ‘If Crichton were to write this script, most of these characters would end up dead.’

      Since JPIII, the makers have been too scared to kill off important characters. The only ones who died in JPIII died too early to become important and after that the main casts have either been too small to lose members or they have consisted almost entirely of old beloved characters who have upgraded plot armour because of their status.

      @@thewhitemonkey64 Well, the original two movies weren't written by Crichton, I believe. He did write some scripts, but they didn't go with them and wrote a different script instead. Those two movies are VERY different from the books.

    I think my biggest gripe with this movie was, they set up the whole scenario of dinosaurs being on the mainland in the last movie, just to have the entire second half of this movie to take place on essentially another island (in the mountains vs the ocean). We really only got one scene with dinosaurs reeking havoc within a populated area. Besides that, yes the locusts play along the line of a different company playing with the genetics technology and using it in different ways, I kinda just wish it was a little more creative than "big bugs", but that's just my preference and it still accomplished the storyline they were going with. I hope we get a director's version with more of the scenes they clearly cut.

      @mauricioeinhorn5682 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Perfect observations @HawkEye93 One of the complaints about the whole franchise was the fact they keep going back to those dangerous islands. Trevorrow tried to "solve" it by exploding Nublar...But what about Sorna and the other three "muertes"?! It's difficult to believe that they set up the whole dinos out of the island thing and ended with the Biosyn sanctuary (which is basicaly the same thing with rocks and snow as you wisely said). A globe trotting adventure would be a lot better. It could end in a contained space (something like the Lockwood manor) because I think these movies benefit from a labyrinthine set like the visitor's center/kitchen/control room from the first one.

      The film does a very good job at explaining that humans and dinosaurs cannot coexist.
      Byosin Valley stood for dinosaurs in the world.
      We saw the beginning montage how dinosaurs are wrecking havoc all over the world. We saw in the film how humans are exploiting them as well.
      The end of the film montage shows nature actually finiding a way in integrating the dinos but not the humans.
      There is hope however, the little girl playing at the end of the film with the Moros Intrepidus.
      This scene echoes as well Malcolm's speech to the young generation at Byosin Valley.

    This movie was weird. The issue I had with it was that they didn’t really have a villain, or obstacle in this movie so it just felt like watching bunch of random events happen rather than a coherent story.
    Dodgson wasn’t really a villain? I mean sure he did some scummy business practices but he wasn’t much of an obstacle. The giganotosaurus didn’t feel like a villain either since he appeared so late.
    In JP3 or Jurassic world, Spino and Indo were very clearly the obstacle and when those dinosaurs were defeated, you knew the movie was over. But for this film the ending was so unsatisfying because it didn’t really feel like they overcame anything if that makes any sense.
    This movie would have been so much better if they focused more on the giga and the challenges the survivors face trying to escape the park. The locust and maisie subplots felt to me as a total distraction and did absolutely nothing to the movie.

  • @jumpanama
    @jumpanama 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Dominion felt more like the universal studios theme park ride than an actual JP movie.
    Every dinosaur attack scene was with a different dinosaur that you never see again, nobody dies so there's no actual threat, and the big finale is just running to a helicopter to escape. It's also got all your favorite characters but don't worry, none of them die or get seriously injured because the ride has to maintain continuity with current and future films. Only characters introduced to a specific diorama are killed in that diorama, so that each set piece could be treated as its own 5 minute JP short.
    I don't know how to fix it though, since imo the issue is the lack of continuity from scene to scene. You could cut an entire scene and not miss anything important.
    That said, I thought the Malta scene was awesome. Everything that makes JW fun and different from JP can be seen there. You get sweet action scenes, cameos of fan favorite dinos, and actual deaths of named characters.

    I actually feel bad for the Giga. The fact it was pitted against Rexy was the only reason to root against it. It was just chilling and being an animal and yet it gets tag teamed and brutally killed. The prologue would at least justify why these 2 animals can't be friends so omitting that worked against the film for sure. Speaking of the plot, I honestly think if they had left out the Giga entirely, brought back the Spino, and let Rexy 1v1 it the fans would have gone nuts. Imagine Grant's face if Dodgson said Spinosaurus. Maybe even give off a faint Kirby satellite phone jingle echoing in his head. We didn't need a new species to be the big bad dino, especially when locusts were the true antagonist in the first place. Criticisms aside, I really did enjoy the film as a super fan just for the nostalgia and action scenes.

      @themotions5967 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      His opinion on this is very spot on, and generally it’s what I and what I feel like many others have been thinking but not able to out into good enough words.
      It’s one of those things where the movie is a longer film, but funnily enough could have been even better if it was yet longer and had less of the content cut and moved around to fit a cinema release.
      This is because the movie tackled one of the hardest types of narratives to pull off (imo) in a movie with a fully and equally split narrative.
      But don’t get me wrong the team here did a fantastic job of trying to wrap of the stories of both of the trilogies’ casts and their individual narratives.
      It almost feels like it could have been broken up into a single season of a tv show with the way it was edited because you can tell they Laid out the plot points for each narrative and then had to figure out a way to go back and fourth between them that would fit the time constraints they had.
      If you do video games The Last of us 2 had this exact problem but far worse as it tried a three way narrative
      That’s what kinda gives the movie the feeling that things aren’t properly laid out in order as far as scenes go.
      The movie was still very good in my opinion, especially if you can see the intended plot layout under the editing In that initial experience
      I also recommend watching the prolog while in line for tickets until they release a directors cut.

    Dominion is/ was promoted as the epic conclusion of the Jurassic era. Good movies are not about CGI spectacle but about strong story elements and meaning to inspire fans.
    Let's look at The Lost World, long driven scenes with purpose and integrity to support the plot, it's not all about Dinosaur spectacles, the fans want a cohesive story writing where protagonists lifes are at stake, there wasn't really something threatening about chased by dinosaurs and main characters survive everything despite the odds, Eddie was a likeable character and he got ripped apart, Robert Muldoon underestimated the Raptors as well.

