Decade's back and I'm sure this is a fact for all of us Thunder Force fans here?! We'd all say that 3 & 4 were the best (I know I did!) of the series and on a technical standpoint they are?! Thunder Force 2 is the most innovative and unique still to this day 33 years later. Because of this and having played this Sharp X68000 version, it's now my favorite version out all the games, so ahead off it's time even in the era off shoot em ups of 1988. The reason why T.F. 5 & 6 didn't do great because they both feel tired and uninspiring, the franchise needs to go back to its overhead levels of T.F. 1 & 2 if it ever hopes to regain momentum again. Thunder Force 7 if it should become reality?! Needs it's overhead free roaming semi vertical level system back. Otherwise the series might as well hang up it's thrusters sigh.....
Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I need to install an X68 emulator again and try this one out, finally - it's been one of my favourite videos to watch for a while (music is fantastic). And yes, you're totally right... 3 & 4 come to mind as the best, especially IV (for me). But II has so much innovation and variety in it, it would not do injustice to discount this achievement.
I like the exclusive stages and tweaks of the x68000 version. too bad no one bother to reunite x68000 and md stages in one perfect thunderforce 2 version.
I am not Roy, I just upload the videos I collected over the years so everyone can see them! I made a few replays, too, but my alias is "AVE". I am based in Canada!
This game, although considered by some as the black sheep of the series, it is also the best in the series if you combine the creator's original idea with more effort and love to it. But since the 3rd entry, horizontal scrolling became the main focus to compete with Gradius, R-TYPE, RayXanber, Darius and other similar shooters.
I do love Thunder Force II, I love how primitive and rough around the edges it feels, but I totally understand why some may not like it or even consider it a badly-designed game, because they're not wrong. Even comparing just the horizontal levels in II versus anything in any of the later games, the later games knock it out of the park, especially IV. They're just much better designed and clearly had more thought and effort put into them. But even then, I do agree that this idea should've been improved upon. I think this could've been an awesome hybrid overhead/side-scroller series if all the levels were better designed. But at the same time, making it just a side-scrolling game meant it so that the later games had a bit more of a focus and that does show with how much better they're designed imo.
@@SixtyforceYTP I think Bangai-O for the Dreamcast did a good job of non-autoscrolling SHMUP. That game is viewed sideways but it could work just as easily in concept as an overhead 'exploratory SHMUP'. It's the closest thing I can think of though that expands on the idea.
Cardboard Sliver I think what the pilot meant was that simply he was rtbing or returning to base hence him saying I’ll be right back. It can’t be going to tf3 since the identities of the pilots in that game are revealed when you beat the game
Why is it that the thunder force series is over 20 years old & hasn't had a proper transfer to HD on all the new video game formats. I would pay full price for a Thunder Force Legends pack with Thunder Force I - VI with remixed music and possibly remixed graphics... Imagine getting to pick your ship & then getting to play through anyone of these classic games. The justice ray from #5 tearing through the levels of this game right here, etc, etc...
I posted it on a forum about the same time I posted this comment and I was told that it could be the enemy telling the player to surrender: "You're finished! End the war." And considering the player and mission control converse with each other at the start of the game sounds different to the one used here, because it sounds like it's been pitch-shifted down some, I think it's the enemy telling the player to surrender.
That would make sense, I tinkered with the speed and I can barely understand it when the voice says finished. But unclear voices and misheard dialogue can have charm and hilarity to it.
I am not the player, I just had this replay saved for over 13 years. I can't give a guarantee whether savestates were used, but I suspect that not based on looking at the gameplay.
For Sharp x68000 version: MCM(Top view), Atomic and Side Winder(Side view) For Sega Mega Drive/Genesis version: Clash(Top view), Side Blaster and Nova(Side view).
Now I know where the image that was in the Genesis instruction manual (but was not in the game) came from. This version does seem to be missing my favorite level music though. Interesting to see all the differences.

compared to thunder force 3, 2 was much more difficult as you lost all your weapons if you died. In 3 you only lost the weapon you were using.

It is the Sharp X68000 version, not the MD port.
Insane game on any version though... Simply can't survive that 13:00 underground stage !
I also want a Thunder Force VII & VIII by Sega & Technosoft... I can't be the only one who thinks of these things
I like how he kept on getting the extra resources even though he already HAD them.
I think you get a score boost, could be wrong though.
I see this video now, and wonder if there is a better version of Herzog Zwei out there as well.
There is a ridiculous amount of enemy bullets onscreen in this game when on hard mode.
Wow, this is even better than the already good MD version, with more layers of parallax, colours and also in higher resolution?
The X68000 was a more powerful system than MD, MD has some improvements over this tho.

This game had variety - something it's two sequels (while technically better) lacked .
