Dirk Nowitzki - Postup Powerhouse (Dirk Fade)

  • Dirk Nowitzki. Once SIXTH on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. 15th in NBA career playoff scoring. NBA champion. NBA Finals MVP. NBA MVP. 13x NBA All Star. 12x All-NBA teamer (4x First team, 5x Second team, 3x Third team). 50-40-90 club member. FIBA World Cup MVP. FIBA Eurobasket MVP. Arguably the greatest European player the league has ever seen. He is THE Dallas Maverick.
The Würzburg wunderkind is one of the best power forwards in NBA history. A 7 footer that can shoot 30 footers was always going to be a dangerous weapon, but he could power in the paint as well. He’s got all the post moves, and his career highlights show his incredible ability to score from just about anywhere on the court, but obviously he has one move that stands alone: some call it a one-legged stepback, but most have dubbed it “the Dirk Fade.” Nowitzki has said that he admired MJ’s signature fadeaway, and adding to it to his repertoire made him more dangerous. He literally gets a leg up on opponents by creating that slight bit of separation necessary to get that silky smooth shot off.
I was originally going to make a video exclusively about his fadeaway, but I figured why not make it a lesson in posting up? The beauty of his shot, the turnaround jumper, and the pump fakes are all effective moves for any player to learn, but they are most dangerous when paired with counter moves. The drop step, the rip through, finishing with both hands; those are all vital components of the German Giant’s bag of tricks. Sure, the fade is LETHAL, but I wanted to showcase what he does in order to set up those moves, or how he counters when those moves are taken away. This video is MOSTLY dirk fades, and turnaround fadeaway, but I sprinkled in a little of his other postup plays as well. Enjoy!

Dirk has really adjusted his game as he aged. He was playing small forward in the early 2000's and was slashing and dunking on people. He would grab a rebound and push the ball up to start a fastbreak himself. Then he was operating in the high and low post most of the time in his 30's. And in the last 2 seasons he's just being used as a spot up 3 point threat (still very effective).

In his era many doubted he could perform i the playoffs let alone win a ring. His style was thought to be too finesse and too soft too euro. They were generally not able to punk him out his way of playong and was able to play passable defense. He was also a great playoff rebounder and mainly defensive rebounds. His battles with the spurs duncan and rockets yao really toughen him up and he had such confidence in himself that he didnt need to be in the media boasting or hating on his teammates and he didnt need to pick fights with the toughest players to show he had it. He slaughtered some tough guys and defenders in kenton martin, Bruce bowen, lebron james, lamar odom, tim duncan, yao ming and many more in the playoffs.