    Finally saw it myself. For all its cool moments, it felt like they made a movie out of the rough draft of the script. Pacing was all over the place, the dinosaurs didn't behave like animals (and let too many people escape through their own clumsiness or stupidity), too many major events didn't really feel like they had the right consequences (like the fire sequence), and it took too long to get to the good stuff, and then they went through the good stuff too quickly. Definitely was worth seeing, but could have been so much better.

      I think what a lot of people are experiencing is something that I experienced watching Avengers: Age of Ultron. I was a huge Ant Man and Ultron fan going in, and I had all sorts of ideas for the film, but was ultimately disappointed with what I saw. Cause it wasn’t a strong stand-alone film but instead a film that was used to propel a lot of future Avengers storylines.
      When it comes to Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, I feel like both would’ve been better served as TV series that gave more time for different plot elements to develop. The messiness of Dominion specifically and another huge time jump between films forces painful exposition and plot elements are rushed. I liked a lot of the fan service stuff, but at times that reminded me of The Rise of Skywalker (a film I was not a fan of). At least JW Dominion got the fan service stuff mostly right.

      I think the lack of humility and respect for the real stars of this movie is the main issue. You can't just make a whole movie dedicated to unleashing dinosaurs on the mainland and market this one as THE EPIC CONCLUSION TO THE JURASSIC SAGA and have the movie be about clones and mutant bugs. This is all made worse by the marketing that made it seem like the movie would solely focus on dinosaurs and humans trying to coexist

    • @chewy99.
      @chewy99. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kuhanblock9380 You’re complaining about the movie being about clones? All the non-avian Dinos in all the movies are clones, that’s how they’re made. And of course it only makes sense for them to use the prehistoric insects as the real threat of extinction to humans, as if it was just dinosaurs, we could easily defend against them and they wouldn’t really be something that would cause or threaten to cause our extinction. The locusts were creepy and I thought they were good. Also the Jurassic movies have never really been about the dinosaurs as the “real stars”, it was always about the human characters and their reactions to the dinosaurs. In the original JP the dinosaurs were not on screen too long.

    Something I hate is that Malcolm, or really anyone, didn't so much as acknowledge that Maisie was a clone which I thought would be a given.
    I also hated that Wu didn't die or even so much as face any consequences whatsoever. When he said "I need to fix a terrible mistake", it wasn't about, y'know, everything he's ever done, it's about this _new_ problem he made, which brings me to another point about this film - I cannot identify a theme. I thought it would be about facing the consequences of your actions, but nothing in the last movie seems to have affected anyone. It would've worked so well with the Atrociraptors attacking Owen which is literally his research coming back to bite him, but nothing else in the film supports it.
    Also, Fallen Kingdom is rendered completely pointless now. Lockwood's quest for "redemption" doesn't make sense because he didn't clone Maisie. It's even worse because Charlotte didn't decide to have Maisie until 2006/07, long after Hammond had already died, so why did they break up?
    And finally, the movie ends literally the same way as FK: voiceover of dinosaurs in our world telling us that we'll need to adapt instead of showing us how we have.
    This movie was so close to being great, and I agreed with everything you said here.

    Finally, I'm so excited to hear your thoughts and opinion on Dominion! 😃
    Edit: Okay, so after REALLY thinking about the movie, and seeing all of the MASSIVE missed potential, this movie was a big let down. And that's something I should NEVER say with a Jurassic Park Film. Ever!
    Like one of the issues I had with the movie was with the whole Charlotte Lockwood Clone scene. They clearly retconned it because of how it was presented back in Fallen Kingdom. And it sucked, idk why they changed it.
    And the creatures like the Pyroraptor and Dimetrodon, they were in the movie for like a few minutes and then never to be seen again, which sucks I wanted to see the Pyroraptor more.
    Hell, like Iguanodon was just put in the background when ever it was on screen!
    There waa concept art of Alan and Owen going up against the Pyroraptor, AND IT LOOKS AWESOME!
    Why didn't they make that scene??? Why?!
    This movie just makes me want to scream at Colin " WHAT HAPPENED?! WHAT DID YOU DO?! "

    I finally got to watch the movie all the way through. I've followed along with all of Klayton's videos, and I grew up with the JP movies. To say these movies have shaped me as a person is an understatement, it is this franchise that led me to actually seek more knowledge about and understand more about dinosaurs as they actually were, and I'm still seriously considering going into paleontology.
    Now, the reason I need to write a comment here is because I need to give my genuine opinion on Dominion, where it's not going to be spoiled for anyone who hasn't watched it, since they likely won't bother to watch it if they haven't, or they already have, just based on the video Klayton has posted here.
    Upon first viewing, I didn't even watch through the whole movie. In fact, I made it through the first 15 minutes, was called away to do something, and didn't return to the movie for a month. I was so uninterested with that first 15 minutes that it genuinely soured my want to return to it. Finally, I did, and I honestly can't say it was great.
    After I finally sat through the entire two and a half hour film, I came out of it with one single thought: That was messy. And messy it was. The whole film was so haphazardly thrown together, if not for the incredible shots in some cases, I would have believed it was a low-budget knock-off film. But, it's not, and as a finale to the franchise that shaped my childhood, and possibly my future as well, this movie was far, far away from what I had hoped for.
    It's worth mentioning too, that I was genuinely so excited for this movie to come out. I went into it with such high hopes, knowing that this was the big finish, the last of the franchise, and the movie that Trevorrow had stated was "the film [he] always wanted to make." What I got instead was a movie that felt like nothing more than a nostalgic cash-grab, with so many plot holes and issues, that pandered to its' audience with the dinosaurs and the characters, and spent the entire film talking about over-sized crickets instead. When you really peel away all that was made specifically to hit nostalgia triggers in the audience, you have this: Adopted clone child is stolen from her parents because Wu wants to use her special clone powers to solve a bug infestation on an island that happens to have a couple dinosaurs. It's literally nothing more than that, and as the grand finale to the Jurassic Park movies, it's such a far reach from where we started. From the masterfully written Jurassic Park, a story so well-fleshed out, with absolutely no reason to pander to or even really care about the audience, it tells a story of several people who are trapped on an island, after an employee puts the power grid down in an effort to sabotage the company. But this island isn't a typical island, the island is crawling with deadly genetically-engineered prehistoric creatures brought back from 65 million years of extinction: dinosaurs. The movie is action-packed, but has the heart and soul of a movie that was built up from scratch and given to the world not as a nostalgic cash-grab, but as a story about human nature, and plays with the consequences of "playing God."
    Dominion is nothing. I can't believe I could ever say this, but I genuinely can't stand this movie. Yes, it's a let-down, but it goes so much further than that.
    To go back to the pandering, too, I want to mention a few things that really stuck out to me. For one, the first time we see Dr. Sattler again, after so many years, is met with... Well, I guess a couple camera angles? It struck me as a bit odd too that she was wearing the same outfit that we first met her in. But then, oh, then she stands up in her truck and pulls off her sunglasses, and I honestly had to sit back and laugh. Absolutely no subtlety in her reappearance. But, that was nowhere near as bad as Grant's return.
    Dr. Grant instead is followed around, to (quite literally) center stage, and as he turns around what should we get but the Jurassic Park theme song suddenly swell. But, as I watched, I realized very VERY quickly that we didn't even get the theme song itself, but a loop of the same single part over and over until it breaks off because another character pops in.
    And Ian Malcolm, our beloved chaotician, has gotten the worst treatment out of all of the main three. It was so unemmersive to me, because not only did Malcolm simply not feel like malcolm anymore, but throughout the movie he was treated as if he was just simply stupid. Malcolm was and always will be one of my personal favorites, but they did Malcolm dirty.
    All of the other characters are just as bland and uninteresting as they've been in the last two entries. Maisy is a british girl who is a clone. Blah. Claire is a business-person turned animal-rights activist stereotype. Blah. Owen is just some random guy who was in the navy and found himself training raptors in JW, but oh, they go absolutely ham on that aspect. Every time you see him he has one hand up, defensive position. It genuinely feels like the main three from the JW trilogy had any tiny amount of character they might have had in the previous two entries, simplified down to a singular aspect of their personality and cranked up to 100. I couldn't find anyone in the entire movie even remotely interesting, and the movie itself certainly didn't give me any time to find an interest for them either.
    And the dinosaurs frankly sucked. Everything felt so mixed up and smashed together, and the only thing the entire movie was going for was a dinosaur showcase, because now we have a feathered Pyroraptor, a Therizinosaurus, a Dimetrodon, an Atrociraptor, and a Dreadnoughtus. In fact, in Jurassic World Dominion ALONE, there are 30 dinosaurs featured. I genuinely remember thinking, "Man, I miss when there were only six dinosaurs." The movie jumped from dinosaur to dinosaur in away that ruined any story there may have been, and took me, as the viewer, out of the experience entirely.
    To conclude, I hate Dominion. This movie is easily the worst in the franchise, and I genuinely hope one day the franchise will pick itself back up and start producing something, literally anything, with a single grain of the intelligence, the heart, and the passion for a good story above all else, that the first movie had. As is, what a terrible finale to a franchise.
    Note, please forgive me for my rambling, I just got off of a closing shift at work, which has me overtired and physically hurting, but I did my best to put my thoughts down in a way that makes some sense.

    One of the biggest issues I had with this film on the whole was that they basically Nerfed Rexy extremely hard. They practically went all in on Jack Horner's theory about how T-rex was a scavenger, to the point that we don't really see the rex do any real form of hunting, and backs down to the Giga early on. This is presumably the SAME t-rex that fought the indominus rex 1v1 at first, and sure she needed help to ultimately win, but the bigger point was that she wouldn't normally back down from a fight, having the two be mostly evenly matched, perhaps slightly leaning in the Giga's favor at first might have played better into the climax where they have their real fight and Rexy comes back to win the fight with a tag team effort, much like she did with Blue in JW1. I honestly feel like several of these dinosaur scenes were undercut and had the tension cut down substantially. Each one of these films seems to have gotten less and less scary and thrilling than the first which is something I find problematic since the original books are far more graphic and gory, but these films are pandered more towards children now. The Netflix series I felt had more tension in it than Battle at Big Rock or Dominion did, which is really telling when even a kid's show feels like the stakes are higher, and that's with an all cast composed of Plot Armor! I Did have a lot I enjoyed about this movie, but my general thoughts as I walked away were that, it was "OK" it didn't really wow me that much, or surprise me in any deeper way, it didn't seem ground breaking or shocking, and the few new dinosaurs that were introduced seemed to be there for a flashing moment and then were gone the next. I did love the Therizenosaurus though :3 I guess my general thoughts there was that this felt very.... middle of the road safe path in the long run, and like a lot of it was meant to try and appease to the fans in ways that felt like they were trying to keep everyone happy and fix some potential "Past mistakes" See also the relationship between Ellie and Alan. I am generally happy with how it ended though, and IF this is the last movie in the franchise, it's not a strong note to go out on, but it could have been worse.

    I just saw Jurassic World 3 yesterday. In preparation, I rewatched the other 5 movies in the series throughout the week. JW3 is the worst Jurassic movie yet for 2 reasons.
    1 Despite having a massive cast of 11 main characters, Ian Malcolm is the only character that they did a good job with. He gets to be funny and well written. Owen seems robotic and uninterested in what’s going on around him (which is very disappointing as he’s my favorite character). Grant, Ellie, Claire, Maisie, and Blue don’t get to do anything and are just shoehorned in just for the sake of having them in the movie, which is a real shame considering Grant using the raptor larynx to communicate with Blue would have been cool. Having Owen and Blue team up against the bad guys would have been a lot of fun too, but instead Blue just waits in the woods. Dodgson is the lamest villain yet as he alternates between cringy nerd and loser having temper-tantrums. Henry Wu inexplicably isn’t a bad guy anymore so he doesn’t get his come up ons for all the bad things he’s done. The two new characters are lame clones of Owen & Malcolm making them redundant additions. This bogs the movie pacing down really bad.
    2 Never before have the dinosaurs been so boring or irrelevant in this franchise. They’re never allowed to kill “good guys” so the tension is gone and you find yourself waiting for the dinosaur to leave so that the story can continue. Bizarrely, dinosaurs don’t play much into the story; the movie is about if they can stop the giant locusts from killing everyone through famine. I kind of like that idea, but the locusts don’t do anything and apparently can’t hurt any humans directly either. I was disappointed that the Spinosaurus didn’t come back. The dinosaurs that do show up come without build up and then just disappear forever.

    I liked it overall, but I did come out of it with mixed feelings. Particularly with the way that they handled the Rex and the Giga.
    Looking at the big picture I do think they made some good choices here: Explicitly place Giga as the biggest carnivore ever, including Spino. Have it bully Rex up until the end, then have Rex get mad and smash it ala the Hulk. Also I think it's actually good that they went back to depicting it as an actual animal like in the first two movies and not as a mustache-twirling villain like the Indos and the Spino.
    But why did Theri need to be at the final fight to take some of the credit for Giga's defeat? After 20+ years of disrespect this was basically their last chance to let Rex actually win 1v1 against another super heavyweight and they didn't take it. Also, if they are going to depict Giga as an actual animal then why were we led to believe that it would have a Joker-like personality? I feel like Giga's depiction would have been received better if we were just given accurate expectations.
    Regardless though, I did like the movie.

      That’s the thing, even when the T.rex didn’t exactly kill the Indominus in the 2015 movie the former still held it’s own admirably, literally ragdolling the Indo before the Mosa came. It showed that the T.rex could still be a force of nature and something to be reckoned with.
      Dominion botches that up by just repeating that fight again with none of the stakes and the T.rex is once again portrayed as kinda wimpy against an animal that realistically it should have been equally matched with. EQUALLY MATCHED! Why? The Giga may have it’s size but what it doesn’t have is a bite force of several tons, a weapon that the Tyrannosaurus is well known for. None of the JW movies have shown the T.rex use that biteforce effectively. Fact is, the battle didn’t need the Therizinosaurus that already had a perfectly fine sequence before. All that the tag-team did was nerf the T.rex as something that we should able to take seriously as ”the king of the dinosaurs” especially since Dominion too lampshades it’s status as the poster child of the franchise.
      Seriously, WTF happened with the planning of this movie? I smell executive meddling.

    I gave the film a D-. It's something I'm so passionate about that I'm planning to write an example of how it should have been written, because a lot of people seem so desperate for good content that they don't even know how poorly done this film was. There was a ton of subliminal messaging through the film, there was poor plot points, massive plot holes, and missed opportunities. D-

      This film took the Fast and Furious spin and made Mission Impossible parents trying to 007 save a kid… with farmageddon Biosyn edition. This film had no real direction. The bad guys all found demise, hero’s faced no real harm. First JP movie had people die at random without any true bias to main character survival. If Clair, Owen, so in had a death then it would be good.

    I think the movie was much too safe...
    You knew none of the characters were in any danger. You know they were going to make it out alright in the end.
    Personally I would've been fine with a main character or two being killed off in a believable way...like when the giga is sitting there just ree-ing at 7 people and Malcolm tosses the flaming locust on a stick into its mouth. What if he did that and distracted the giga for the others to escape, except that Malcolm gets grabbed trying to catch up.
    A worthy sacrifice so to speak.
    It's like they were scared to take risks with their characters.
    It was boring.

    I feel like the biggest problem with Dominion is that they tried to cram a mini series worth of plot into a single movie. Also poor Rexy just can't get a win in this series. The biggest thing she's taken down by herself is the Carno in Fallen Kingdom. It doesn't even need to be a crazy, over the top confrontation like Obi-wan vs Anakin or Goku vs Frieza, but that fight was super short and anti-climactic. Also very dark. Like I could kinda make out what was going on dark. Overall I enjoyed the movie but was let down by it.

      I really agree, especially after how the director was hyping the "underdog story". Apparently tho the fight was going to be different. Bits of it was there but changed such as the rex being "more intelligent" and playing dead. The Giga was going to get distracted by the flare gun but no other dino was coming in. Rexi was going to surprise attack and grab its neck snapping it, harking back to JP 3 and the fact that T-rex has the strongest bite force of any animal. I think even a character (Grant??) would mention it as they flew away, similar to how he keeps saying how big the Giga is all thought the movie.
      I think I read this last year on Reddit??? It's probably fake, but would have made the fighter better and more in line with Trevorrow's statements and prologue. I think the Giga was going to kill minor Biosyn employees but toy with them, showing the "Joker" side.

My big three complaints are the uneven pacing, the lack of human deaths, and some of the special effects don't hold up as well. I imagine a lot of this is probably because of Covid unfortunately. I really appreciate this channel.
    Each movie prior to this one kept your attention and each scene change made sense even the San Diego scene in Lost World.
    Dominion had a lot of “that’s it” moments.
    The characters reminded me of Buzz Lighter in toy story 4. Dum and not knowing what to do even though in their previous movies each one had a part in saving the day. (Not their fault).
    And the “boss” who was scheming since JP 1 wasn’t that much of a bad guy. I
    And why wasn’t anyone hurrying it’s like everyone was trying to keep their heart rate down.

    I think alot of my thoughts closely align with you Klayton on this movie. I too have a bad taste in the first act where it just seemed rushed, but my real gripe is the loss of opportunity with so many quick introductions of new species to only be quickly disregarded. I kept thinking after I saw this movie why the first Jurassic park was so profound to me besides the obvious first of its kind and shell shock of seeing legit dinosaurs! To me, the first did a great job of introducing dinosaurs in a way that you got a relative immersion into them and because the movie was not so saturated with action that you could digest the moments more. I am a big JP/JW guy like most of us here, but I just left the movie last weekend with the thought that I dont know if I have it in me to see it a second time even if it was for free or on tv. I think if this could have been slowed down in terms of time in with the new dinos and allow for more concerns of general logistics to come to life during that journey instead of a quick sprint, I could have probably latched onto this one more. I can appreciate the content and what this brings, but for a three hour movie I wish they had cut 1/3 of the new material and drawn out more of the guts of the film.

    Idk man, this movie really just wasn't what they sold it. This was meant to be so much grand and deep and from the trailers and teasers, it seemed to just made as an entire different movie, and what we got instead was just underwhelming and confusing. Too many plotlines, too little character development, really messed up 1st act and horribly passed second act. The list goes on. I'm glad to hear your thoughts as someone who I watched before the movie a lot. I feel people like me who were really following this movie before it came out are the ones that will be most disappointed.

    The 3 things that really killed the movie for me.
    1 Dodson: In the books Dodson was a total piece of crap and was one of those people you wanted to get eaten SO much, in this movie he was just another Elon Musk villain. I didn't feel any sort of emotion coming from him, if he treated his employees like crap we would want to see him dead, but in this movie we get a Dodson that is so bland and uninteresting. In the first movie Dodson had a sort of mystery but in the new movie he's just so plain.
    2 The Final Battle: The Final battle was absolute garbage, EVERY movie has an amazing climax but this movie has such a rushed cut short "final battle" that actually got me mad. It ends in the blink of an eye, it had such an amazinv buildup but they seriously wasted it. I swear to you guys it's less than 1 minute long.
    3 They don't fix the dinosaur problem like the trailer told us they would, the trailer lied to us SO much that it actually got me mad that I was watching a totally different movie than the one they told us we would get.
    Oh yeah and barely anyone dies and some of the more climactic ones are offscreen..... This isn't Camp Cretaceous where you can just tell us it happened. I want to see every grisly detail of the death scene.

    First off, after watching this movie, I wanted to see your thoughts haha. I feel your review was sincere to the franchise and genuine as a critic and a fan. I feel the Malta scenes were rushed, would of loved maybe a min more worth of explanation of the black market. But it was really rushed where the carnos were loose eating people. The Biosyn controlling plants, to me was a nob to the whole 80s Monsanto patenting life with crop seeds. While overall I enjoyed the movie, I was not a fan of the Giga scene around the jeep, to me, it played on the Rex scene from the original and stole a possible "uniqueness" from the Giga, bc it was a similar scene to the rex. Been watching you for years sir, appreciate all your work and efforts!

    Jurassic World Dominion had good effects, some interesting new dinos, and the new characters were actually pretty interesting.
    However, the movie had several issues in my opinion. Dodgson had some interesting quirks, but ultimately failed at coming across as a compelling villain. The multiple Rexes at the end confused the hell out of me because, like you said, the movie purposely says the Gigga and the JP Rex were the only apex predators. The locusts I felt were a little too overused for a Jurassic movie; if it were a show like Primeval it would’ve came across more smoothly. The Biosyn seed and the locusts was good take from some ideas in the first book, I just felt they were a little overused.
    Some of the biggest issues however, in my opinion, was Blue and the baby raptor and Maisie Lockwood and her mother. So Blue can reproduce without a mate…and supposedly so can her baby…did we not just go through 3 movies (the OG trilogy) where the raptors were some of the most dangerous predators to walk the Earth? But no let’s just give Blue her baby back and life goes on; not saying they need to die, just saying they need to be relocated away from civilization.
    I agree with you on the Maisie Lockwood and her mother, the plot was way too convoluted. Then there’s the whole Dr. Wu needing Maisie to essentially kill off the locusts…what’s to stop Wu from doing the same to the dinos? Or perhaps that’s just me being ignorant.

    I loved the nostalgia I felt when watching this movie. Seeing the old cast back together again & hearing the dilophosaurus calls gave me such happy feels. I just don't like how rushed this movie felt. It was hard to really stop & appreciate the dinosaurs because the scenes were just go, go, go. There was a lot of action going on. I was hoping to see more of the Carnotaurus. Some of the dinosaurs were like blink & you'd miss them. But overall, I did like this one. I thought it was better than the second Jurassic World.

    Klayton- THANK YOU for your real and honest opinion on this film. While there was so much in this movie while watching it that made me scratch my head or go “come on, way too cheesy” or “wait, but what about ___??” I still let myself get lost in it and enjoy the nostalgia and moments of the two generations coming together/interacting which is what I was most looking forward to anyways (I STILL wish Alan and Owen had more back and forth dialogue!). And I went home afterwards mostly satisfied but still couldn’t get over the cheesiness and anti-climactic-ness of so many things (especially Dodgson, the worst JP bad guy ever). But I went home and told everyone they should definitely go see it and rejoiced the closure it brought my 5 year old self when the first film came out.
    And then I woke up the next morning. I reflected of it and suddenly all the remaining things about the movie that I tried to ignore so as to fully embrace the moment and everything I just mentioned is all I could think about. I still want to see it a second time while it’s still in theatres, and I never wanted to be the guy bashing the new JP/JW film but there really was so much… disappointment and that was, well, disappointing haha. But the best few weeks have been filled with the movie being glorified and all those “but”’s being completely ignored and naysayers bashed for being haters. But you’re THE most respected and knowledgeable commentator on ALL things JP/JW in my humble opinion and it was a relief to hear that my doubts and disappointment weren’t imaginary. I am looking forward to the director’s cut of the film when it’s released on DVD and I do hope and pray for more JP/JW films which can help clarify or bandage some of the stuff that could’ve been better from Dominion.
    Thank you being all of us JP fans’ Alan Grant on the subject matter, and appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into your channel over the years, and thank you from me personally for bringing me a little peace with your review of this film 🙏🏻

    I'm happy to hear I'm not the oddball out here. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate all the hard work on this film. From initial concept to final cut and distribution. 1000% thank you team for putting another one out. With that said I cannot help but wonder two things. Is this another Lost World in terms of the script and how it was thrown together? Also what is left on the cutting room floor. There is a lot that just comes to an abrupt end. It feels like several scenes there was a lot more that was just missing. I am going to see it again this weekend because maybe I missed something. I had a three year old next to me giving additional sound effects to me every time a dinosaur was on screen. Might have been a distraction but I wouldnt change it. I am looking forward to it coming out to download. I have a skill set that makes me curious about your cut and for personal viewing just maybe. To end this long winded comment I'd like to address my biggest grump. My love for JP started with the first one as a kid. I saw it in theaters and I've never missed opening night since. To go from look at all these dinosaurs to look at all these grasshoppers. You've got to be kidding me. Maybe they were addressed in the teaser. Our theaters didnt show it with fast 9. We've trained dinosaurs to be weapons. We've released the dinosaurs in to the world. Leave it to the imagination of what that could mean in the next move and we get grasshoppers. On the upside we've made it easier to make fan films. On the down side we have a dinosaur movie about grasshoppers.

    Thanks for your honest review and I agree that Dominion has great scene but less than ideal editing. I disagree however about deleting Claire’s scene at the beginning of the film.
    It sets up the extent of illegal breeding and trafficking that puts in our backyard (instead of seedy underworld) and it sets up Franklin to be willing to work within the system. It also reflects Claire’s guilt which echoes back to her inability to discipline Maisie.
    And I do want to point out what inept CIA agents they have to bust the trafficking ring. Again, great atmosphere and action…poor set up to get there.
    Of course this is all fantasy with real world inspiration so everyone take a deep breath, look around and make better choices for our future - with or without dinosaurs!

    I agree with you 100%. As a person, who has been waiting for Jurassic to regain its glory since 09’, I was genuinely happy with both JW and JWFK. JWD felt cheap, blue looked like they took assets from the evolution game and shoved her in. The CGI was very spotty in the first act. The dinosaurs didn’t have heft to them sometimes, nitpicks I know but Colin Trevorrow is one of the best sci-fi directors in the scene rn and I guess I expected more. The dialogue was terrible, the Starbucks scene was horrendous, Alan and Ellie getting back together felt forced and unearned. There was no growth between them. It felt like a bad marvel movie in all honesty. The second half of the movie was good but I don’t know, I just left the cinema sad 😞. I know how much work the crew must have put in, and it pains me to say that this movie is probably the worst of the three. There’s so much more that I could and I truly wish I could offer some genuine help. It feels like studios haven’t learnt that their interference is what ruins most movies.

    I'm so glad I listened to your video - I had very mixed feelings about this movie and after leaving the theater I thought I'd be alone in this. But you bring up a lot of points I felt myself - and you did it respectfully and logically (as always), and that made it somehow comforting.
    Starting off with the not-so-good stuff:
    I feel like I liked a lot of moments in this movie, but it didn't quite work for me as a whole - it's a very weird feeling, I struggled to describe it to other people. I think that editing could have been a big problem - there were definitely situations where I was either anticipating something and it really felt like it's not going anywhere substantial for too long; or some parts were happening so fast, that I didn't have enough time to process and feel those things.
    I think I can best describe it as the filmmakers wanted to put so many things in to satisfy everyone, that they ended up not having enough screentime to develop all those themes. I don't think any of the themes were necessarily bad, but there were just so many, that the dinosaurs felt like just one problem among many and the spotlight was sort of stolen from them. In tune with the movie's title, the dinosaurs should have been the DOMINANT problem the protagonists had to face. Maisie's kidnapping, the locusts and overall idea of ill-willed or irresponsible use of genetic power aren't bad themes by themselves (and indeed they are very Michael Crichton), but I think there was just not enough time to develop each of them and make them feel like an important, relevant issue.
    Same with the villains, I only considered Dodgson and Biosyn a significant threat because I remembered them from the BOOKS. As a books fan I was SUPER happy to see his character return and be significant, but I know most moviegoers wouldn't remember him enough and with the other villains running around, they may not have caught on to how much of a threat he or Biosyn really were - again, there wasn't enough time to develop them all.
    There are certain scenes that are... I suppose I could say redundant. They're not bad per se, but they take away from the time of the movie and as a result other parts of it aren't explored as deeply as they could be. I think some could have been omitted, relying on the fact that moviegoers will understand something is a certain way by proxy, through some other scenes.
    There's one scene that kind of haunts me the most - when Ellie and Alan I think arrive at Biosyn HQ and they get to see a baby ceratops. It haunts me because I KNOW the intention behind that scene was to recall the memory of the scene from original JP when they meet the sick triceratops, but... it's far too short to work. I literally saw the same sort of shine and joy in Laura Dern's eyes like in the original movie, the same tone of voice, same gestures and expressions; but the scene was just too short for me to feel it. I RECOGNIZED it, but I couldn't FEEL it. Jurassic Park and World in part are all about FEELING the majesty and wonder of these animals - but I feel like in this movie there weren't enough opportunities to feel that sense of wonder (be it amazement or terror).
    Now let's lift our spirits with some stuff I DID like!:
    There were so many dinosaurs, I loved that!! Also, feathers??? AWESOME!!! I nearly cheered at the theater when I saw the therizinosaurus, what a formidable beast it was! I loved how many species we got to see and I think their designs were fantastic. My favourites were definitely Therizinosaurus, Pyroraptor, Quetzalcoatlus and little Beta!
    The original cast was back and they got a very nice amount of screentime! I liked how involved they were in the plot and I enjoyed those little bits where they got to interact with the JW cast and of course between each other. There was something incredibly endearing in Ellie's and Ian's friendship and absolutely awesome about Ian and Alan's cooperation - bits like that made me feel like I'm really watching a continuation of their relations from the original movie.
    Dr. Wu's final development was incredible, I loved how everything in his image both acting and appearance wise underlined how the man collapsed into himself out of guild for what his ambition drove him into. Wu's character development through all Jurassic movies was one of my favourite things and this conclusion was pretty incredible!
    Justice being served to Dodgson in the same way as it was to Nedry was poetic and extremely satisfying, I think it was the most "fuck yeah!" moment in the entire movie for me. Like I mentioned before, I was SUPER happy that they brought Dodgson and Biosyn back as the main villains for this movie, considering how important they were in the books, I was very happy to see them explored in a movie.
    Finally, Ian's 'battle' against Dodgson was absolutely fantastic - it was such an Ian thing to do and that final confrontation was so incredibly satisfying to see!! I've always liked Malcolm a lot from the previous movies, but now he might straight up be my favourite character!!
    All in all, there were many moments and concepts that I really enjoyed about this movie, just as much as there were certain problems that didn't make it as much of a bomb for me, as some of the previous movies did. I am still certainly going to see it a second time in theaters and I'm VERY much hoping for and looking forward to an extended cut. I probably won't reach for Dominion to rewatch as often as the original JP, TLW or Fallen Kingdom (my favourites), but I definitely will be reaching for it many times.

    I’ve really enjoyed this channel and the content within. Like the majority I found this movie so-so in plot but I overall enjoyed it. Having said that I agree that this movie can be better with some new cuts. In fact, the opening and closing cuts you mentioned would’ve been perfect and they definitely would’ve given this movie and even better pace. Still. I loved it. If I had one MAJOR critique it was during the chase scene in Malta. Owen drives through town square and we see a carnotaurus and allosaurus standing there while people are fleeing in ALL DIRECTIONS. Good scene. Except there’s some rando on a scooter just staring blankly around and gets easily eaten. How did this guy just scoot into the middle of a twin square in chaos and NOT notice two giant freakin lizards standing around. He’s LITERALLY standing between them! He didn’t just pop out of an alleyway or come up from a tunnel. To move into the middle of all that chaos he would’ve had to of caught on a lot sooner than before he became Dino chow. Honestly that was poorly executed moment. If they could cut that out in the directors cut or maybe there’s an alternate take where he’s getting chased on his scooter and THEN gets eaten, that would be great.
    Anyway, great channel loved your honest but respectful review. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on the final season of Camp Cretaceous.

  • @DrTechnoBabel
    @DrTechnoBabel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    Unpopular opinion time: I was actually relieved when I saw that they cut the Cretaceous prologue from the movie. As I commented on your review of that when it was first released, the Jurassic Park series has always been able to handwave away any inaccuracies with their dinos with the whole 'well they're genetically modified, so they aren't 100% accurate', but the prologue didn't have that excuse, so it risks dating the movie if other discoveries show up in the future that make something shown in that wrong (not to mention the inaccuracies already in it, like the Giga and T-Rex living in the same place to begin with). More than that though, it opens up a whole other can of worms with trying to make the conflict between the T-Rex and Giga personal by framing the whole thing as a rematch in some ancient rivalry between the two species, which unless they have genetic memory like Assassin's Creed carries no weight because the clones aren't actually those two dinos and have none of those memories, meaning no one in the actual movie even has an investment in that scene other than us the audience. And if the takeaway from the prologue is that it should matter because they *are* the same dinos as before, it completely undercuts Maisie's entire subplot of realizing that even as a clone she is not a copy of Charlotte, but her own individual. Personally, I think the whole 'there can be only one alpha' thing is a simpler and cleaner justification for the conflict between the Giga and Rex, and while the Giga could have been built up as a threat a bit more before the final fight, I don't think that prologue is the way to do it.
    That being said, while I do think this movie was better than Fallen Kingdom, I do agree with you that the editing of the first act was a mess, and other than the prologue I think your proposed series of events would be a better way to have ordered them. Oh, and I definitely would have preferred the T-Rex at the drive-thru to open the movie over the Mosasaurus scene: *that* part of the original prologue can stay.

      Techno Babel! Amen! Your commentary was perfect. I keep saying Trevorrow's mistake could be summarized like this: he chooses to make the humans caricatures/one dimensional and tries to give "humanized" personalities to the dinosaurs.
      Something I really miss from the original triogy (and in some of the best Spielberg movies like Jaws and E.T.) is the scientist guy as our anchor point. I believe that Sam Neill said it best in a Vanity Fair interview. He says "We're just nerds in very uncomfortable situations". I misss this. And Sam Neill knows what he is talking about. In another interview he says that he suggested to Spielberg that Alan should faint seeing the Brachiosaurus/ listening that Hammond had a T-rex. Rewatching the first one the other day I loved how he doesn't know what he is doing half of the time! He is scared when the T-Rex roars reacting to the flare/ he looks down when rescuing Tim from the tree/ he is so mesmerized by the Gallimimus behaviour that he doesn't perceive they are coming right at him and the kids/ he misses the shots at the raptor in the control room. Something I don't get from Owen Grady...because he is not a scientist. Fallen Kingdom tries to shove some research thing with his raptor training, videos, but it feels odd and doesn't fit the character. And then he is back as a Dino-whisper action man with his plot armor (Just think about the lava scene on Fallen Kingdom).
      I mean, although Alan has the "Indiana Jones vibe" with the hat and the rugged manner, he is a lot uncertain /vulnerable and honestly affraid in the first one (and honestly pissed on JP3), but he needs to try and survive his predicament.
      Dominion tried to toucht it with the Dimetrodon sequence... but kinda failed because of Trevorrow's lack of talent. It's a rushed sequence and you barely can understand what is going on. But the point is: Alan and Ellie are there trying to get out and save themlseves and save Maisie with almost zero resources (just a nod to the raptor snout kick). When Ian appears and doesn't know how to unlock the gates it really gives us that sense of terror and vulnerability. But all happens so very fast that you can't even process and feel it.

    • @DrTechnoBabel
      @DrTechnoBabel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mauricioeinhorn5682 I get what you're saying, and on some level I do agree that Trevarrow can cross into the territory of humanizing the dinos a bit too much, and lessening the mystique of the dinosaurs. But I do like the idea that by the time of the World trilogy, while the dinosaurs are still dangerous wild animals, humans (or some of them at least) have started to learn about them, and that knowledge makes the dinos less scary and gives people like Owen a way to interact positively with them. In the first Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs were still so new that no one, not even the staff of Jurassic Park, knew anything about them, and that lack of knowledge and rushing ahead with their plans in spite of that is what lead to the downfall of that park. By the time of the World trilogy though, dinosaurs have existed for for over 20 years, and people have learned enough about them that they are less mysterious monsters and more like any other wild animal, with the possible exception of the hyperintelligent velociraptors and the definite exception of the Indos.
      Ultimately, I think the entire issue comes down to a fundamental difference in the message behind the two trilogies. The original Park trilogy (and the books) was all about the folly of man's attempt to play God, create life, and control nature, with the dinosaurs being the ultimate manifestation of that hubris. While they are still amazing, wonderous creatures at times, ultimately the dinosaurs are creatures that do not belong in our world. As Hammond says at the end of the second movie, their existence requires our absence not our presence, and within the first book it was considered a *good* thing that the original island was firebombed as it fixed the mistake of bringing them into existence in the first place, and some of them making it to the mainland anyway is an impending ecological disaster.
      In the World trilogy however, the overarching message is that man needs to learn to coexist with nature and protect it rather than dominate and exploit it, with the dinosaurs now being a stand-in for endangered species. Cloning and creating more of them is only seen as bad when it is done to create biological weapons such as the Indos or the locusts, and otherwise the dinosaurs are generally seen as a good thing. In Fallen Kingdom, Malcolm is the only heroic character to question whether the dinosaurs should be saved in the first place, with all the other protagonists agreeing pretty quickly that yes, it is their responsibility to ensure the dinos' survival even if it meant putting their own lives at risk. And when the dinosaurs actually do get loose in the wider world, humans are the only ones that really suffer from their presence. From what we're shown, the dinosaurs for the most part coexist pretty well with modern animals, and the whole sanctuary seems to be more to protect them from us than to keep them separate from the natural world.
      In short, the series went from portraying the dinosaurs as fascinating but ultimate unnatural monsters, to another species of animal that deserves our respect and protection like every other one. Whether you consider that shift in their portrayal a good or bad thing is up to personal opinion, but it does give the newer movies a different feel from the older ones.

    • @mauricioeinhorn5682
      @mauricioeinhorn5682 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DrTechnoBabel you're totally correct. I understand that shift and I do like that by the time Jurassic World was fully functional there were people studying the animals. The shift you mentioned that is brought by Fallen Kingdom and should be amplified in the third installment is a really missed opportunity. My issue with the second trilogy is less with the message about the dinosaur protection and more with the human characters. Owen always reminded me of those action figures from Jurassic Park-rip off toy lines rather than a actual Jurassic Park character. I know that Owen is liked by the kids and became a popular meme with the hand thing (Jesus... the hand thing...), but the portrayal is just too bland. As for Claire's arc from bossy park manager to enviromemtalist/mom, Malcolm's line from TLW ( "You went from capitalist to naturalist in just 4 years.") comes to my mind everytime I think of her. Someone said in the comments that a little banter between the two groups would bring something refreshing. Think about the lunch scene from the first one where the points are made by the original cast v. Hammond. Klayton himself metioned the desire to see Malcolm's reaction to Owen and Claire (especially Claire) and their perspective about the animals. But Owen and Claire's perception was never made clear.
      Apart from their banter in the first World movie about meddling with nature to get a "Wow factor" much of the message was left to the fake sites and blogs used to promote Fallen Kingdom and the shift was set with characters having very little to be explored and not working as the driving forces to carry the message. Another thing that doesn't help is the fact that - despite being so poorly written - Owen and Claire were overused. They are the leads in all of the three World movies and imo it's asking too much from those characters with so little being given to them.

    • @DrTechnoBabel
      @DrTechnoBabel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mauricioeinhorn5682 Yeah, I agree. The point I was trying to make (though I realize looking back that I forgot to actually make it clear) is that with the Jurassic World trilogy, the dinosaurs as a whole went from antagonists to protagonists, and as such there was more effort to humanize them, especially when it came to the velociraptors. And a consequence of this is that less effort was put into developing the human characters. I do like the idea of Owen, and I think how he and Claire were portrayed in the first Jurassic World worked, but other than Claire going from 'naturalist to capitalist' the two didn't develop all that much in the latter two movies.
      I think part of the reason for this is that the new movies seem almost afraid to cast the dinosaurs in a negative light when they aren't directly attacking people. There are no real moments like the lunch scene because they don't want to question whether the dinosaurs being alive is actually a good thing, they just operate on the assumption that it is. The closest they come is at the end of Fallen Kingdom where Claire comes to the decision not to save the dinosaurs, and even then it's portrayed as tragic and the wrong choice. When Maisie releases the dinosaurs with the justification that they deserve to live like she does, that's considered the end of the argument by the protagonists as a whole, and continues to be the default viewpoint for the heroes throughout Dominion. There's no real discussion about the implications of reintroducing an extinct class of animals to a modern ecosystem, because in the view of the World trilogy the dinosaurs are no different than any other animal, and deserve to live in peace and be protected by us.
      I think it would have been really interesting if there was a 'generational divide' on the dinosaur issue between the old protagonists and the new ones, but outside of a few small glimpses that doesn't really happen. Alan Grant in particular was pretty heavily against the idea that Ingen's creations were even dinosaurs in the first place back in JP3, but in Dominion other than how his first concern about the Sanctuary is whether they're sending people in to interact with the dinosaurs, there's not really any pushback from him about the idea as a whole. And that's not even getting into how blase Malcolm is about the whole thing. It could have been interesting if they and Ellie kept more in line with the original trilogy's view on the dinosaurs, and that caused friction between them and Owen and Claire when it comes to the idea of the dinosaurs. In particular, I was surprised when I saw the movie and Alan barely even questioned why Owen would risk his life to take a baby Velociraptor out with them even though someone trying to do almost that exact thing is what caused him so much trouble in JP3. That subplot could have given the movie a chance to have that 'lunch scene' moment, and give Owen, Claire, and Maisie a chance to debate the philosophy of the newer movies with the original characters, and give both groups a chance to develop as characters. The scene at the end of the movie where Alan sees the child feeding a dinosaur and jokingly saying 'I'll never get used to that' rather than immediately trying to get the two away from each other doesn't really feel earned like it should have been.
      In short, the reason for the human characters having lackluster development in the new movies in comparison to the older ones, at least in my opinion, is that the movies don't want there to be any real debate over whether the dinosaurs are good or bad for the world. They firmly have taken the stance that saving the dinosaurs is a good thing, so all the heroes need to think that too, and that gives them all far less room to develop. Character growth comes from that character's worldview being challenged, and through that challenge the character either changes their views or reinforces them. But Claire and Owen never really had their views on the dinosaurs challenged past the first Jurassic World movie, which stunted their growth throughout the series.
